Assuming/hoping this is the case. My whole point is that I don't get why the run has been non existent. They were in control of the game and passing game was not exactly connecting. They continue to use Woodhead on first and 2nd downs to block and run, it wasn't what I was expecting to be honest. Mathews has flashed success, and they aren't exactly trusting him.He has 60% of the RB touches for the team. Not sure we could ask for all that much better. Arizona has a stout run defense.
At that pace, he'll have plenty of 20 touch games
Because the run has not been particularly effective. They've been effective enough to keep the defense honest, but no more.Assuming/hoping this is the case. My whole point is that I don't get why they aren't using the run more to control the game. The passing isn't exactly consistent. Arizona hadn't done anything on offense until the end of the 3rd. And if you had been watching, Woodhead is getting a ton of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd down snaps, which to me is a bit shocking considering his <1ypc.He has 60% of the RB touches for the team. Not sure we could ask for all that much better. Arizona has a stout run defense.

alotWell, let's put it this way. What's the difference between him and Le'veon Bell?so youre basically saying he should be going one round earlier than hes goingI'm not saying the guy is a 1st rounder...I get that some have 2nd degree burns because of the guy. But middle to late 4th round? Why don't those same trust issues apply to CJ Spiller who seems clearly rooted in an RBBC situation with FJax and is going a round earlier and is actually coming off a bad/subpar year? Toby Gerhart is a better bet than Mathews? Why? Because he hasn't burned anyone before...? Mathews is going just behind Frank Gore whose team just drafted Hyde because they watched Gore stumble badly in the later half of last season. Can't speak for anyone else, but I have trust issues with him. Can't shake the memories of him leaving games because of this or that. He missed ten games in three years before playing in all of them last season. And now Whisenhunt, who had him playing well, is gone.
Like I said, it seems like 2012 still seems to bother folks to the point where they've let a significant value slide which when it comes to ADP, I'm usually can understand the logic of the mob, even if I don't agree with it. Not on this one.![]()
Yeah, mainly the fact that Bell played Cleveland and Pittsburgh led the entire way this week and Matthews played Arizona.alotWell, let's put it this way. Dude plays Arizona and Seattle first two weeks, two of the best run defenses in the league.
Dunno how anyone expected more than you got last night. Better days are coming.
Actually, the run/pass ratio last year was more indicative of McCoy's play calling than Whisenhunt. I saw that when reading about the Whiz coming to Tennessee as they were analyzing his historical ratios. That offense and its mad scientist is now in Tennessee.I don't get it. I really thought they'd use the offense that carried them into the playoffs last year. Figured it made too much sense not to.

They're talking about percentage of time on the field. Reminds me of the Washington game last year.Good. Glad they lost. It's on you, coach.![]()
Woodhead was not effective at all yesterday. I mean, I guess that you put him out there to try to find a mismatch in the slot or in the backfield by moving him around the field. But I felt they over utilized him and under utilized Green - did this guy even see a snap in the first half? The good news is that Mathews was in on the hurry up offense a few times. He was excluded from that last year. Also, he saw two targets to Woodhead's one. I really thought he'd see more targets after the way they ended last year and the third preseason game.
His usage was puzzling. The only line of thinking that would any sense whatsoever is that they are trying to keep him fresh. There is absolutely no justification for using Woodhead over Mathews since Mathews is a better blocker and a good receiver. Woodhead is a minus blocker and a minus runner. The guy is a speed demon but has absolutely no moves and can be arm tackled with ease.
Yup. I get that Mathews is not going to have a career day against these stout lines. I wasn't expecting SD to be a pass happy team this season. They weren't playing down by more than 3 at any point. And they controlled the game for the most part. So the lack of Ryan Mathews just didn't add up.Dude plays Arizona and Seattle first two weeks, two of the best run defenses in the league.

This is the most ridiculous part to me. How Woodhead ever gets a meaningful carry is just completely baffling to me. Especially when it's short yardage. Just bad....bad play calling. There is absolutely no justification for using Woodhead over Mathews since Mathews is a better blocker and a good receiver. Woodhead is a minus blocker and a minus runner. The guy is a speed demon but has absolutely no moves and can be arm tackled with ease.
This is the only thing I can come up with and it does make sense. But that thought process goes out the window when the team isn't winning games, so hopefully them losing was a wake up call to the coaching staff to lean at least a little more on their best RB.His usage was puzzling. The only line of thinking that would any sense whatsoever is that they are trying to keep him fresh.
He did get the carry on both of the 2 times they went with that 3rd and short formation. And of course, yes, popped the one for a TD. You know they're setting up a little fake and flip to Donald Brown next time though. This is the only thing I can come up with and it does make sense. Funniest part was when they were lining him up at FB, with Brown at tail. I like the creativity, but I better not see the guy lead blocking if the argument on the other side is limiting him to keep him healthy! Then he goes and scores a long(ish) TD from that formation to save the night for us.
The thing that concerns me the most is that when they were playing for their lives, their playmaker was not on the field. Instead Woodhead was in the game for their failed final drive. So they clearly weren't worried about keeping Mathews fresh at that point. They just prefer to have a little guy who can't block in their 2 minute drill.LawFitz said:This is the only thing I can come up with and it does make sense. Keeping him fresh is a season long concept. And Woodhead is the passing game RB. I don't doubt that, as Mathews was RB12 in standard leagues last year and was top 12 in all formats during the second half of the season. I was just saying that it is a little concerning that the only player who showed any life at all in that game was benched when they needed a play the most. Especially when he only had 12 carries. It's not like he needed a breather. When there are only 2 minutes left in the game and you are down 1, you should push in all your chips.Keeping him fresh is a season long concept. I suspect the bottom line for this coaching staff is keeping one of Mathews or Brown (preferably Mathews) fresh and playing into end of season. But that can only last as long as they are winning games. 0-2 is probably around the corner with Seattle next.
Woodhead will continue to be a reception thief and the primary passing down RB as long as he's healthy. He be in during most 2:00 drives, until they get to the goal line. But Mathews can still be a low-end RB1, even with Woodhead mixed in.
legWhat kind of injury are we talking?
I've been wondering the same. Honestly never put effort into caring about Brown, so I'm not sure if he steals those snaps or if he's just a true backup to Mathews. With woodhead gone fur the season, when Mathews returns to the lineup is it fair to say he will probably see an expanded role in the passing game? No one is talking about this but he might be an excellent buy low rt now. He could be one of the few workhorse RBS in the 2nd half of the season. Thoughts?
yep. And heshould only be out 3 more weeks. Nobody is talking about this. Its crazy. I don't know what your other RBS or WRs look like but is probably cut Jordan Mathews for him pretty quicklyif I needed Rb helpNREC34 said:He's on the waiver wire in one of my leagues. I'd have to cut a prospect like Davante Adams, Jordan Mathews or Bishop Sankey to take him right now. I picked up an injured Steven Jackson last year in that league. It was a bad move because he clogged up a roster spot for several weeks and then didn't do a lot when he came back. This could be different but it's hard to pick up an injured guy sometimes, especially if your benches are relatively short.
But for how long until he breaks again?Mathews targets 2 years before Woodhead came to town was 59, 57 .... then dropped to 33 first year with Woodhead (who had 86 targets) ... very safe to say Mathews gets more involved in the passing game ... Mathews will be a 2nd half high end RB1
who cares?
