Talking fotball on the phone with the commish of the league. Told him I have a guy I want to pick up (Donald Brown), he says he is looking at a RB too. He asks who am I thinking of and naturally, I am not a trusting person by nature, I did not say.

He blurts out I am picking up Donald Brown and will be home in 15 minutes to do so.

So I pick up Donald Brown 2 minutes later.

Now he is calling me a thief and because he said the name I could not pick him up. Now mind you most of it is in jest, but he is upset that I would do that.

I said to call the WAAAAAAmbulance.

I leave it to the SP to decide.

I don't care, but since I chimed in all I have to say is, both of you need to grow up.

I hear this all the time, but I don't understand. Why would you tell another owner who you're looking at on the WW? makes no sense

I know full well when discussing player names with other guys in my league that I leave myself open to the possibility that they may acquire that player before me. It goes with the territory. He should have kept his mouth shut.

Sometimes I will throw a player name out there that I have absolutely no interest in just to see if the guy I'm talking to knows his stuff or if he doesn't. Most times they do, but it's funny when they do not. It's a way for me to gauge how much my competition is paying attention.

edit: Whether or not I would do it would depend on the player and if I actually needed him. I wouldn't do it to be a #### though.

Thank you for not caring enough to post, although your post was not very constructive to the discussion. And like I said, the joking around about whining who picked the guy up was mostly for laughs, but he was upset I would pick the guy up. Now the ultimate funny in this will be that Donald Brown gets hurt again and Hart will be the guy for a few weeks.

This happened to me during my draft...with my own freaking brother. I told him I was thinking about Reggie bush in the next round, so he goes and picks Bush before me. It was a #### move, but it's my fault for disclosing my plans. I learned my lesson, that's for sure.

Tough luck, you snooze you lose.

To rub it in, offer him a bad trade for Donald Brown - if he really wants him so bad, ask for an elite WR in exchange or something like that.

LOL

Just another example of why FCFS waivers are a bad format.
in the middle of the week??to OP, just tell him you were thinking Brown too, only he was dumb enough to say it. its so obvious with Addai hurt that Brown would be the hot pick up.

Do guys really call each other to talk about their fantasy football teams?

I've played for 15 years and can't say I've ever had a conversation on the phone with a leaguemate where thats come up.

I hear this all the time, but I don't understand. Why would you tell another owner who you're looking at on the WW? makes no sense
I'm not sure how you do it in your league, but in our league we are all good friends and love to talk about fantasy football. If a friend of mine comes up with a name and tells me, I'm not going to run out and pick him up before my friend can. It is as simple as that. It is an unwritten rule. Why? It is not very sporting now is it. If you could cheat to win fantasy football would you do it? Why if you said yes? Where is the fun when you win while cheating? If we're talking about winning a job, or getting the hot chick, etc., i understand that the reward is there to make you want to cheat. But in fantasy football, cheating devalues the reward into nothing. Anyways, if we didn't abide by the unwritten rule to be sporting, then no one would talk with anyone about anything, and where is the fun in that? Most of the fun in FF is talking to your buddies about strategy, players, etc. If you don't use their info against them, then the more you guys can talk and have a good time.To the original poster, i would ask you: if it was your intention all along that you were going to pick up Donald Brown, then why didn't you say something? He said Brown, you didn't say anything like: "geez, i was thinking about Brown?" You said nothing, instead you quitely got off the phone. slithered over to your computer and stole your friend's player. Pretty shady if you ask me. If you really had Brown on your mind you would have spoken up and said, "hey, i was thinking of Brown too," etc.

While it is as has been said, his fault for discussing players, you did leave yourself open when you could have prevented it and just told him you were picking up Brown so he should think about an alternative - you WERE in front of a computer and knew he wasn't, so there wasn't a problem for YOU to do that

I talk to at least 2 guys pretty consistently throughout the week. I offer opinions on things while being mindful that it may come back to bite me later.

1) it wasn't his friend's player - the guy was in the FA pool (or on waivers) . . .2) there IS a conflict between friends when competing in the same league . . . the friend was silly to talk about a player NOT YET on his team . . . it's cool to talk trash about an upcoming game , that's part of the fun - but the commish was foolish to talk about Brown before acquiring him . . .

so when you play poker with your friends do you talk about your hand before you play it? friendly competition among friends is okay, and making a transaction before revealing your intentions is par of it. You can still have that conversation about FF with your friends but it will more likely start off with "what did you think about my _____ pick up?" or "you ******* i was gonna get that guy" I never reveal my tactics until its played. Then I'll share so they can use it in their other leagues.

In response to this, for the sake of readability I did not include all of this information. After he said Brown, I said that is who I was thinking of and performed the transaction. That is when he got upset and said I should have said the name, and (I agree with Hoss here that this is childish of HIM to argue) he said you can't do that after I say the name first.

I don't care, but since I chimed in all I have to say is, both of you need to grow up.
Your rule is FCFS. So he's your player. While the commish. should not have said a thing, once he did you should have told him of your intention all along to pick up Brown to avoid this mess. Did you tell him you were thinking of picking up another player? If so, I could understand that he would not trust what you did. If you play with a group of friends, act like friends.

Unless the transactions can go through the commish, as it is first come, first served.

Another example would be me calling the commish prior to kickoff and telling him I want X player in my lineup but can't get to a computer in time. So by him telling you what he was doing, it made it legal at that moment (since he's the commish).

why should he tell him if he intended to pick him up all along? so the other guy is tipped off to run to a pc to make the transaction. he kept his poker face, no wrong doing here.

Did you ever think it might be SHADY to "call" out a player as yours instead of getting on the computer like you are supposed to and picking the player up?

Perfect example of this: after acquiring Danario Alexander in the league that I'm in w/ my brother I told my bro to grab Danario in his dynasty league. Sadly, the commish of his dynasty league had just beat him to the punch. So, going forward we have agreed that if one of us has a tip for a pickup we will tell the other on the condition that the person who has the tip gets dibs on that player in the league we both play in.

what if the commish had blurted out that he was going to pick up a different player. would you still have picked up Brown 2 minutes later?

Sounds like someone needs an iPhone.

In all seriousness, if I am 'thinking' of picking up a player, I would not even begin a conversation about player pickup. I would go pickup the player, then said 'hey, did you see who I grabbed.'

If it's a friend, and they just happen to say 'man, I need a TE, I'm going to pickup Pettigrew', I would personally NOT snipe them. If I wanted him, I would have grabbed him. Or I would say, I was just about to get him...and probably we wouldn't spill blood or lose sleep about one or the other of us taking him.

I think you need to maintain relationships in your leagues if they are friendly leagues. I love me some smack talk and beating down my buddies, but the chicken$% stuff I can do without.

If you guys really trust each other for advice, then disclose to each other that i'm thinking of picking up a RB. The other should realize I need to disclose "me too", then you both know not to share names. Not that hard really.

I wouldn't do it.

Instead, I'd execute the transaction while I was on the phone with him then let him know "He's no longer available"

To hell with that 'rule'. We're all friends in my league too and talk football all the time--but sure know better than to show our hands in the middle of a play. Given a league attitude like that I'd be dropping names all over the place to keep everyone on their heels...
To the original poster, i would ask you: if it was your intention all along that you were going to pick up Donald Brown, then why didn't you say something? I do agree with this. Even playing for money at least for friendship--knowing you're about to beat him to the pick--the heads up would have been cool.

Do guys really call each other to talk about their fantasy football teams?I've played for 15 years and can't say I've ever had a conversation on the phone with a leaguemate where thats come up.
I've got a good buddy in Kentucky with whom I probably spend 8 hours a week chatting football. We're in several leagues together, and we'll rehash who we're starting, who we're dropping, trades we're considering, trades we might consider with each other, what teams we think are trending up, what teams we think are trending down, what players are looking better/worse than expected, games we're watching and what we're noticing... we pretty much run the whole gamut.Of course, we also realize that if we tell the other guy about a move we're going to make, we have forfeited all right to ##### if the other guy sharks us on the move. It's not really an issue, though, since we're both pretty opinionated guys so neither of us ever take anyone just because the other guy likes him. If I mentioned I wanted Brown and my buddy grabbed Brown before I could, I'd assume that was just because my buddy wanted Brown on his own before I ever even mentioned the name. Even if he is just being a ##### and sharking me... oh well, it's my own fault for telling him.

Like I say in a lot of these threads, it depends on what kind of league it is. If it's a cutthroat, high stakes league he's a moron for telling you about a move he was planning to do. All is fair in love and war and all that.

On the other hand, if it is supposed to be fun and casual league with friends, you might be 'that guy' that comes to the pick-up flag football game with a custom jersey, $200 cleats and a mouth piece because you're going to "dish out some pain."

I leave it to the SP to decide.
I’m not sure it’s a good idea that the dumbest guy in your league is also the Commissioner. What happens if a real problem ever comes up?

I wouldn't do it. Instead, I'd execute the transaction while I was on the phone with him then let him know "He's no longer available" :lmao:
:thumbup:This sounds like you're playing a friendly game of hold 'em, everyone goes on bathroom break, and your buddy says "I'm gonna 3 bet the suited connectors I just got dealt just to scoop up the blinds".You sit back down and immediately push all in.

wrong on every level. his prior intent is irrelevant. If I know someone's going after a player (and had the room) I'd pick him up and trade him to them. However assuming he was targeting him, it's not incumbent on him to disclose who he is going after. Certainly not punishable by not allowing him to pick up a guy because the other guy expressed his intention first. This ain't shotgun.

This. Pretty much verbatim. My buddies and I talk FF all the time. I assume they've done their homework and agree or disagree with my evaluations and thoughts based on their own research and opinions. If someone picks up a player we've discussed, I assume he picked him up because he wanted him, not because I somehow convinced him.Honestly, if someone is in a league where everyone needs to steal their ideas and strategy to win, they must do well enough in that league not to ever need to complain anyway.
