Worst quarterback of all time (1 Viewer)

Lots of bad quarterbacks and busts have been mentioned here. I'll just throew one more bad one into the pot. How the heck did this guy stick around so long in the NFL? He did finish 2nd in the Heisman Trophy voting and the Browns traded Hall of Famer Paul Warfield to get the #3 overall pick to draft him. And at the time, the Browns were a very good team. They somehow made the playoffs in 1972 with him at qb, and led the 'perfect' Miami Dolphins 14-13 in the playoff game, but Phipps' 5 interceptions were too much to overcome, losing 20-14. In 1977 the Bears traded a # 1 pick to the Browns for him  , which Cleveland used to select Hall of Fame TE Ozzie Newsome.

His bad stats in 12 seasons:

49% completion percentage

55 touchdowns/ 108 interceptions

52.6 career quarterback rating

Wow, that is horrid - I have no idea what the Bears were doing in '77 - he had 0 starts - (they had to know about his '75 campaign with Cleveland when Phipps threw 4 TDs and 19 interceptions over 12 starts....). You may have revealed one of the worst trades of all time as well as one of the worst QBs...

This is type of guy, I think that reflects theme of this thread. Plenty of neverweres could put oup worst pure numbers, but they are only playing because of injury or literally no one else around to take snaps. Guys who the team invests in and contine to start are the worse as they ruin organizations for years after they have left the job.

The reason why my dad moved us from Chicago in '77 becomes clear now. What a Gawd-awful trade! How many terrible players can say they were traded for a Hall of Famer and then traded for a first round pick? I'm glad I was 6 when that deal happened or I might have had an aneurysm.

Another vote for Dave Brown. It seemed as if every interception was run back for a TD. He couldn't throw the long INT but the short dump off INT into the flats - he was the master of that throw.
