I've had way too many dumb mistake lately. Should have had this in three, but wasn't paying attention and jumped the gun.

Again, hard mode really should have stopped you from guessing "tooth." This particular feature has officially reached "pet peeve" territory for me. The whole point of hard mode, as I see it, is to force you to make guesses that might be the actual solution, and "tooth" got ruled out by "atone." Given that many of us do this little puzzle as a wake-up exercise first thing in the morning, I want that guardrail! Dammit, NYT, get it together.
 
A bit tricky today. I had "unmet" in my hip pocket after two guesses, but it felt uninspired. After a few minutes of not coming up with anything else, I played it and it worked out.

I gave up after four guesses today because I just couldn't come up with a guess (WRIST-PLANT-COMET-BEGET). After looking up the solution, that word just isn't in vocabulary aside from the Fight Club reference, and I never would have gotten it ever. Oh well.

ETA: The strategy that Ivan shared of using X’s for unknown letters helped out a lot on this one for me. I was pretty sure the second letter was an “I,” but being able to visualize with it turned me toward the “U.”

that took forever with my letters left and knowing where the e was made my head hurt. had dupet, dubet; or dudet counted against me I would have been done. I tried a lot of words with 2 e’s as well :wall: I like these that mess with my head
