WR Brandin Cooks, Free Agent (2 Viewers)

I'll take it a step further. Cooks is the type of guy that will get FF managers in a frenzy this time of year. If (when) he breaks a long one in the next two weeks, look out. If that happens, I think he will be taken as high as round 4 in some sharky drafts, depending on scoring and lineups. But the days of getting him in rd 8+ are long gone at this point in competitive leagues.

Excerpt from Peter King's MMQB:

The usual good job has been done by editor Aaron Schatz and his Football Outsiders crew (Mike Tanier, Doug Farrar, Jason Lisk, Christopher Price, Chase Stuart) on Football Outsiders Alamanac 2014. Some prime tidbits:

FO projects college receivers to the NFL with a system called Playmaker Score. In general, the mark of a really good prospect is a Playmaker Score above 80 percent. This year, 13 rookie receivers hit this mark. FOs database goes back to 1996, and there had never been a season with more than eight such players. FO actually projects Brandin Cooks, not Sammy Watkins, as the top prospect among this years wide receivers. (The highest Playmaker Score ever belonged to Randy Moss.)

Do they list the scores for each player?

I wanted to see the full list, figured some else may want to...

ADP is steadily climbing. Up to 7.03 now in 10-team standard mocks on FFC...

Like I've been saying for a while now, if you want this guy in your draft, you better be ready to "reach" for him.
He bloomed too early for redraft. Everybody will know about him (or already does) and he will be every regular fantasy footballers "sleeper" pick and everybody that liked him a couple weeks ago will be left with trying to find another guy instead.

Rotoworld:

According to ESPN Saints reporter Mike Triplett, first-round WR Brandin Cooks "simply makes one or two of the biggest plays on the practice field every day."

Triplett believes Cooks has been worth the hype and then some. No. 2 QB Luke McCown shares Triplett's assessment. "(Cooks is) a special player," McCown said. "I think that's easily recognized for any amount of time you spend watching him. He's a smart, heady player that you only have to teach a certain route or step or technique once. ... The sky's the limit for that kid." Cooks is a WR3 with upside.

Cooks-mania is hotter than tech stocks and tulip bulbs. Went top of the 5th in a FFPC draft yesterday. I thought I reached for him at the bottom of the 8th a few weeks ago. Doubt he'll be on many more of my teams going forward.

Hmmmm I am sweating it a little that he's going to go #1 overall in my rookie draft. I have the 2nd pick and would love to have him for the next 10 years. Jesus plz onetime!

Better hope your draft doesn't follow another big game. At this point, I think one (semi) long TD will do it.

Would you be that upset to get Watkins at 2? I have the second pick in one league, and I am happy with either one. Or, even trading back to 3 and getting Evans if Cooks goes 2. All 3 have the strong potential to be WR1s for the next decade, you just may get a quicker return on Cooks.

It isn't until Saturday. He could make his pick before the games or wait. He said he was taking Watkins 2 months ago but Cooks is just blowing up. I'd probably trade down to 3 if I could and take Evans.

I took him at #37 overall in a dynasty startup only 3 weeks ago but I doubt I could even get him there now.

I'd still take Evans and Watkins over him if I had any rookie drafts left. He's in a great situation but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Those two guys profile as WR1 type of players. Not too many guys Cooks' size can consistently stay with the big guys.

All this hype is starting to make me feel good about a trade I did in one of my PPR dynasty leagues during our rookie draft.

I traded away Evans (took at 1.2) and the 2.5 and 2.7 rookie picks for 1.4 (Cooks) and the 2.1 (Freeman) and 2.2 (Lee)

Between his character, discipline, speed, and landing in the perfect offense, its hard to find any dents in his armor IMO.

agree about his size, but the new illegal contact rules helps guys his size a lot more than the big guys

Where did Watkins/Evans go?
Watkins at 13 (me) and Evans at 25.

Snagged this guy with the 1.02 in my .75ppr dynasty (Rookie Draft)

Went Watkins, Cooks, Sankey, Evans...

I like him a lot but I'm a little concerned about him getting off the jam. I know they will move him around and line him up in the slot so he doesn't have to deal with it as much. It's still a concern for me. Brees would have hit him on that last big play the backup missed Cooks on in the last game. It would have been a 50 yard TD every time with Brees.

Is he being drafted ahead of Colston in redraft PPR now?
I think that would be foolish in redraft leagues - dynasty/keeper clearly is a different story.

In redraft, the more Cooks gets built up, the more Colston becomes a value play IMO.

Took him at 7.1 in a redraft PPR last night. It was him or Benjamin. Not sure if I made the right choice but love both is year.

Who finishes with better stats, Cooks or Colston? This is the actual question IMO. Personally, I think Cooks is going to tear the league up.

Somehow with the hype around him, lasted to 9.3 in a draft I was in last night. I'd have taken him at 8.10 but took Hilton and got him coming back around as my WR4. Pleasantly (to say the least) surprised :o

While Cooks looks like he's got some real game, I think the hype is getting to be a bit out of whack. One needs to consider that he has not yet played a regular season game, and he has to share with Colston, Stills, Toon and some TE named Graham.

As prolific as the Saints' passing game is, there are only so many balls to go around. As with many WRs, I see a handful of big games by Cooks surrounded by many more quiet games as Brees spreads it around.

You act like Colston Stills and Toon are some generational talents or something. Colston is an average player in a good situation, stills just runs go routes, and toon hasn't shown he's anything special. Every team in the league has multiple options to use but talent always wins out.

I don't see Cooks matching Colston this year. He's got the potential to do it if he really is used as some Sproles/DeSean Jackson super-hybrid, but to me that potential doesn't quite merit his crazy-climbing ADP. 60-65 grabs would be an impressive debut in a Saints offense stacked with options.

You act like Cooks is a generational talent. You realize how few rookies have a big impact at WR, right? This situation has disappointment written all over it.

Colston is a bit more than an average talent - he's a proven producer with a QB that loves throwing the ball to him. Not saying Stills and Toon are great, but there are a lot of options there and only one football. Brees is a master at spreading it around when he doesn't go to Graham.

I hope he stays under the radar. They already know what they have in him after the 1st preseason game & what he has shown in camp. No need to reveal anything else until week 1.
