On his option for a backup running back if McGahee is not able to start: “You saw it in the preseason. It was Le’Ron McClain. He’s our backup halfback at this point, and he did a nice job.”

Rookie coaches learn fast!
Odd. Is everyone just ignoring this?
If you are reading this to mean that McClain is somehow ahead of Rice in the depth chart, I think you are mistaken. McGahee has been out during the preseason. While McGahee has been out, Rice has been the starter, and McClain has been the backup. The coach is just saying that will continue if McGahee can't go.

This is right.

So is McGahee going to play just enough that there is not enough value to start either him or Rice week 1
McGahee is stubborn when it comes to sitting out b/c of injuries. In 2004, week 16 he was reported out all week due to knee problems (even up to 30 minutes prior to game time) so I benched him. He comes out and rushes for 102 yds and 2 TD's. Ever since taking over the starting job in Buffalo (2004) he has only missed 3 games, some of which he could have sat out. I expect him to play based on his stubbornness and b/c there's a rookie in town that everyone loves. McGahee has something to prove.

I sure do hope you're right!

Thanks missed that "backup" part. Really had me  as McClain was a FB at Bama.

you must not have played sports. It's called passion and competitiveness, NOT stubbornness.

According to this, McGahee practiced today, but was "limited."

First injury report of the season!

Here we go.

Defensive tackle Kelly Gregg (arthroscopic knee surgery) and quarterback Troy Smith (tonsil infection) did not practice. Smith has been essentially ruled out by coach John Harbaugh for Sunday's home and season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. Gregg may also join Smith on the sidelines.

Free safety Ed Reed (nerve impingement), running back Willis McGahee (arthroscopic knee surgery) and tight end Todd Heap (right calf) were limited in practice.

On the Bengals' side, quarterback Carson Palmer (broken nose) and wide receiver Chad Johnson (partially torn labrum in left shoulder) fully participated in practice. Starting fullback Jeremi Johnson (knee) did not practice.

Sportsline had the following blurb:

Willis McGahee, RB BAL

News: Ravens RB Willis McGahee (knee) was limited in practice Wednesday and will be listed as questionable for Week 1 against Cincinnati. McGahee missed all four preseason games after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

Analysis: If he's healthy, McGahee will face the Bengals for the third time as a Raven in Week 1. In two games last season, McGahee managed 171 total yards against Cincinnati with one touchdown. Keep an eye on McGahee's progress this week and consider him a No. 2 Fantasy option if he can start this week.

Did play sports (Div. II) in college and still do but regardless, the term stubborn was used as a compliment. I meant that he very rarely misses due to injury, even when it is considered the "right" thing to do by team doctors. You're right, he does this b/c of his competitiveness. Bad choice of words on my part, but you understand my point.

I understand you now. At first, i thought you were pissed because Willis was trying to get on the field. It's all good!

McGahee will start week one.

No link....just fantasy instincts.

What to expect? I would say.....70 yards and a TD. McGahee is a tough SOB.

What's the deal with his relationship with the team? There seems to be one fantasy site that keeps reporting that McGahee is on the outs with the team and they are looking for Rice to be the starter so they can cut McGahee.I for one don't believe this to be true but this site (unnamed) continues to report this. McGahee during his career has been durable and not missed much time due to injury (3 games in almost 4 years), he was a workhorse last year and produced for a bad team. So the only knock on him is that he doesn't like to practice during the offseason with the team? They knew that when he came from Buffalo. In fact, all of his antics in Buffalo were known when they traded for him so why is this such a big deal now? Or is it a big deal? I haven't seen much reported on his relationship with the Ravens other than this unnamed site, could they just be going out on a limb or is there something to this?

I'm sure the Ravens homers can give the best indication, but one has to keep in mind that you have a new coaching staff that went out and selected Ray Rice reasonably early in the draft. While that's not a slight against McGahee, who is a proven workhorse entity, I would say that his unquestioned hold as the clear-cut starter is not nearly as cemented as would be the case if Billick were still there.

Quote from coach today re McGahee

• It was interesting listening to John Harbaugh talk about running back Willis McGahee Wednesday afternoon. McGahee has practiced very little during training camp, and Harbaugh might go with rookie Ray Rice more than usual even if McGahee returns.

'The interesting thing about coaching is you don't go from February to July to the season," Harbaugh said. "You plan from February or March, but it really is day to day. So when you've got Ray Rice out there practicing, and you don't have Willis McGahee, that's what you do. That's what you become. So, Willis is a bonus in my mind because he hasn't been practicing, anyway. If he gets out there, it's going to be great to have him out there. We've got to play on Sunday with the guys we've got, and we plan on playing very well."

Doesn't sound good for McGahee when coach is saying this on the Wed before opening weekend.

The way my preseason luck has been running, they will probably play just enough to cancel each other out for fantasy purposes :)

I'm going to go grab the keys to the Ray Rice Bandwagon and wax it up for Sunday :blackdot: Still find it hard to believe McGahee playing Sunday under the current conditions, I own both but would love to see Willis sit out for the first game.
