Windows 8 vs. iPhone vs. Android - Battle of the Phones (1 Viewer)

I'm a big fan of the Google Nexus line. I currently have the Galaxy Nexus, and will probably upgrade every other generation. You get the updates straight from Google so you're always up to date on the latest Android OS. Plus I'm on the T-Mobile no contract $30/month plan which gives you 5gb data / Unlimited text / 100 min. After you use the minutes it's $0.10/minute. If you don't talk on the phone much it's an amazing plan. They also have a $70/month 5gb data / Unlimited text / Unlimited talk; which is only worth it if you talk more than 500 minutes per month. With the $30 plan plus cost of cell phone spread out over 24 months (your typical contract) I'm paying $45.58/month. You can't beat that and I've found T-Mobile service to be great in NYC.

I'm committed now. Going to give a S4 a run. It was a great run iphone wish you all the best. The jailbreak community was great, but it's time to move on.
I'm glad to hear this and hope you can give us your feelings after you've had it a while. I'm allowed an upgrade from my iphone 4 this month, but will probably keep it rather than upgrade to the 5 and lose my unlimited data plan. But I've been tempted by the S4 bigtime and have been thinking I might pass my phone down to my daughter and switch over.

Anyway, I've noticed we're usually on the same page when it comes to these things (whether it's regarding the iphone in general, jailbreaking, the HP Touchpad, etc), so I respect your opinion and look forward to hearing what you think.

btw, CM10 on the touchpad is one of the things making me think I should switch over. I'm really enjoying the android OS on that thing. Still using yours much?
Yeah, will do. I may root the thing right away if the touchwiz thing is a pita.

That's funny you mention touchpad. I had mine on the prior version ICS, but wiped it and put on JB this weekend so I'd have both devices on the same platform. I don't know if that was absolutely required or not, but it was easy enough. I still use it some, but it's most heavy use is as a media player for trips and the occasional couch surfing.

Which nexus do you have? The galaxy s or the 4?
I have the Galaxy S. It went a little wonky for a short period with charging and having to remove the battery to fix, but an update from Google fixed it after a couple weeks. The only thing that I wish the Nexus line had was a memory card slot. The Nexus 4 has a much better camera than the Galaxy S.

My 87yr old grandfather, of all people, jumped into the smartphone arena with the Nokia 910. I haven't played with a Windows8 phone before and got to mess around with it yesterday. I gotta say, I'm pretty impressed with it. The Nokia was really heavy compared to my iPhone5. Felt like I was holding a brick.

The size is the tradeoff for wireless charging.

It is heavy but I've been working out so I can manage.

My buddy just showed me the S4. I was reading an email and when I got to the last line, it automatically scrolled down for me based on my eyes

:mindblown:

The Apple stuff today did not impress me to the point that I am sticking with Apple. No new phone news, no phablet in the future news, just, here, look what we did. Not good enough.

When the S5 comes out, it will automatically download porn when it sees you're alone.

Seriously though, that's pretty awesome.

My mom of all people got one of these for free with a new contract (old one was up). She broke it in one day - dropped it from hip height (~3ft) landed flat, somehow completely destroyed the speaker of all things.I have an S4 and I have to say its the best phone I've ever messed with.

It is interesting that they cant make a push for this year. They have to know that people are starting to lose interest. I cant even explain why I am losing interest. It does everything I need it to. I have the 4 and really wanted to give my phone to my daughter as an ipod touch. But I am not upgrading to a 5s with newer models coming next year. I just hope my 4 lasts that long. Its starting to break down a bit.

I currently have an iPhone 4. Have been contemplating moving to a Samsung Galaxy 4. But, Nokia has come out with a couple sleek Windows 8 phones.

I will probably wait till near the end of summer to make a decision. The fact Apple has not made their phone comparable to others is moving me away from iOS, in my mind. But, do I go Windows or Android?

I bought a Windows 8 tablet and find myself liking it more than my iPad. It is more of a tool than a "gaming" tablet and maybe in my work life/life, I am more in tune with a tool rather than games. I really like the fact you can do much more with the Windows 8 tablet than you can with an iPad (at least where I am).

I'm curious to hear from any Windows 8 phone users as well as Androids. My home computer is a MacBook Pro (Apple) and I don't anticipate me giving my computer up. My tablet usage is moving towards Windows. Not sure if I should make a phone switch or not. The only other drawback is my phone bill could jump from ~$75 a month to ~$90 a month. It would take me some time to get used to the new phone and its capabilities to make up that money a month but that is a "normal" learning curve.
I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I strongly recommend going with a Nexus 4 unlocked and then a prepaid plan. I love the N4, great Android phone. Its also very affordable unlocked (either $299 or $349). With an unlocked phone you can go to a prepaid carrier and I'm certain we can get your bill significantly down from $75 a month to something much lower. If you go to this thread and post your zipcode, and usage for mins/texts/data, I can find you a plan that fits you well and saves you money: http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=677314&hl=

I built a database of every plan in the US, and I've been helping several FBGs out in that thread.

The phone looks pretty good with some great specs. But, the biggest spec of all is the $300 for it. I cannot justify that price for a phone at this time. If it was $200, I'd be there. At least with the price, it gives me time to have people buy it, test it, and rate it. It also allows me to go into the store to test it myself rather than knowing I am going to buy. Darn, I was hoping for something a little different.

Really tempted by the Nokia 1020 but I'm waiting for the Apple event to see if iOS7 excites me enough to stay
I am tempted as well. The price of the phone is keeping me from buying though... for now.
I was disappointed with the price but the 32g is the same as the 32g 1020. Some apps are missing that I use but all but 1 of my go-to apps are there.

I'm curious how the browsing experience compares to the iPhone

I loved my 900 so much I'm upgrading to the 1020 if they'll cut me a deal (1 yr left in contract). The phone is amazing. Real happy with the Carl Zeiss camera but can only imagine at those levels. I rarely take my SLR out with the Nokia and doubt I'd ever need it with 43 megapixels.

I meessed around with the 1020 at the MS store & will probably buy one unless iOS 7 knocks my socks off. Both hardware & OS felt real solid . The camera what little I played with it was drool worthy for a camera :nerd: . The had a small globe on the table that I snapped. Zooming in after the pic looked like it was with a macro lens.

Good to know.vTweetbot is from a mac/ios developer so I doubt They'll make a wp8 version. Not sure about Pocket but there are numerous 3rd party clients available soI'd be good to go there.Do you have a WP8?

How does Microsoft handle updates , more like iOS or Android?
More like Android. The manufacturers and carriers get in the middle.

There's also the issue of all the Windows 7 phones not having an upgrade path to Windows 8. Microsoft was relatively up front about it but I'd be more concerned about going forward it I was spending big bucks on a 1020 than a 500 class Lumia.

As we’ve said, one benefit of moving to the Windows core is that Windows Phone 8 is upgradeable.

I'm just posting what they tweeted. I'm not sure they have a bad track record on saying something is upgradable and then retracting that.

WP7 was never going to upgrade to WP8.

Carrier/manufacturer support of WP 7.8 was pretty lukewarm. Microsoft issued a generic update but the bug reports on the :nerd: boards discouraged me from trying it on my wife's phone.

that's a good point, I didn't think of that. I used a hack to upgrade my Samsung Focus 2 to 7.8.

So are you guys running 8? In the 10 minutes I played with it I was impressed. Really liked the tiles
No. I'd like to but my work apps are iOS. I ran WP7 for about six months after initial release. I liked the UI a lot but AT&T coverage in my area was terrible plus the aforementioned apps issue. I think it's better now although there are still gaps in the portfolio.

I bought my wife a cheap used WP7.5 phone as a replacement. It's good for what she uses but she's not a power user.

yes I am.
same here...won't go back to iOS
As soon as my contract is up, I'm looking to move towards another mobile platform from Android. Can you guys who are WinPhone tell me more about it? I love that new Nokia device.
HTC 8X owner - Was the only Win device available at the time I bought from Verizon. It's fantastic as far a look/feel goes, which is very important to me. I've got a super nice Canon DSLR camera so the quality of the camera phone was a small consideration at the time, but if I were buying today I'd give the new Nokias serious consideration (they're sexy). Last time I checked out a Nokia, the bulky/plastic feel turned me off. Hopefully the newer models are much improved.

Win 8 considerations

Music - I played around with music features a month or two ago.

  • Sync absolutely sucks in every imaginable way. If you want to upload/delete/manage your own music files, have fun. Wireless is not an option; MS will absolutely eff-up the metadata; Win Phone 8 and Windows 8 PC blow as far as ecosystems go (and ecosystem is basically non-existent with Windows 7 PCs). The final poke in the eye was that I could not delete the files with bad metadata, no matter what I tried. I'm not the kind of person that wants unwanted files hanging around, so I scratched and reloaded the phone.
  • Streaming kind of sucks too. *Disclaimer - I only experimented with the near-native Xbox music option; Spotify is on my rainy day list. I can't remember all the fine points of my tribulations, but in a nutshell XBox music architecture on the Windows 8 phone seems to have been inspired by the venerable child's toybox. Managing playlists was difficult if not impossible. Where local storage was limited, I envisioned maintaining many playlists on the XBox mothership and moving them on and off the phone as dictated by whimsy. Bad idea. ... Rather than me rant, I'm sure you can find plenty-better hits on google using Windows 8 phone xbox music rant.
Backup is pretty weak. Backup and restore are easy tasks to execute, but for some reason things you would expect to be backed up are not - like that oh so perfect customized tile layout. Applications - all that is backed up is a list of installed apps. You have to download all the apps again and go through each to authenticate (which may be standard practice, I don't know) and customize them all again. Also, when re-installing apps, the latest version is your only option (again, maybe this is standard in the mobile world).

Microsoft User ID - You don't have to have one, but it's best you get one. Of course you will need it for XBox features, and Outlook.com and SkyDrive. That reminds me, SkyDrive is your one and only backup choice. C:\ is not an option. Sidebar - I got so sick and tired of the Gmail/Chrome interface, I switched the bulk of my email over to outlook.com and I like it. Still, my email requirements are lightweight, so YMMV.

All this negativity aside, I really like the phone, both the device and the O/S. Virtually all of my complaints revolve around file management 101. I've got to believe these can be easily resolved over time. Unfortunately I think people like me will have to take one for the team while the emphasis is tapping new arrivals to the smartphone market.

Apps - Yep, definite sore spot, but if MS can build market share I think developers will arrive in droves to dine on the fresh meat.

Just a heads up that some microsoft stores are offering the Nokia 1020 free on contract until Nov 3. Was going to get one over the weekend but ended up staying with apple & the 5s.

Mostly off topic, but it's just come to my attention that if you're trying to use Square Register on any tablet that's not Apple, you might be SOL.

I've been using Square for a year on my junky Android phone (Pantech) just fine. I go to start using it with a Galaxy mini-Tab. Reader kept saying disconnected.

It never occurred to me that some devices wouldn't be supported, but sure enough, Square isn't compatible with any 10" Androids. It's compatible all 7" Androids, except, of course, the verizon version the Galaxy 2.

Windows, Nexus, Nook, and Kindle also aren't supported, btw.

Anyway, does anyone know if this is the sort of stupid thing that they'll get worked out anytime soon?

Haven't gone to look at it because of the temptation. Plus, they're only at AT&T stores, not best buy or anything. Might stick with Apple if they are truly looking at bigger phones. That is the only way.
