Worst Coach of All Time (1 Viewer)

First, W/L record doesn't quite capture worst coach. If Cam Cameron goes 0-16, he still could be a better coach than Norv. Anyhow, I'll solicit responses. Did searches and didn't find a thread on this subject.

Art Shell, both trips with the Raiduhs. I cannot recall another coach ever sitting on the sideline looking so clueless in all my years.

this time around, I agree whole heartedly, worst season of coaching ever. but the first go-round? worst season of the 5 was 7-9, 54-38, I don't recall him being a bad coach then

Les Steckel

So bad that, after only one season, he forced his predecessor (Bud Grant) out of retirement to save the ship he was responsible for capsizing.

:moron:

Da worst coach evah was when de Bears let that Astronaut Neil Armstrong coach th team back in da seventies.

Edit to add: Rich Kotite is the worst in the modern era, although I remember Marion Campbell being pretty terrible also.

art shell 2.0 (1.0 was serviceable)

you could make the argument that norv turner is one of the worst HC's ever (and one of the better OC's).

running a young, up and coming, 14-2 team into the ground would be no small feat.

brian billick is pretty awful. maybe he's the worst HC to ever win a SB.

In hindsight, you could say Ray Handley of the NYG was setup to fail as the Supe team just vanished with retirement, injuries, free agency but he lost control of the team in preseason and was terrible. He was an older coach and I believe the impending doom is why they wanted a vet to handle it but....geesh that was the worst IMO.I think many miss some of the good young talent when discussing Miami. Cam may lose his job, nothing's secure with that record, but someone's gonna walk in and inherit some good young talent then.

You may have missed the Dave Shula years in Cincinnati.Talk about clueless...Announcers used to wonder if he had music piped into his headphones instead of football communications.

John McKay, mmkay?

0-14 in 1976, 44-88-1 career, started his son who had no business being in the NFL at WR and tried to force the QB to throw to sonny boy on every pass play.

Chris Palmer 5-27

Marty Mohrningweg 5-27

Harvey Johnson was given 2 seperate shots at coaching the Bills...cumulative record was 2-23-1

First name that came to my mind was:Rich Kotite
while Kotite was awful with the Jets he actually made a few playoff appearances if memory serves me correct with the Eagles...Now worst team coaches in the league is the Jets hands down - Lou "ditch the team" Holtz, Charlie "loser" Winner, Joe "pick my nose while team collapses" Walton, Bruce "I love Boomer even if he stinks" Coslet, Pete "rah rah..oh no one listens to me in the pros" Carroll, Al "get me the hell to Virginia" Groh, and Herman "take a knee for a 54 yd FG in the playoffs" Edwards ----ugh!!!!

Tony Dungy. He was a failure at Tampa and lucked into getting P Manning.
Are you insane? This is one of the worst comments I've ever heard of in my life and I've heard of many. He corrected the worst mistake in all of sports in the Buccaneers. This has to be a fishing trip. Yeah that's it.

If you extend this to major college programs, then John Blake is far and away the worst head coach of all time. It's not even close.

Mike Tice has to get a look in this discussion; but the Vikings had a guy back int he 80s, Les Steckel, and he was unbelievably bad. He was one of those former military guys who wanted to run training camp like a drill sergeant, and lost the support and morale of the team and the team leaders. Bad drafting; bad game day decisions; bad leader.

Tice? Not getting the first round pick in??? The scandals: ticket scalping and Love Boat. Randy Ratio??? Trading Moss for a ham sandwich???? Bad game day coach. The word STUPID comes to mind.

A lot of good candidates here. I'll say Steve Spurrier, not for W-L record but because he came into the pros cocky and 100% certain that his college system would work in the NFL, with Danny Woeful at QB no less, and then he flopped so spectacularly it would have been funny if I weren't such a Redskins homer. Everything was so plain and simple for him ("I'm the old ball coach," "we're just gonna pitch the ball around") yet how wrong he was ... he kind of reminds me of our current president.

I like Lou Holtz, but his stint as an NFL head coach was pretty bad. He tried to run an option offense with an elderly Joe Namath. Holtz even admitted that he wasn't ever meant to be an NFL head coach.

Surprised no one has mentioned Dave Shula yet. He took over a once-proud Cincinnati team and pretty much set it back 10 years.
