Why is PJ Pope important to the Packers? Zone blocking.
The Packers in a matter of 8 weeks appear to have mastered Jeff Jagodzinski's version of Alex Gibb's zone blocking scheme. Plug anyone in and they will perform.
I won't go into the examples of the Broncos and the Falcons. Their success with mediocre backs is well documented.
Look instead exclusively at the Packers. Noah Herron. Horrible. The scheme made him a 100 yard back in his start. Vernand Morency? Mediocre at best. Looks like Tatum Bell running in the zone blocking scheme (and coincidently got hurt too). Ahman Green? On the downhill slide until her gets behind that zone blocking scheme.
Thus - PJ Pope. Give him a month to practice in the scheme and he will be capable of putting up (GASP) Noah Herron or Vernand Morency numbers.
No, PJ Pope is not the running gold - Jeff Jagodzinski is. His scheme and his teaching......
