Will Derrick Henry play in week 17? (1 Viewer)

Week 17 results don't matter for Tennessee and Jax -- only week 18 when they play each other for the AFC South title.

But see this!

In 2019, the #Titans made Derrick Henry inactive against the #Saints with the game having no impact on the standings...
Peter Schrager @PSchrags

I suggested this on @gmfb ...
The winner of Titans-Jaguars in Week 18 wins the AFC South.
Do you bench all your players and rest them in Week 17 if that's case? Or do you try to break the slump (Tennessee) or keep the momentum going (Jacksonville)?

Swell. Thanks for calling this to my attention. I guess I'm going to have to hope that the Titans have enough shame not to attempt to win the division in week 18 with a sub-.500 record. Looks like I'm going to need a contingency plan if they don't.

Maybe the small possibility of a week 18 tie, along with just putting a W on the board will be enough motivation to give Henry a decent (if reduced) number of carries.

My first thought is that he's 110 yards behind Jacobs for the rushing title, and he's going to want to go for it.

But he won the 2019 title with a 200+ yard performance in week 17. Which means they sat him despite it being a close race.

Could see TN deciding to sit him to lessen the hits. I do think it'll be an all or nothing thing. If he's playing, they'll pound the ball with him. I don't see a situation in which they put him out there for a handful of carries and then pull him after 7 carries for 30 yards or something. They either want to compete in that game or they don't.

so bad for me. I work Sunday night and won't be in a good spot to check inactives.
Really wish substitution rules were more prevalent in fantasy leagues

Thankfully they play Thursday, so we'll know prior to any decisions.

Eh no guarantee? Or they could "start" him and pull him after a drive, quarter, or if there's any hint of hard contact.

On the other hand, I think it's still possible (but would require several games to fall the right way) for the Titans to lose to the Jags but still make the playoffs as a wild card if they beat Dallas.

I don't know why everyone is focused on the division title when the wild card is still open.

Edit: May change depending on the result of tonight's game. If the Chargers lose, the wildcard door opens wider.

I was wondering the same thing when I heard TN had nothing to play for. I will put either Pollard or Higgins in Henry's spot I'd he's out. Just a matter of who.

Pretty sure Henry had an injury in 2019. I think it was a hamstring or something like that. Probably something he could have played through, but it wasn't like they just sat him just to do it.

After playing around with the ESPN playoff machine, it appears possible for the Titans to beat the Cowboys, lose to the Jaguars, and still make the playoffs in a single precise scenario where Tennessee, Las Vegas, and the LA Chargers finish in a 3-way tie for the wildcard at 8-9 and Tennessee is the one that gets in. Would require the Chargers to lose tonight and the rest of their games, but, if they do lose tonight then Tennessee plays on Thursday when there's still a chance, before knowing if the Chargers will lose out Sunday.

538 has TEN with a less than 0.1% chance of beating DAL, losing to JAC, and making the playoffs. If the Chargers lose to the Colts, that only moves the needle to 0.2%. I'm going to suggest that TEN losing to JAC and still making the playoffs would be an unlikely outcome.

Oh of course. But no NFL coach is going to bench his team on Thursday when "there's still a chance".

Relax,he's starting. Ian just ran a hypothetical up the flagpole to see who would salute it.
And to qualify,he's not on any of my teams.

If a wildcard is still in play with a win week 17 and a loss week 18, he's obviously playing like normal.
If not...........

Looking at it, man, 8-9 is gonna be insanely tough to make the playoffs.
They may as well rest the team.
Unfortunately, my title team has ONLY Henry as a viable option. Yuck

This could be the worst case scanario if he does start but doesn’t play a whole game. Have to hope that Willis can keep the game close - if it gets ugly early, that could encourage Vrabel to just sit Henry in the 2nd half.

He's surely on Vrabel's list of guys that have "been there and showed up for us and played through some things.'
He was saying he wanted to play though. Wants to do things the right way etc

Sorry that doesn't help

Being designated with an actual injury and short week makes me think they'll use that as a legit excuse to rest him. Next week is the whole year.

Agree. I need him for the championship but would have been a tough matchup vs Dallas vs no QB so maybe a blessing in disguise.

Kewl. So I’ll be starting either Zonovan Knight or Marlon Mack. 🤷 Henry is one of the only reasons I’m still in this.

I saved a dollar in FAAB for this type of crap. My opponent with Henry gets to see me buy Haskins for that dollar and then drop him before the game starts for a kicker that I need to pick up. #BigBrain

Before making the transaction, just make sure to point at your Frank Dux opponent and say “you are next!”

It probably shouldn't be allowed to pick up a player then drop that same player for another player all within the same waiver period.
However, if it's allowed........do it!!!!

Strongly disagree with this. I have picked up a BU player many times if my starter is questionable than dropped them before the start of the game once I know my starter is playing.

Don't think Haskins is startable even if he's the only RB they have. Doesn't seem like a good matchup to have to rely on someone.

Good for you. I don't think roster churning should be allowed.
But as I said, if it is, go for it

I disagree with you but would want to make sure somebody can't pickup and drop all the QBs to keep their opponent from getting one.

If someone picks up Bridgewater tomorrow because Tua is questionable than he gets cleared on Sunday I don't have a problem with them dropping him and grabbing someone else during that free agency period because Bridgewater only has value on your roster if Tua doesn't play. Also One of my leagues has short benches so if a player gets injured during the week and I had made a few FA moves to fill my bench I might be stuck getting rid of a starter or taking a zero at a position. Obviously this week doesn't really matter because it is championship week so anyone not starting is expendable as long as my opponent doesn't pick them up to improve their team.

Ideally I'd set it up that anyone picked up and dropped within 24 hours is an unrestricted free agent, no waivers so no blocking out other owners
I do that for my leagues. No picking up and dropping players to put them on waivers so other owners can't add.

Realistically, what motivation is there for the team to play anyone who could use the rest? I only remember this type of scenario happening a handful of times (this week doesn't matter at all, but next week determines your playoff hopes). Anyone know what the teams did?
If they use Henry, I can't imagine giving him a workhorse role. Makes more sense to get Malik more passing reps and sling the ball all over the field. They need him to grow up fast.

So you agree AND disagree??

Henry said today that he'll do whatever coach tells him to; trying to avoid the question if he's playing or not.
For FF, I think you guys wanted a yes to that Q

Who's his backup?
Julius Chestnut
The hot dog eating guy?
My head goes there too.
Also he's from Sacred Heart which makes me think a Catholic high school or the hospital on Scrubs.

They've been trying to give Haskins the third RB spot but Chestnut always beats him out since camp.
I wouldn't be surprised if that happens yet again against the Cowboys- time share with Chestnut playing better.
Haskins seems very unspecial but with Hilliard and Henry there's only a few opportunities usually. Chestnut comes in rarin to go usually. Maybe Haskins needs time to get rolling?
