Wide Receivers - X, Y, Z? (1 Viewer)

In technical terms, what is the X, Y, Z position for a WR?

Which is typically the #1 WR, or the position that gets the most looks?

For example, what letter does Chris Chambers, TO, Moss, Marvin Harrison, Chad Johnson etc. play?

I think most of the time the #1 receiver is the X, but it will change with Team, offensive scheme and formation.

Think of it this way:X = Split End

Y = TE

Z = Flanker

The flanker is usually on the same side of the formation as the TE in a typical pro set. On most teams this is who they consider their primary receiver. Now, that being said, some want their posession receiver on that side and the deep guy to fly free down the other side and some like that reversed. Depening upon who that team's WR1 is and his tendency all of that stuff changes by formation and coach's prerogative.

Okay. So having said all this, with Brown the Z receiver, Smith the Y receiver, and Stallworth the X receiver, who will end up with the more fantasy value this season, and is Brown considered the #1 WR?

Exactly right. NFL teams run combinations of patterns that work together. The Z and Y are generally on the same side of the field, and the QB's first look will generally be to that side.But the X is easier to isolate in single coverage.

In some offenses, the Z is the #1 WR. In other offenses, the X is the #1 WR. The former is more popular than the latter, but there's no set rule.

Most teams consider their SE position (X) to be the possession guy in the WCO. So if the Eagles hold true to that then expect Stallworth to have more receptions, but Brown to have more yards since the flanker is usually reserved for who the team considers their deep threat/biggest weapon.

The questions to ask yourself:

- Do I play in a PPR league?

- How many more receptions would you expect Stallworth to have than Brown?

- Will Brown make up for the difference in yards and/or TDs?

Bump. I have an idea for this thread that may shed some light on this and help us all in the long run. Let's get the entire Shark Pool to contribute to finding the assignments for each NFL team. Say you're a Cowboy fan. If you can, tell us what position 'letter' (Z, etc...) and/or 'name' (flanker, etc...) each WR is playing. If we can do this we'll have a much better idea of how these positions are used and named by each team.

That would be misleading. You would look at the list and see most Z's were the leading recievers and then start thinking that your guy is a leading reciever because he was a z. That would not always be the case. Your much better off going by the depth chart on DD.

The idea that people using the information will know how to use the information was meant to be implied in this idea. If anyone does what you are proposing then they have totally missed the point of the information.
