Will Liberals Influence Red States / Cities like they have NY, Chicago, SF and LA? (1 Viewer)

Also, it seems counterintuitive that conservatives complain about the cities then flee from the cities.   I would think a way to fix it would be to have more conservatives there, change the voting base, and elect R leadership.   Can't do that fleeing to the country.

California Gov. Newsom's budget budget projects a $45.7B surplus - the second year in a row of a surplus. The state's fiscal condition has been improving since the 2008/2009 financial crises and their debt service ratio ranks 25th among all states. #muniland
Dang, look at that.

Now I understand how California does what it does AND is still able to ship $6.7B in net payments to the federal government (covering the entirety of the net payment to the great state of Kansas).

But it's just another successful, cooperative, patriotic blue state doing its thing with no fanfare -- so taken for granted at this point no one even starts a thread.

Can you imagine what we'd be reading here and hearing on FOX News if it were the Blue states that needed cash from the Red?  The questions from Joe's friends would be LIT.

I think you'll find a lot of those same principles alive and well in urban areas as well, you just won't hear anyone on the right side of the media talking about it. It's imperative that large cities and states that vote Democratic be demonized, and they always will be.
I'm sure you are right, but those folks in urban areas are affected by left politics and it has been that way for a long time.  They keep coming back for the freebies.  It's a never ending circle.  Like Lyndon Johnson said, I'll keep them voting Democrat for 200 years, or something like that.

Well, proof is in the pudding.  Look back at a few posts where I marked DEM for the exodus and said "should say something".  Let's face it, there are a lot of DEM cities in disarray and that is because of DEM policies.  Don't fight that because you will lose.  Places like California where regular folks can no longer live is a result of DEM politics.  You cannot refute that,  plain and simple.  They are leaving because their standard of living is compromised and that is happening in DEM cities all across America.
I don't know if this "refutes" it, but I moved from NYC to Florida six years ago for reasons having nothing to do with taxes, crime or regulations. It was mostly a cost of living/housing issue in advance of having our second kid, partly a weather issue, and partly a function of my wife having grown up in Florida. Obviously, the weather and family things have nothing to do with politics. Maybe the cost issue is indirectly related to the city's governance, but I have a hard time imagining NYC is suddenly going to become cheap no matter who's in charge there. It's just an expensive place to live.

Yeah, that's why I like City livin'---all those "freebies"

Still waiting for those facts showing a correlation between democratic policies and city ruination, and really interested to see what "we" can do to stop it, assuming it's all the democrats' fault.  Tax cuts for the wealthy?  Take away access to health care and abortions?  Cut education and social programs (i.e. "freebies")?  Lower the minimum wage?

Love the city.  Great place.  Unfortunately it's broke, and I mean dead ### broke.  I don't know how they are going to get themselves out of that with pensions being locked in and the graft that has ballooned those to massively unsustainable levels.  At some point the house of cards will crumble.

Like NO, it's a wonderful place with some serious flaws.

Chicago is a great city to visit.

pay attention during hurricane season.   only left one time in 5 years,  gulf side.          if you got pets or children/grandchildren visiting - just know every body of water has something in it.
Had an insurance client in Florida quite a few years ago with a small man made lake in front of the building.  Came in from lunch one day to see an alligator going back into it.  We used to get them on the reservoir when I lived in Jackson MS.  One time in the late 90's they got so bad they contemplated allowing hunting licenses for them.  I couldn't think of what could go wrong with every redneck in Rankin Co MS going out on the water in a boat with his shotgun.  I should add, pretty much everyone out there on the weekend would be drunk.

The 45th annual National Movers Study just came out.  The top 5 states people are leaving are:

1. New Jersey

2. Illinois

3. New York

4. Connecticut

5. California

He'll get to this right after he gives the list of "republican" cities that haven't been ruined.  I have a cot on standby from when you pass out from holding your breath.
maybe deal with the top 5 states first?   that list says a lot.  any ideas why those are the top states?

seeing one, like one that's been around for awhile...it's crazy.   it's jaw dropping, thank goodness i wasn't close.

am i off topic though?  do blue cities needs gators?

I grew up in a Northeastern suburb and there were some pretty good values there as well. Now I live in a big city in a red state and there's a lot I like about that, along with some things I miss about living up north. It's almost as if every area of the country is filled with good people but also has its share of problems.

Not saying this is what you were implying, but I swear, sometimes it feels like people think blue-state kids spend their weekdays in communist indoctrination camps and their Sundays in Satanism School.
Well, their schools and colleges are run by those that are more interested in teaching their opinion rather than what is in the school text book, and want to eliminate some of those as well..  What is wrong with this picture?

If you owned a store during a riot, they'd come in handy to have inside.  I was thinking about 5 German Shepherds would do it, but gators could work.  Although they  tend to not give warnings and you'd lose your windows and likely a couple people would lose limbs before they could retreat.

Just following the lead of the OP. Man, this question must be really tough to answer given all the effort to deflect or change the subject.

I'd rather not live in a place where they have mobs rush the store and grab a bunch of stuff.  If I did, I would love to see that store defend their property effectively,  I'm still waiting to see that happen in San Francisco.

Lol, There hasn't been a Rebublican mayor since 1952 in Philadelphia and no amount of conservatives staying or added to the gene pool will change that.  For reference, our current mayor, Jim Kenney DIDN'T campaign during the last election.  He beat his GOP opponent by more than 80% of the vote.  He knew he didn't even need to put out a message.  Any message.  Moving out isn't just easier, its the only answer.

ETA: City Council has been run by Dems for as long as that as well, dating back to '51.

Lol.  That puts things in perspective.  That's pretty nuts.

If I were to start a thread alleging that conservatives have turned rural areas into intolerant, opioid-infested hellholes that leach Federal dollars because they have underinvested in schools and other public resources and have zero economic prospects beyond building more jails, would that get me reported or nah?

[And for the record, I don't actually believe all of that; I think the explanation is way more complicated. It's just always bothered me that it's considered OK to bash cities, but God forbid you ever say a cross word about the "Heartland", much less that you attribute their problems to a failure of conservative governance.]
Sounds like Polk county. 😆

Wasn’t Frank Rizzo a Republican? Or was he still officially a Dem when he was elected? He was certainly no liberal

Right, because conservatives are notoriously hands-off when it comes to textbooks

It’s like you folks believe all the stereotypes you hear about blue states on Fox News … which is particularly ironic considering that just about every FNC host has chosen to live in NYC

What are Republicans offering? What would they do to improve these cities?
Less government and provide a path to less dependence and more self success is the goal.  Democrats just want to keep more government and more dependence on government, thus more power over people and keep their vote.

Less government? What are you cutting? And how many city jobs?

Haven’t read the entire thread yet so not sure if it’s been covered but on a per capita basis are these cities even in the top 10 in the country for crime or violence? (My quick research says no but I’m certainly no expert).

Fair.  So my idea of sticking around to change it to R might be idiotic.

We still haven't addressed what specific Dem policies are ruining these cities.
I don’t have time to respond to this in the way I should as I have a few specific examples of Philadelphia Dem policies that are having adverse effects, however, complacency is just as bad as bad policy.  The opioid epidemic has torn thru this country and the areas most often referred to are West Virginia, backwoods towns that probably don’t have the resources to deal with it.

I posted this in another thread but it deserves to be posted here. This is Kensington.  It’s a section of Philly just to the east of trendy Northern Liberties.  Democrat leadership has allowed this to happen.  As I stated in the other thread, the council woman for this district is a woman named Maria Quinones-Sanchez.  I slightly know her/met her a few times.  She tanked a low income housing project with community center program space I was involved in because the site was adjacent to her home and she didn’t want to deal with construction.  This is what democratic leadership looks like for the folks in this neighborhood.

Increase funding for policing.  Not be beholdened to the teachers union.  Reduce the ridiculous wage tax that Philly collects.  Not put the focus on making sure municipal employees specify their gender pronouns in emails but rather focus on the drug epidemic sweeping through large chunks of this city.  Actually prosecute crimes.  Crack down on the insane gun violence that plagues black neighborhoods.  Just off the top of my head for my city.  These are all things to which dems do the opposite.

He was a Dem.  a racist one to be sure, but a dem none the less.
OK just looked it up. You’re right that he was a Dem when he served as mayor from ‘72-‘80. Then he got term limited out and a few years later ran in a Dem primary against Wilson Goode. Then a few years after that he did switch parties and got the GOP nomination, narrowly losing to Goode again. Finally, in ‘91 he got the nomination one last time but had a fatal heart attack a few months before the election (probably would have lost to Rendell anyway).

I was only politically aware for those  last couple races, which is why I remember him as a Republican

Yep.  When he actually was in office he was a dem.  Had some last gasp machinations but when he actually had any real impact he was a dem.
You a Philly guy?

I'm sure that these red states/cities are so well run that when the liberals move to them, they'll think "Wow, this place is a utopia. Do not change a thing".

For the record, I think the bigger problem in some of these cities is one party. No good comes from having one party without a strong opposition. Ideas and policies need to be debated and challenged. Without a diversity of opinions, you are always going to end up with bad policy.

Personally, I'd rather vote for a party I disagree with than have one party in power for decades.

We came up for a game and walked the city with my family, it was an eye opening experience for them. Love my Eagles but could never live there or any similar Liberal run city.

The opioid epidemic is the result of democratic policy?  While pharma was pumping opioids into the streets?  Seems a bit of a reach.
