Ministry of Pain

I don't know how to explain all this from my POV or current lens. Maybe I could just share some facts and go from there.

-5 Years ago we were moved from Miami to NPB/Jupiter area, 80 Miles North not that big of a move but a 180 from Miami and we kind of love it here like so many others who live in the area. Los/Ang/Santa Monica from '00-'08, Miami thru '15 then here.

-On the Friday before Thanksgiving, the President of the Foundation who hand picked my wife and brought us here, that lady was walked to the door and her security badge taken. 😢.  This woman has exceeded the fundraising goals of this non profit hospital by about double almost every year she has been here and she put together the current fundraising team. This was all put in motion by a new Hospital CEO who in less than 12 months re-wrote all the Foundation laws and such so that he could gain control of all the money they raised the last 4-5 years and the Board allowed him to do it...

I am giving the cliff notes version because the day to day is filled with a lot of mysogyny that I believed had been erased from Corporate America or high level execs but nothing could be further from the truth. They were jealous that my wife's boss had created so many friendships and big donor relationships and the men(C-Suite Execs) weren't getting enough credit and so they decide to "Force-Resign" her because then this CEO JERK has his first meeting later that day and announces to my wife and the remaining staff that her boss "Resigned" and that's a total lie, she was fired and only resigned so she can get a severance.

Long story short, my wife cannot stay there and work alongside the man who worked endlessly over the last 12 months to get rid of the person who hired her, this guy doesn't know her at all and he's a snake. Now her former boss tells her she is going to land somewhere big and then hire her HOWEVER they are making her sign a 24 month agreement that she will not go and hire any of the staff away to wherever she ends up, that's how scared these men are of this woman.

-My wife and I are actively taking calls and interviews, there is one already that has made it crystal clear they would like to have us but we really didn't want to leave Florida. In the coming weeks I will share more about where this terrific opportunity awaits, I can deal RE/Insurance almost anywhere, just have to get licensed, not that big of a deal.

I wish we didn't have to do this, pick up and leave a place that I enjoy but we do have RE down here and we are not going to sell, if anything we will rent it until we return.

I also understand many folks have it far worse off, I don't want any sympathy. I'm more interested in hearing what other people are going to do.  Deal with the reality that the job market is forever changing and it might completely make certain jobs obsolete? I think folks should keep a very open mind right now about how they are going to support themselves and family as we move forward.

Maybe there's a thread just on jobs and work place thru the pandemic but I find things getting worse and worse despite the stock market surging, very bizarre from the ground level.

What scares me is that all we really desire is a safe port for the next couple years while things cool down with the pandemic and getting the vaccine...is just trying to find a safe port a little short sighted? Are we not thinking long term enough?

Before you ask, we work in nonprofit and it's limited how many of those are in every city plus we like to travel and this has allowed us to live on both coasts over the last 2 decades...again no crying for us, we've had it good.

-Also wanted to add that the Pandemic plays a role in this...where we live we can operate as long as wear a mask indoors, Florida is not in a lockdown state at all. I am a little scared that we could end up where the local government is far stricter than where we are.

How are people working in my former home town of Los Angeles or anywhere in that county?

Are people walking around in Santa Monica along 3rd Street? I doubt it looking at headlines. How are people able to put food on the table out there, right now?

This doesn't sound like a "pandemic" thing.  The way I'm reading this story, your wife's boss lost a corporate power struggle, and the victor decided to clean house.  The good news is that she's got a good track record and her skills are in demand.  (There is always a strong market out there for people who can raise money -- hats off to Mrs. MOP).  The bad news is that the market for high-level development officers is a national market, she's probably going to have to move to keep her career on track, and you're along for the ride as the so-called "trailing spouse."  That's just sort of how the labor market works when you're in that type of field.

I'm sorry to hear that you two are going through this, but it sounds like you're both very well-positioned to land on your feet. And the US is a big country with lots of great places to live.  You'll be fine, GB.

I'll keep you in my thoughts this weekend, especially while the Dolphins are getting drilled on Sunday.  ;)

Great observations and I did a lousy job of CV-19 relevance BUT...they stopped going into the office daily and once the team was on 1-2 days a week in office and the rest at home over the last 6-8 months it's destroyed the environment and made it much easier for the other guy to win the power struggle.

And local laws and government do impact where we might want to go. We looked at a couple California positions but I just wouldn't feel comfortable under their current status.

@IvanKaramazov wanted to add you really nailed this part of it(bolded), hard to sometimes explain this but you get it.

Austin has been the trend as of late and while there is no ocean, tons of beautiful lakes and property alongside.  Good balance of CA and FL.

👍

Both Austin and San Antonio have some great Foundations.  We looked at Corpus Christ, was not our cup of tea back in June/July...but I gotta be honest, part of me wishes we had taken a stronger look at that opportunity right about now...and that's part of why I am doing this. If something comes up and it might not be the dreamiest of jobs but you know it's going to be a safe place to hangout while things get back to normal, I would seriously consider those options before the choice is taken away from you.

Yeah, I'm a Houston guy but frequent Austin quite often.  I love the two cities (except from June-September).  Corpus and Dallas not so much.  SA is cheaper option but good value - only an hour from Austin and close to the honey hole of Texas (Hill Country).  Lots of cool little towns like New Braunfels, Gruene, Wimberley etc a short drive.  San Marcos is another option and one of the fastest growing 'cities' in the US.   Big college town, located between Austin and SA.

My son lived in San Angelo for a few years thru high school prior to him returning to Florida and I had to drive from Austin to San Angelo or what i found to be "Hill Country" and it was truly pretty along the way. We stopped at Cooper's the Original along the way in the middle of nowhere, delicious and lots of pictures of us waiting in line, great experience.

There's a neighboring state along the Texas border that we are taking a long look at, know more in a couple weeks, Holidays slows everything down.

New York City: I see where there is a possible conversion of Manhattan offices into apartments?

Something like 10% of workers have returned and that's all? That is definitely pandemic related I would think.

As long as it doesn't start with an O, you're in good shape ;)

Have nothing to add other than good luck with your endeavors.

My wife is going through something similar - up until 30 days ago she had a great job with great benefits and great pay - she's been there 20 years and worked herself up the ladder.

New CEO comes in and the first order of business to basically let everyone in her department go - except her and a couple others. New CEO is basically a shill for the board of directors - they fired a whole bunch of higher level VP's and brought in their own people.

She remains because she knows EVERYTHING about how her company operates. But the writing is on the wall. Not sure what our future holds but I believe its going to be a rocky ride in our house for the next 12 months.

Very similar walks of life it seems. My wife runs all the Raiser's Edge software, they didn't even have a place on their website set up for donations until she arrived, now folks can give 24/7 from home if they want. It's ridiculous how badly things are run in these nonprofits depending on the organization. Good in one sense, you can look like an all star with very little effort.

My wife says the office is now like a morgue since her Boss left. How am I supposed to enjoy Troy and Joe on Thursday Nights when she comes home upset from work during the day? I can't live life like this for long.

Yep, this sounds really familiar. We are very fortunate she still has a job for now - so many of her close friends and colleagues are gone - just like that.  Been a brutal month at her company.

We were potentially planning a move up north to Minnesota or Wisconsin, since she can work from home full time. So those plans are out the window for now unless she finds a company with that type of flexibility. But man, the stars were so aligned for us....

Then - BAM. But, we'll survive. She may get lucky and be able to stay there, but her mentality is similar to your wife's - she really doesn't want to work for this new CEO.

Sorry to derail  - Kansas City is a nice town!

Your wife could work for the Kauffman Foundation.
2nd Zoom next Wed, she's already met the direct hire, this feels more like she is being introduced to the rest of the team(IT) but we will see what happens. Surprised how quick they are moving. Dinner/Happy Hour was quite a conversation tonight...surreal.

Good luck. She's doing the right thing. In the Great Recession, I learned the hard way about what happens when the people who promoted/championed you leave and new people who don't care about you take over.

I'm in the market for a new job/career. Looking thru the usual suspects(Linkedin, Indeed, etc.). Once social medias algorithms find this out, my feeds are FLOODED with scam job posts. I decided to do some surface level research on them, and have found 100% are scams. Not one legit post in 50.

Oh, and AI has come to dominate the job search industry.

We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto.

Can you explain what you mean by this?

Advertisements for AI to help with resume creation, job searches, to apply for jobs you give criteria/parameters for, etc. I've even seen AI offer to have a window open on your computer/phone and offer answers to questions live while the interview is taking place(if a phone/online interview).

That just sounds like targeted advertising by companies offering services based on AI tech. It doesn't sound like AI has actually become an industry standard in job searches.
