Assuming the cost is affordable and the risk in line with other brain surgeries, would you have a brain chip implanted?

For completely paralyzed people like Neuralink's first patient, the answer seems like a no-brainer. But the brain chip industry has raised billions in funding. Clearly these investors think the market for brain chips is bigger than just the paralyzed population. The first implant patient said he can now play blitz chess on the computer. He beats his friends in first person shooter video games. The potential seems limited only by your imagination. With merely a thought, the lights could be turned off, doors locked, temperature adjusted, tea brewing. In the future, you might find most vendors expecting payment by chip--brain chip. You don't have a chip? What kind of Luddite are you?

My favorite presentation on Shark Tank was the creator of the bionic ear. The sharks treated him as if he had escaped the sanatorium. Who would have guessed that he was on the money all along? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDkDg33uGuc

I could envision a scenario where it becomes like a smart phone and even non disabled people opt to get it. Transhumanism and all.. For myself, I'm apprehensive to even get cochlear implants but I put maybe.

I believe this is the next iteration of brain treatments. I have a friend with Parkinson’s, and he has brain implants controlled by another implant in his chest. It has helped with his shakes. As for me (with terminal brain cancer), I’m watching the developments with extracting blood/fluids from the brain, modifying it in some manner, and then reinjecting it back into the brain ..:essentially fighting the tumor (glioma) from the inside. My trick will be to stay alive long enough for that technology to be fully tested and approved.

There is an Optune cap that can be worn. I’m not sure if that works with brain implants. But it has to be worn 75% of the time, and it only adds about a month or two to survival rates.

I'm normally one who thinks the privacy paranoia is out of control and unnecessary, but going this far does give me pause.

But if it's just more overblown worry, I'd be up for it.

What could be a juicier target for ransom than a surgically implanted device?

True, this would be something I hesitate on , but so far, I'm still waiting for all the other privacy paranoia to actually happen. My Alexa hasn't yet gotten me fired or targeted for arrest or whatever it is people keep thinking is going to happen. I decided to just enjoy the tech for what it provides.

Depends what it can do.

I'm less interested in controlling the outside world than i am balancing my own biochemistry. If I can self-balance my seratonin and dopamine receptors, maybe.

It's happening, it just hasn't happened to you (yet)

Think of all the hacking activity associated with encrypted data and ransoms. We've seen these in abundance.

Implanted, connected devices like this will be a similar target.

I'm surprised no Severance posts yet. The Lumon Industries chip may not make you any smarter, but it does keep you from being distracted by work at home and home from work. So you always have that going for you.

Even though I'm in great shape physically...I've eaten a lot of sugar over the years and fear that dementia or some other neurological condition could be in my future.

I'd 100% do a chip if it improved my quality of life and is safe.

As for me (with terminal brain cancer)
****, man. sorry to hear this. fight the good fight!!

OK, I saw that too but thought I….

Hey Tri-man 47 wait, wut!?!?

And happy vibes/prayers/wishes/hugs
Yeah, I didn’t have ‘aggressive brain cancer’ on my bingo card. But coming up on the 1 year mark in several days , I’m doing very well …just a little clumsy and weak on my left side. Not enough to stop me from my current training for April’s Boston Marathon (albeit with slowww expectations), which I’d qualified for a month before this whole party started. The good news is that I’ve grown a lot closer to God through all this.

I know a guy who worked in a formerly classified field and was part of a team that figured out how to hack pace makers so there is that.

You get the Terminator implant.
