Lucky he had all the right tools - as an urchin diver the dude is obviously a strong swimmer and used to being in cold water (at least as much as someone can get used to that). That it happened on a moonless night and he managed to find an oil rig (and that the rig was manned at the time) is pretty darn lucky.
