From Cardinals insiders on Sports Talk Radio...

Cardinals feel there is a huge drop after the top 4(Johnson, AD, Branch, Thomas)

Seriously looking into trading up for Thomas, but looks expensive to do so

Would trade down since they feel 5-12 is the same caliber of player(If top 4 not available at #5.)

For their needs, they're probably right.
Seriously looking into trading up for Thomas, but looks expensive to do so
But what's the cost of NOT doing so?
Would trade down since they feel 5-12 is the same caliber of player(If top 4 not available at #5.)
That means that there are several spots on your team that need attention. Not good.

This makes since but I do not think the Cards are going to have much luck trading up because all the teams above them have similar holes to fill. 1.01 Oakland Raiders.1.02 Detroit Lions.1.03 Cleveland Browns.1.04 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Cardinals feel there is a huge drop after the top 4(Johnson, AD, Branch, Thomas) Most teams probably agree. QBs are overhyped this year.Seriously looking into trading up for Thomas, but looks expensive to do so. It would behoove them to do so at any and all costs to get Joe Thomas.

Would trade down since they feel 5-12 is the same caliber of player(If top 4 not available at #5.) Some sucker will draft a QB top 4 and make it possible for the Cards to stay at #5 and get a play they desire.

What would be really interesting is if both Russell and Quinn are on the board at Arizona's pick.

Now you've got Minnesota, Houston, and Miami all looking at each other wondering if each wants a QB.

right, even the "nightmare" scenario of their top 4 going before they pick could become a nice situation for the Cards - if there's more than 1 suitor for the #5, probably teams that have fallen in love with one of the QBs, then the Cards could try to do a mini-Chargers kind of deal where they gather up some more 07 picks (maybe a first day pick in there) and an 08 first of a team that is likely to pick in the top half of the first (after all, they just spent their first round pick on a developing QB).Although I'm thinking its just as likely that they would all stay put, because of the level quality of that 5-12 tier. I mean if you're Miami and you miss out on Russell/Quinn, that means you're getting someone like Levi Brown or Darrelle Revis or Patrick Willis or your pick of the 2nd tier WRs, and so on, not exactly rubbish.

At this point, I would be surprised if no QB went top-4. That said, it may well happen if Oakland takes Calvin.

In Andy's scenario, I think Minnesota would select Russell and Miami would give consideration to QUinn.

Houston's QB stinks, but they have plenty of other problems. I imagine they would LOVE Branch.

Thanks for the news, LHUCKS.

If Branch is indeed in their top 4, I think it's likely that he becomes a Cardinal.

 No.....not Branch!!

I guess the Skins will end up with Adams or Anderson then, which isn't necessarily a bad problem to have. I was hoping Branch may be who the Skins want to target to protect McIntosh, Fletcher, and Washington.

I don't know about Russell to Minnesota. He seems to be nearly the same guy as Tarvaris Jackson. A little bigger maybe. I like Branch going to Houston, but I can't believe their starting QB is going to be Sage Rosenfels? :mellow:If Quinn is available to the Dolphins, I have to think that's a lock.

I see it the other way. Minny = Quinn, Miami = Russell.Russell doesn't come off as a smart enough guy to run Childress' O, where as I think Quinn is a great fit for it. Likewise, Miami needs a QB who can stay on his feet and have a big arm to get Chambers the ball, Russell.

I don't know...OL is such a huge need they may bite the bullet for Thomas, which is what I'm hoping that they do.
They need to protect their franchise QB, and what better way than to get Thomas. The problem I see here is that Detroit also needs Thomas so they may have to trade up to #1 to make it happen.

In terms of a trade up, you mean?
yes, although it would be very unusual for the Cards to do so.
I just hope they don't reach on Levi there.

I'm not opposed to trading up to #1 for Thomas.

That would be the classic Cardinal move(pre-Denny), I think they get Branch here though.

It was always unusual with Denny Green to trade up, but now he's gone. I heard the last part of him left the building just the other day.

As a Raider fan, if they aren't convinces Russell is their guy, I wish they would drop down in the draft and get extra picks, the number five spot is still high enough to get a good player. And Pullo, shame on you.

Well, the Cards rarely trade up, and the Raiders never trade down, so maybe this'll be the year. if they could still get their guy at QB, this could be a win/win.Not likely, unforunately, but that'd be sweet.

FWIW, the top 10 rankings from the guy who consistently has the most accurate mock draft every year:

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...10.2b7711e.html

Rick Gosselin ranks the top 10 players on the draft board coming out of the scouting combine:

1. Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech

The Biletnikoff Award winner has the size of Terrell Owens (6-5, 239) and the speed of Randy Moss (4.35 seconds in the 40). But a wide receiver hasn't gone first overall since Keyshawn Johnson in 1996.

2. Adrian Peterson, HB, Oklahoma

Peterson rushed for 100 yards in his college debut in 2004 and went on to set a school record with 23 career 100-yard games. A broken collarbone cost him his shot at a Heisman Trophy in 2006, but it won't keep him out of the top five in this draft.

3. JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU

Vince Young was a giant coming out of college in 2006 at 6-4, 233. Russell is even bigger at 6-5, 265 and has one of the best arms to come along in decades.

4. Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin

He's 6-6 and 311 pounds, runs a 4.82 40 and has an Outland Trophy. What's not to like about Thomas? If he came out in 2006, he might have been a top-10 pick. By staying in school, it appears he has locked himself into the top five.

5. Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson

When you look at Adams, think Jevon Kearse – all arms, legs and speed. He's almost 6-5, 260 and runs in the 4.6s. He posted 121/2 sacks and was the school's first consensus All-American since 1982.

6. LaRon Landry, S, LSU

Safety Dawan Landry was underdrafted last year, going to the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round. He started as a rookie and was fourth in tackles on the NFL's top-rated defense. His little brother LaRon won't be underdrafted – not after running a 4.32 40 at the combine.

7. Alan Branch, DT, Michigan

Defensive tackles are always at a premium because the good ones never sneak out into free agency. So you have to draft them. But here's the question on Branch – when's the last time Michigan produced a quality defensive tackle? The Wolverines haven't had a DT drafted on the first day since Mike Hammerstein went in the third round in 1986.

8. Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame

Quinn started 46 games at Notre Dame and ranks in the Division I-A's top 10 all time in yards and TD passes. He benefited immensely from having spent his last two years playing in the pro system of former New England Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis.

9. Levi Brown, OT, Penn State

Like Thomas, what's not to like about Brown? He was a four-year starter at left tackle and leaves Penn State with two degrees (labor relations and psychology). Brown has been All-Big Ten each of the last two years and was team captain as a senior. Did I mention he also has NFL size (6-5, 324)?

10. Dwayne Jarrett, WR, Southern California

Is he Mike Williams? This is where Williams, his predecessor as Southern Cal's go-to guy, went in the 2005 draft – 10th overall to Detroit. Williams was a big-play, no-speed receiver. Jarrett set a Pac-10 record with his 41 career touchdown receptions, but his flaw also is a lack of speed.

If their top 4 is gone they should trade down and get maybe Landry. A combo of Wilson & Landry at Safety would easily be the best in the league.
