So are you guys running 8? In the 10 minutes I played with it I was impressed. Really liked the tiles
yes I am.
same here...won't go back to iOS
As soon as my contract is up, I'm looking to move towards another mobile platform from Android. Can you guys who are WinPhone tell me more about it? I love that new Nokia device.
HTC 8X owner - Was the only Win device available at the time I bought from Verizon. It's fantastic as far a look/feel goes, which is very important to me. I've got a super nice Canon DSLR camera so the quality of the camera phone was a small consideration at the time, but if I were buying today I'd give the new Nokias serious consideration (they're sexy). Last time I checked out a Nokia, the bulky/plastic feel turned me off. Hopefully the newer models are much improved.
Win 8 considerations
Music - I played around with music features a month or two ago.
- Sync absolutely sucks in every imaginable way. If you want to upload/delete/manage your own music files, have fun. Wireless is not an option; MS will absolutely eff-up the metadata; Win Phone 8 and Windows 8 PC blow as far as ecosystems go (and ecosystem is basically non-existent with Windows 7 PCs). The final poke in the eye was that I could not delete the files with bad metadata, no matter what I tried. I'm not the kind of person that wants unwanted files hanging around, so I scratched and reloaded the phone.
- Streaming kind of sucks too. *Disclaimer - I only experimented with the near-native Xbox music option; Spotify is on my rainy day list. I can't remember all the fine points of my tribulations, but in a nutshell XBox music architecture on the Windows 8 phone seems to have been inspired by the venerable child's toybox. Managing playlists was difficult if not impossible. Where local storage was limited, I envisioned maintaining many playlists on the XBox mothership and moving them on and off the phone as dictated by whimsy. Bad idea. ... Rather than me rant, I'm sure you can find plenty-better hits on google using Windows 8 phone xbox music rant.
Backup is pretty weak. Backup and restore are easy tasks to execute, but for some reason things you would expect to be backed up are not - like that oh so perfect customized tile layout. Applications - all that is backed up is a
list of installed apps. You have to download all the apps again and go through each to authenticate (which may be standard practice, I don't know) and customize them all again. Also, when re-installing apps, the latest version is your only option (again, maybe this is standard in the mobile world).
Microsoft User ID - You don't have to have one, but it's best you get one. Of course you will need it for XBox features, and Outlook.com and SkyDrive. That reminds me, SkyDrive is your one and only backup choice. C:\ is not an option.
Sidebar - I got so sick and tired of the Gmail/Chrome interface, I switched the bulk of my email over to outlook.com and I like it. Still, my email requirements are lightweight, so YMMV.
All this negativity aside, I really like the phone, both the device and the O/S. Virtually all of my complaints revolve around file management 101. I've got to believe these can be easily resolved over time. Unfortunately I think people like me will have to take one for the team while the emphasis is tapping new arrivals to the smartphone market.
Apps - Yep, definite sore spot, but if MS can build market share I think developers will arrive in droves to dine on the fresh meat.
