World of Warcraft (1 Viewer)

I bought this for my 10-year old yesterday and I was watching the chat while he was playing. They had a bunch of people slinging insults (including profanity even though I had clicked on the language filter), some girl named "naughtygirl" looking for people to "make out" with and someone tried to duel with him and when he wouldn't they called him names. What are the tips/tricks for making this more of a PG experience?

don't let your 10-year old play this game.HTH

Yeah there is just too much content you can't control in this game (which is why it is so great) for a 10 y/o. Maybe start him off on some of the older Warcraft titles and when he gets a couple years older he can get into this or another MMORPG.

I would clarify that by saying: Don't let your 10-year old play this game "alone". My 10-year old daughter plays from time to time, but I have two accounts and two computers, so whenever she plays I'm right there with her. I've also disabled all her "public" chat channels, so she basically can't see any chat from someone she isn't grouped with or someone who doesn't send her direct tells. With the language filter on it helps as well in case someone does send her a tell with profanity in it. It does a pretty good job of making it as close to a "single player" experience for her as possible. But I realize this isn't a possibility for everyone, and it does still have it's flaws. Someone once did start badgering her with tells, but I was right there with her and I sent the guy a few tells of my own, informing him that he was harrassing a 10-year old, I was her father, and if he didn't stop sending her tells I would make sure Blizzard CS knew about it. The tells stopped instantly. All that said - yeah - I wouldn't allow my 10-year old to play this game alone or unsupervised.

Ouch.
Well if PCI is the way he rolls, he COULD get a FX5500 for a song and play WoW with that.
Would this let me play relatively smoothly?I wouldn't mind spending more for a better card... what is the best I can do with a 1.5 P4 with 512 RAM?

Or is it time to put this baby out of its misery?
As I understand it, WoW doesn't have much in the way of hardware "requirements" to play. A FX5500 would be considered pretty good by their requirements, but having never played the game I couldn't say for sure. I'm sure you'll be able to play, but you may have a tough time in towns with lots of toons standing around dragging your FPS to virtually 0.

If you think it's easy now, wait until you hit 20. They recently changed the exp rates to level from 20 to 60 in order to make that faster. It's nice if your just trying to level up an alt, but if it's your first experience with the game you will feel a little "rushed" through the game. You basically can't "finish" an area like you used to be able to. You'll out-level the quests and they won't be worth your time or effort any more. You'll also find you skip entire areas that used to be necessary just because you'll level so fast.It seems like Blizzard is all but abandoning the "Old" content and encouraging people to hit level 60 and go play in the Outlands. Once you get to 60 the leveling will slow down considerably and you'll long for the easy leveling again.Of course all of this is in preparation for the release of Wrath of the Lich King - the next expansion. That'll raise the level cap to 80 and introduce the new Hero Class - Death Knights.

Finally got talked into playing WoW. I signed up for a free 10 day trial and bought a 60 day game card since I was told I didn't need to buy the game (downloaded it). Now before I can put in the game card number it's asking me for the authorization key for the actual game, but it says I can use a friend's. Can someone help me out here?

Everyone that buys a box gets a few 10-day free "guest passes". I'm guessing that's what is being referred to here. I'll send you one when I get home from work if you don't get something sooner.

You can but you don't get to keep your character. I just did it to see if I wanted to keep playing. I'm really not that into it but my friend is a level 70 and is going to hook me up with enough stuff to keep it interesting for me. I have a hard time understanding what the big deal is and think Oblivion is much more fun to play.

Hey Rhino, I need to get my soon to be twink 59 rogue a primal nether from Steam Vaults (SV). I have him on a separate account from my 70 lock. Do you think you could help me get a group together to either 4 man reg. SV or 5 man and have 1 person drop off on the last boss? The nether is a 30% drop rate on that final boss (in regular mode, not heroic where it is 100%). These are the goggles I am trying to get for him: Deathblow X11 Goggles.

I'm new to the game, but i have a few friends who are helping me out. If anyone wants to party or raid look me up.

Lioncourt. Level 20 hunter. horde.

Server..... Trollbane

Yeah. I was a little shocked when I hit 60. I think 59-60 is 150,000 xp, or something like that. 60-61 is 470,000 xp, or in that area. Of course, quests in Outlands land you about 10,000 xp each, so that helps. I've gotten my lock up to 65, and finally got my dread steed the other day. Is nice. I likes.

Don't be surprised if WoW starts to steal some of WAR's competitive advantages. I can see this happening as early as the next version in 2.4 when they have (I believe) a PvP land where there will be PvP based quests (kind of how AV works) but with rewards.

WoW's PvP isn't even up to par with DAOC and that was Mythic's baby 6+ years ago. I don't know all of what to expect from Warhammer, but I doubt WoW can compete on a PvP level with a PvP base game. WoW PvP is pretty bad. They would have to invest quite a lot of time and money.

lol Warhammer.

That game has been the "death" of WoW for the last couple years and it is still vaporware.

Two years from now the same Warhammer fanboys will be claiming its dominance when it finally gets to Beta.

Not a problem at all. Put my characters on your friends list and fire me a tell. I've got a good group of real-life friends that play and we run instances three or four times a week. We could probably get you a Nether no problem. Most likely we'd have to run a normal instance - would be tough to take down a heroic boss with only four people.Characters: Buckalter, Renvik, Loderr

cool! I will hit you up this weekend, it would have to be a regular instance since my rogue is not keyed for a heroic at 59 (steam vaults has highest % drop)

No game will be the death of WoW. At least for awhile. There is plenty of added market share to go around.

I'm not sure it's "vaporware" -- they are in beta right now. I'm just not sure it's any good :) And I'll agree with you it won't be the death of WoW. 10 million is a huge number, and well-received MMOs tend to live on into their 10th year and beyond (see UO, EQ).Where I think Warhammer can deliver is in the "war" world PvP aspect, something that WoW touted before release but never quite achieved. I think it can be a successful game, but the only WoW-killer on the horizon is Blizzard's unannounced (diablo? starcraft?) MMO.

This is a lot different than the whole game being built from the ground up w/ PvP in mind, which is what warhammer is shooting for. DAoC, though I didn't play it, apparently did this pretty well.

I was a DAoC addict, loved their PvP setup, it got expensive though in fortifications etc...

I actually have a pretty fair trade for you guys. I ran UBRS last night and the Ace of Beasts dropped. If you have any healers (or even a mage or shaman) in your guild that do not have the Darkmoon Card: Blue Dragon trinket they would love this. Here is the turn in for it:http://thottbot.com/q7907

The card usually sells for between 150-200g (and the deck for between 500-600g) since it is still useful at level 70:

Darkmoon Card: Blue Dragon

Binds when picked up

Unique

Trinket

Requires Level 60

Equip: 2% chance on successful spellcast to allow 100% of your Mana regeneration to continue while casting for 15 sec.

Help my rogue get a Primal Nether and you guys can have it.

That's cool... I wouldn't worry too much. Now if it had been the Ace of Portals I'd take you up on that! I've had pieces of that deck in my bank forever.

You could probably solo that with your 70 lock.from thottbot (pre-TBC comment obviously):

Out of the four aces, this is arguably the best one and hardest to drop.

Ace of warlord = King Gordok = can be 5 manned

Ace of elementals = Major elemental bosses (hydrospawn, etc) = can be 3 manned or even soloed.

Ace of Portal = Darkmaster Gandling = can be 5 manned or easily 10 manned.

Ace of Beast = The beast at UBRS = Will wipe a bad 15 man PUG.

I think that's old info... Not sure you can even 10-man Scholo any more or 15-man UBRS. I think Scholo is restricted to 5-man and UBRS is restricted to 10-man.That said, I do know a couple 'Locks from my old guild that have solo'ed all of Scholo just for fun, but I think they were Demo-spec'ed. I'm Affliction / Destruction. I haven't tried, but I've thought about it. Who knows - maybe I'll give it a go.

Cool - you'll learn about Outlands instances, "Heroics" and Primal's very soon! :lmao: Matter of fact, at 58 you can finally make it to the Outlands. Enjoy!

So a buddy of mine just got super into this game. He's trying to convince me to try it... he seems to be compromising other aspects of his life with the amount of time he's putting into it, but seeing how the housing market is going right now I may have a little time on my hands.Who's playing it out there? I've never been into roll playing games at all but never really tried them either... Do I even dare get myself involved with this???
Don't do it man. It's worse than crack.

Yeah I respec'd my lock to full Demon so that I can solo LBRS (doable, but need to be on your toes - haven't taken down Wyrm solo yet though and after completing the Seal quest don't really need to any more) and attempt to solo UBRS (not doable I don't think). I know a lock pre-TBC that solo'd Ras Frostwhisper in Scholo when he was a 60 (the cap at the time), he just kited her around the balcony and kept the Dots up.

started this game on saturday .

17 lock on queldorei. fun game, but a little too easy. my toon has ZERO gear, i havent read any directions, just runnin around figuring crap out - and ive died like twice. i like all the experience you get from questing though, breaks up the grind.
Just hit 60 yesterday, aiming for 70 within 2 weeks or less.Just want to raid................
You won't be able to raid after hitting 70, you will need to gear up first and get keyedIf you are a tailor this is a good set to make for yourself, takes a lot of time and/or gold though:

OK, here is what I think is a deal for one of you.

I have a 60-day WoW card. I had thought about getting back into it, but LOTRO is picking up again for me, so probably not going to happen. I want to get rid of it and would be willing to sell to one of you for $25. No shipping since I will just send you the code.

If anyone is interested, shoot me a PM. I think this is a bit lower than the going eBay rate last I checked. I know it is around $25.

I wish some FBGs would get on Maelstrom so I could at least PUG with some people I sort of iknow.

:goodposting:

Any of you know much about the Mongoose enchant? Other than it being ridiculously expensive to get the mats for, what weapon should I put it on. I have the Gladiator sword and mace from BGs but didn't know if I should wait for a better weapon to put those on. I'm a L70 ShS rogue...0/20/41 with Hemo.

I was also considering respeccing and getting the two Glad daggers and going into the Assassination tree to get Mut with the balance in Combat and a little Subtelty.

All the DPS from the Glad weapons are the same though so maybe it doesn't matter.

I have 4k in gold so I am almost at my epic mount and then I'll be grinding Netherwing rep to get my drake.

Transfer to Hyjal. I have at least 5 or 6 good real-life friends that play on the server. We'll run you through some instances no problem! Plus, I know Alias plays on Hyjal as well.

In relation to younger kids as referenced above, my son wanted to play Maplestory (which appeared to be mroe for kids):

http://maplestory.com/

And frankly even with a language filter, they are constantly getting around it and frankly, I am pulling ot off the computer and hoping he does not freak out ...

Why an adult would be playing this game I have no idea, but one character was even called "bloodninja" ...

I don't know what "dotting someone up" means.
Certain spells are referred to as a "DoT" - which stands for "Damage Over Time". These are spells you cast on an emeny and they stay on the enemy and do damage to the enemy every few seconds."Stacking DoTs" or "DoT'ing someone up" means putting multiple "DoT" spells on the monster so they are taking lots of periodic damage. Warlocks are the class known most for their DoTs but a lot of the other spell casting classes have at least one or two spells that are DoTs.For the record, there are also spells called "HoTs" - or Heal over Time. Very useful for keeping people healed and not drawing a lot of aggro. Priests and Druids (and maybe Shaman?) have these spells.
