Will Portis go on IR? (1 Viewer)

The competitive portion of the Redskins season is over. Portis has more injuries besides his hand, including his sprained ankle. They also have better depth at RB than most teams with Duckett and Betts.

They're going to be conservative with him for the rest of the year. I have no idea whether they'll put him on IR, but I can't rule that out as a possibility.

Well said...

Supposedly being reported on XXX ESPN radio, local DC area that Portis to go on IR.
ESPN Radio 94.3 WWXT reports Redskins RB Clinton Portis is going on injured reserve. Reporter Bram Weinstein says they're gonna go ahead and operate on Portis' shoulder since their season is technically over anyway (3-6 record, Jason Campbell starting, etc.), giving Portis a head-start on rehab going into 2007. We haven't heard this confirmed by another source but we'll bet it's safe to drop Portis if there are roster adjustments you've been dying to make.

Nothing in print so far. Check back with www.redskins.com for video of Gibbs' after-practice interview. He always leads off with injury info and he's very open about that stuff.

Yes. He's done if they can find a productive player to put on the roster at any position. Preference will be toward defense.

Time for the offensive coaches to show they're worth all that money. They better come up with some answers between now and the start of next season because watching them on offense has been painful so far.

Gibbs, Campbell and apparently Saunders have already said that the game plan will be built around his physical attributes and not Brunell's. With the deep speed on this team between Lloyd, Moss and Randle El, I have a feeling you're going to see a lot more deep passes than you saw from Brunell, at least in the future. How basic they keep the game plan early on remains to be seen, but an approach like the Steelers took with Ben in 2004 (1st in the league in rushing attempts; last in pass attempts) wouldn't surprise me.

Portis officially to IR, according to ESPN. Just heard it on NFL Live. I'm sure there will be a link soon.
I really hope they put him on IR. I don't want to have to make a decision week #15 whether to start Portis, is he gonna re-injure it, is he gonna have fumble problems.Just let me use Betts the rest of the way please!!!!!

I was watching too and they specifically said they were referencing the Washington Post article saying IR is possible. No confirmation yet.

Source: Surgery to end season for Redskins RB Portis

By Len Pasquarelli

ESPN.com

Already sidelined by the broken right hand that he sustained on Sunday afternoon, Washington Redskins star tailback Clinton Portis will undergo surgery on his left shoulder, ESPN.com has learned, and will finish the least productive season of his career in the least palatable manner, on injured reserve.

The Redskins have not yet officially placed Portis on injured reserve, but three league sources confirmed on Tuesday night that the season-ending move is imminent. Portis will be replaced in the starting lineup by five-year veteran Ladell Betts, one of the NFL's top No. 2 tailbacks.

Portis injured his right hand in the first quarter of Sunday's 27-3 loss at Philadelphia, when he stiff-armed Eagles' free safety Brian Dawkins near the sideline. On Monday, the five-year veteran underwent surgery to repair a fracture to the fourth metacarpal. Three surgical screws were inserted to promote stability and hasten the healing process, and Portis will probably be in a sling for about a week.

Team officials initially suggested Portis would miss 3-4 weeks, but might return for the last few games of the season. But after further consideration, the Redskins decided that bringing Portis back late in the year was perhaps too risky. Given the decision that he wouldn't play again in 2006, Portis and team officials then decided it was best to have his left shoulder repaired as well. The shoulder surgery probably will take place in the next week.

The rationale: By having the shoulder surgery now, instead of waiting until the end of the season, Portis would have more time to rehabilitate, and should be ready for the offseason program in the spring.

Portis, 25, suffered a partial dislocation of the left shoulder in the opening preseason game at Cincinnati on Aug. 13. He sat out the final three preseason games and did not start in the Sept. 11 regular-season opener against the Minnesota Vikings. Portis did appear in that game, but was clearly affected by the shoulder, and managed just 39 yards on 10 carries coming off the bench. He then sat out the second game of the season entirely because of the shoulder.

Regarded as the centerpiece of the Washington offense, Portis has played the entire season in discomfort because of the shoulder injury and its lingering effects. He has carried 127 times for 523 yards and seven touchdowns, but those numbers are well below the standards he established in his first four seasons in the league. Originally drafted by Denver, and then traded to the Redskins in 2004 in a deal that sent cornerback Champ Bailey to the Broncos, the former University of Miami star ran for more than 1,300 yards in each of his first four seasons, and for more than 1,500 yards in three of those campaigns.

In 68 appearances, including 63 starts, Portis has 6,453 yards and 52 touchdowns on 1,385 rushes. He has established himself as a workhorse-type back and, even with the injuries truncating his season, his rushing statistics are among the best in the NFL for a player in his first five seasons.

Betts is an excellent receiver and third-down back, but has also been productive on those occasions when he has filled in for Portis and registered some carries. He has 82 rushes for 366 yards and one touchdown this season, with 30 receptions for 231 yards.

Coach Joe Gibbs said Monday that, with Portis sidelined, veteran tailback T.J. Duckett would have his role expanded. The Redskins traded third- and fourth-round draft picks after Portis suffered the shoulder injury this summer, acquiring him in a three-team deal as an insurance policy at running back. But the former Atlanta first-round draft choice has appeared in just three games and carried only seven times.

OK, do I just cut Portis and pick up Betts?

I mean, Portis does me no good even if he comes back week 15 if I don't have a decent running back weeks 11, 12, 13 and 14 when the Skins I believe had a decent schedule.

Redskins | Portis to undergo surgery on his shoulder

Published Tue Nov 14 11:13:00 p.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis (hand, shoulder) will undergo surgery on his left shoulder. As previously reported, the Redskins plan to put Portis on Injured Reserve. RB Ladell Betts will replace Portis in the starting lineup. Team officials had planned for Portis to miss three-to-four weeks and return for the last few games of the season. The team later decided that bringing him back late in the year might be too risky and believe it would be best for Portis to have his left shoulder repaired as well.

that article doesn't have any source for the WRITERS belief that he will go on IR.On a Skins message board, someone is saything they heard Portis is denying going on IR????
This is correct. In a radio interview last night, Portis said he doesn't know what will happen. He said, at that point in time, he's had no conversation with anyone about going on the IR. He said he hoped to play again this season but understands the benefits of going on IR and starting to heal now.

It's official. From the Redskins official message board:

Ashburn, VA – The Washington Redskins announced today they have allocated running back Clinton Portis to the injured reserve list. The team also announced they have signed tight end Brian Kozlowski. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Kozlowski is an experienced veteran that is a talented blocker and solid special teams contributor. He will wear jersey number 86.Kozlowski, 6-3, 265 lbs., has played 12 seasons in the NFL as a tight end and special teams contributor. He played for the Redskins in 2005, appearing in all 16 games and grabbing two receptions for 26 yards and posting a special teams tackle. He also played with the Redskins in 2004, appearing in 11 games with one start and contributing three catches for 29 yards.Kozlowski played the first three years with the New York Giants and then seven with the Atlanta Falcons. During his career he has started 29 games and appeared in 176. He has posted 83 catches for 972 yards and eight touchdowns. He had his most productive season in 2001 with the Falcons when he had 15 catches for 270 yards and one touchdown. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Giants in 1993. He started 43 straight games during his collegiate career at the University of Connecticut, finishing his senior season with 43 catches for 526 yards and a touchdown.

Now he'll have lots of time to work with Sheriff Gonna Getcha to find Southeast Jerome and have them all appear in an Easterns Motors ad.

BTW, the Easterns Motors jinx continues. Lavar, now Portis, and Moss got hurt some too.
