Will the Cards get some respect (1 Viewer)

Billy Ball Thorton

I have predicted a Cards win twice here. I am sure the threads can be found.

In 06 Vs. Bears

And in 07 vs. Steelers

My only two predictions.

This time I am not predicting the outcome I just hope if they win some respect might be given. It's terrible to see a team you route for finally win a playoff game and still people talk as if they are terrible.

So I say IF they beat Carolina show them some love.

Maybe a little, but they almost got beat by my horrible Niners and got owned by Cassel and his Patriots a few weeks back.

I haven't respected them all year long but I'll give them a lot more if they win this game on the road. During the regular season they only had two quality wins all season long. They did play a close one in CAR earlier though.

People don't disrespect a team for no reason. When you give up over 45 points in three separate games in a year, people are going to dog your team. When you play in the worst division of all time -- one that went 10-30 in non-division games this year -- and you proceed to go 3-7 outside that awful division (with none of those wins coming since the bye week), you're going to be looked at as a below average team that is lucky to be where it is.

As long as I've been watching football, the Cardinals have looked like a rudderless franchise. They usually reside near the top of the draft. Sometimes they hit on players. Sometimes they miss. If they hit, they don't seem to keep them. Coaches come and go. But Whisenhunt seems to finally have something going for the franchise. I have more respect for them now than I ever have.

I think people bag on the Cards, and at times deservedly so, but they do have some individual talent on the D side of the ball. Winning out there will be a tall task............. but you still have to play the game. I don't even know what the line is, but I imagine it is at least 7.5.

You realize that besides Detroit (they don't count as an NFL team), they are the 2nd worst franchise in the league only arguably better than the Bungles.

They are the Cubs of the NFL so they will have to win it all to get a little respect.
Please don't insult a quality franchise like the Arizona Cardinals by comparing them to the Cubs. The Cardinals have actually won a championship in the last century (In Chicago no less) and have also not rolled over and died with winless post seasons the last two times they got there.

The Cards have a little bit of my respect. They actually made the playoffs, and actually won a game.

Do I think they are better then any other team that made it? Nope.

Do I think they have even a snowballs chance in hell of a Super Bowl appearance? Nope.

BUT....

They're better then all but a few teams that didn't make it.

So...define what you mean by "respect". To me, that's a team where when the schedule comes out, you don't circle them immediately as a W (if you're team's good) or you do circle them with a L (if your team's bad).

I don't know what the OP really means by "respect". To me, if they're even able to hang close with Carolina, they'll have mine. And by that I mean they wouldn't get that W circle going into next year.

The Cards have lost four games this year by twenty or more points. They are basically identical to Kurt Warner. If it's sunny and 72 degrees, and the crowd is on their side, the high flying offense clicks. Get them outside that comfort zone, and they turn from a good team to a bad team. They aren't even average.

They won their home playoff game against Atlanta, which was a good start considering how they'd been playing, but they go on the road this weekend. Luckily for them, the weather in Carolina won't be that cold. That gives them a chance to keep it close, but by 'close', I mean they may not get blown out by 20+.

Win a big game on the road, and the respect will come. They're already getting some based on their defensive performance against Atlanta. Do that against Carolina on the road and there will be a lot more respect.

 This is a pretty tough hurtle for the Cards to overcome IMO. At home is one thing, but on the road (east coast) against Carolina? If they win this game, they will gain a lot of people's respect. I hope it's not a blowout (by Carolina that is).

If they would somehow win this game, and Philly can beat the Giants, wouldn't Arizona host the championship game?

Yep.

The Cards seem to be a much better team when starting Edge.

Twice I saw Edge pick up blitzing LBs and stop them when they had a clear path to Warner.

Just curious if you all still think it's luck or now have some respect for AZ as a team...

I have no idea who wins the Superbowl but it should be a fun game to watch.

As a Cardinal fan, I finaly think that we are getting the respect that we EARNED. We did not deserve respect prior to the Panther win, but now we do, and I honestly feel we are getting respect from everyone except Steeler fans. They think their defense will pummel our offense and they will dominate the Super Bowl, but I am used to overconfidence from our opponents fans by now, aren't you?

I don't get why some people care so much about anonymous folks on a message board respecting their team. Guess what? If the Cards smack-da-steelers-in-da-mouf and win by 45 points some people still won't respect them. My suggestion is to enjoy next week, and the game, and don't worry about who respects your squad.

Thats all to easy to say as a Steeler fan isnt it... I would like to see a team I care for get some message board love... Try rooting for a team that always get's bashed....I guess as a child I could have taken the EASY road like most Steeler fans a just started out with a team on top.Not saying thats you.

I don't understand this quote at all? You guys have earned the respect of Steelers fans. Which Steelers fans are predicting a blowout? I can tell you right now that I WISH the Steelers were facing the Eagles, Panthers or Giants. I wasn't afraid of the Ravens or Chargers but I'm very afraid of the Cardinals.

Yes being born and raised in Pittsburgh is "taking the EASY road" :suds: . Dude, I don't have any more control where I was born than you do.

Come on man...how many threads on FBG state, "Can the Cardinals contain Santonio Holmes and Hines Ward?" or "Polamalu will shutdown the Cards passing game". All of the statements around here are being made by Cardinals fans. I'm actually pleased that the national media and fans are asking whether the Steelers can contain Warner-Fitz-Boldin, I was worried the Steelers would be overconfident going into this game.

:goodposting: as hard as this is to believe, I honestly think the Steelers are the team that is flying under the radar in this game. The national media really seems to be focusing on the Cards right now. Every other radio show is about Fitzgerald or Warner. I think most experts are picking the Steelers to win but nobody would be surprised if the Cardinals won the game.

This whole Cardinals respect thing is getting a little overplayed IMO.

Just go win the freaking game. Everything else is inconsequential.

Yup, that is pretty much what the players and coaches are saying. It seems the only people concerned about respect are a few Cardinal fans and the media.

Overplayed???? They have been called the worst team in playoff history, and until last week they had very little respect. If anything it's underplayed..

I don't think there are too many Steelers fans on this board that think the Steelers are going to wallop the Cardinals. If anyone is not giving respect it is the Cardinals that are saying the Steelers defense can't cover and that Ben will be a turnover machine if he even looks in the direction of DRC.

The Cardinals have a great passing attack and lately the running game and defense are playing much better. They are a very dangerous team and could very well pull of the upset, especially if the Steelers turn the ball over. How is that for showing respect?

You earn respect, you can not demand it. The media doesn't respect anybody, they just want a story.

Fair enough. The "dominate the Super Bowl" quote by me was a little over the top. That being said, I have had NFL Radio on all week at my desk and I don't think I have heard ONE steeler fan that shares your respect for the Cards. I also agree with the above posts that none of that matters and it will all be settled on the field, but what fun would message board banter be if we us Card fan's can't whine about our lack of respect?

To be honest, I do think the Steelers are going to win this game. I'm sure as a Cardinals fan, you feel the Cardinals are going to win. It's what makes us fans of the game. However, I do not have nearly the level of confidence that I had going into our game against the Ravens. The Cardinals have a potent enough offense to beat the Steelers. Coupled with their timely defense, they're extremely scary. I wouldn't be surprised if the Steelers won this game in a blowout. I also wouldn't be surprised if the Cardinals won the game convincingly. Thats the thing about the Cards.......they always had the talent to beat anyone and they're now putting it all together.

Considering how the NFC playoffs went, I'm not sure judging a team by the division it plays in is a wise idea. If we dropped the 08 Steelers in the 08 NFC West, it doesn't change the talent level on the 08 Steelers. They are who they are.

This is a ridiculous statement. Virtually all posts by Steeler fans that promote the defense or the team in general are found in response to the threads concerning "can the Steelers contain Fitz and Boldin" or "DRC is an elite CB" , etc. I have personally enjoyed (and responded) to the posts that suggest the Steelers passing defense is EXTREMELY (not my caps) overrated and the cherry-picked stats concerning Hank Baskett, etc.In fact, one could make a strong case that the Cardinal fanbase is showing more disrespect to the Steelers in the Shark Pool than the other way around. I believe most Steeler fans understand why this is happening, given the fact that the Cardinals have been the underdog in all four games, have a long history of ineptness, have endured media questioning their legitimacy for two months or so by now, and so on. Personally, I don't care. Respect is nice, but you cannot control what others say. People can disrespect the Steelers all they want. I just checked the Seattle P-I forums on a whim and saw that there are currently four threads on the first page complaining about SB XL. That was three years ago. If anything, I like the fact that they are still whining and disrespecting the Steelers because I know it's because of Pittsburgh's success in that game and in general over the years. In other words, Cardinal fans, enjoy the fact that you can even perceive disrespect because normally in late January the Arizona Cardinals are essentially invisible in these forums and in the professional football world as a whole.

I absolutely agree with your take. I am by no means a blind homer when it comes to the Cards. Hell, any true Cards fan is nervous as hell, because we are used to getting our hopes up and then being crushed. I was confident in our ability to beat the Falcons and the Eagles, but I also thought Carolina was going to destroy us. Our D stepped up and finaly played to their ability.I think it will be tough for the young Cards to overcome the pressure of being on the Big Stage of the Superbowl. They will have to play as disciplined against the run as they did against Atlanta and Carolina to even have a shot IMO. I have been bagging on the Steelers O-Line all year, but they have really stepped it up as well. I think the first quarter will tell alot about how our front 7 on D matches up against your front line on O. I also think that Clancy need to let it all out and not be afraid to bring the pressure. We have several guys on D that have the ability to get after the passer or drop back in coverage, so if we can cause some confusion, I think the turnovers may come. When we play too conservative on D is when we get beat.

I think the Card's offense should get enough points to win the game, so IMO it all rides on our D and which Cards D shows up. Should be a good one, but like you said, if the Cards D is overwhelmed, they could get blown out.

On a related note, the only thing that is more annoying than the predictable lame "How do you feel?" questions to the winning team by the media is the even-more predictable "No one believed we could win" comment from half of the victorious team. In this case, I could see why Cardinals would say this should they win. Normally, it's way overdone.

(Note to Cardinal fans: This Steeler fan said "should they win" concerning the Cardinals. Note the respect implicit in that phrasing. )

I have been a Card supporter and poster since Ive been here and the only teamive disrespected was Tenn earlier in the year.. That blew up in my face.... I have noticed more company now, but im not going to run out get a new bumper sticker and avatar and start smack talking opposing teams.

I think this game IMO is a 50-50. I bumped the orignal post to see if anyone opinions had changed, and I guess look for some praise for the team I support.

Look in the thread "Quess the score of the Super Bowl". The Cardinals are getting a lot of respect.

Billy Ball - As a TEN fan (who razzed you a bit in thatthread) - best of luck, I'll be watching the game and I have not decided who to root for this time - I guess that'll be decided during the game.

Thanks Bro.. It would have been nice to see a Tenn vs Az superbowl as niether were given much of a chance at the start of the season..

Why would anyone give a #### about "respect"? The Cards will either be the champs or they won't. Who gives a #### if nobody "respects" them if they win?

That would have been a good one indeed! At least one team would have been exposed
