WR Courtland Sutton, DEN (3 Viewers)

I’m surprised his adp is pretty reasonable for redraft. I expected him to have more buzz- but maybe that will come in a month.
Agree in that Sutton really seems to be the clear WR1 -- will remain to be seen how Sanders comes back from an Achilles but he might not be 100% through camp, and how Noah Fant might siphon targets. Not sure DaeSean Hamilton or Tim Patrick are threats to volume though using Lindsay more in the passing game may take away additional volume.

I think around 60/900/5 is a reasonable expectation so could be a solid WR2 with upside candidate if he develops rapport with Flacco -- agree with @TheWinz that Flacco's deep ball is better suited for Sutton as Sutton seems to have speed and can contend for those 50/50 balls downfield.

I think Sutton's perceived value is low because people expected more after Thomas got dealt. I just don't think he was ready to be the #1 and explode last year. I didn't expect him to. He was actually more productive as a rookie than I expected.

I seem to recall quite a few deep ball pass interference penalties that hurt him and a few plays where his foot was just out of bounds after he brought the ball in. Every WR has a play like that here and there, he just seemed more snake-bitten than usual. I'm high on him this year with Flacco or Lock. I think he hits 1K yards but not sure the Denver offense will rack up enough points to get beyond 6-7 TDs.

Agree.  I wanted to give him more when I projected 60/960/7, but I would just be going against my own math.  If his catch % takes a big leap, I think my numbers could be off by a decent margin.

Broncos Journal: Flacco impressed by Sutton’s “feel” for offense

Excerpt:

Receiver Courtland Sutton’s dud of an opening practice feels like a month ago. He has rebounded to be mostly steady. Without Emmanuel Sanders (Achilles tendon) and DaeSean Hamilton (hamstring), Sutton is taking first- and second-team snaps. Quarterback Joe Flacco said that method benefits Sutton. “He’s a guy that learns with a lot of reps and once he gets those reps, he never makes the same mistakes again and he has a really good feel for how to do things,” Flacco said. “That’s really the bottom line with him. You’ve just got to get him out there, get him the reps and let him build his confidence from there.”

Mostly steady sounds lame AF. I'm hoping fora bit more than that. Probably avoiding from here on out. Not because of this language in this blurb, but it doesn't help.

He's a talent for surr but the situation he finds himself in limits his upside imo. The reason I traded out of a lot of drafts last year and didn't draft him.
He has the talent, but I agree - with injuries to the other WRs, he could see a lot more coverage.

that said, I think Flacco won’t hesitate to throw him jump balls. Should see a ton of targets.

When Sanders comes back things should open up a bit for him too.

The only problem is he COULD be a 1,000 yard guy or he could be a 850 yard guy.

Plenty of value if he’s the 1,000 yard guy. JAG if he’s a 850 yard guy.

You have more faith in Flacco then I do. Sutton could be the type of WR that makes it easier for his QB though. So I'm not shutting the door on that possibility.

I have faith that Flacco will be chucking it up a lot & isn’t as timid about throwing into coverage if he thinks his WR can go up & get it:

whether that has good or terrible results may vary.

Redraft projection thoughts for him? #1 guy on his team? I can’t figure out Denver this year.

I can't either -- high on this guy given the talent he's flashing, but with Sanders healthy, I think the two end up with similar statlines (in the neighborhood of 50/800/5) with both of them limiting each others' upside.

Will likely be using him as a matchup-based flex, and between the two of them, definitely prefer Sutton if only because Sanders has been so injury-bitten through his career.

Couple thoughts on this...

one, Achilles is hard to come back from and recover speed - he tore his ~9 months ago. And dude is 32.

I cant see him being the dude to take the top off of the defense any more. Maybe he’s an underneath guy this year? And dude gets hurt a lot.

Second thought is that I think we’ll have to see how defenses respect Sanders. I was kinda happy to see him return so quickly because I have Sutton in a dynasty & was worried about how well he’d do drawing top coverage. If defenses put their #1 on Sanders, that should open things up for Sutton.

finally I think Flacco still has an arm & in his mind every throw is a makable pass. He’s not at all afraid to chuck it up & let his receivers go after it. And sutton has the size to do just that.

It'll be interesting to see how it shakes out and whether or not Flacco has something left in the tank, but I suspect if things break right your #s for Sanders will be close while Sutton enjoys a 68/1000/8 season.

Or Flacco completely craps the bed & they’re both terrible.

everything is still on the table at this point.

;)

Redraft PPR:

At best, an end of bench guy. Not much to like IMO for 2019:

1) Run first team with solid defense

2) "Upgraded" to Joe Flacco (Imagine that being your sales pitch for a player in 2019)

3) Dealing with new QB. Said QB many many many years away from prime.

4) Low catch %. .

5) If Flacco is as bad as he's been the last several years and Broncos aren't in playoff contention, likely looking at another QB by season's end.

6) IMO He's the type of player you can easily find on the waiver wire every week. I don't see big every week/seasonal upside. I'd rather roster a handcuff for RB with some upside.

7) Flacco's Y/A has been just atrocious for years and years. That's suddenly going to change in his mid 30s?? And that's going to benefit a WR like Sutton????

8 ) Lazy Michael Floyd-esque route runner

I don't even see a lot of upside even if Sanders goes down TBH

I liked what I saw in the preseason but it was a super small sample. I think he has a chance to be Denver's #1 this year. I grabbed him in all my redrafts. Could have a 1000-6 type season......

I would be disappointed in only 6 tds. He had 4 last year with only half of a season of starting

Sutton was impressive with 7/120 on 8 targets. Yes, Flacco is terrible, but he looks like a legit #1 NFL WR. His dynasty value is quite high, especially if they can get a competent QB next year

And Drew Lock isn't that QB. Flacco might be gone after this year and then the Drew Lock era begins. Holds Sutton's ceiling down a bit.

Still it was a nice start to the season for Denver's new #1 WR.

Courtland Sutton caught 7-of-8 targets for 120 yards in Week 1 against the Raiders.

Sutton looked like Joe Flacco’s go-to option, out-targeting Emmanuel Sanders (7) and DaeSean Hamilton (4). His big play skills were on full display with Flacco, who hit Sutton on multiple 20-plus yard gains. After a nondescript rookie year, Sutton is set up for a Year 2 breakout. He'll have a tougher test in Week 2 with a matchup against Chicago's secondary.

He's going to have some ups and downs this year as well, but I'd start him with confidence against half the league (Chicago isn't part of that half).

I liked that it didn't look like they were force feeding him.  Just making catches in the flow of the game.

His floor and ceiling keep getting higher.  He looks nothing like the guy that was trotting around out there last year that would just show a flash here or there.

There's a lot of things holding him back from reaching his true potential in Denver, but he's really starting to have the look of that go-to type receiver teams love.

I was watching him very closely (traded woods for him in dyno last year when my team wasn’t destined for the playoffs and got told I overpaid), and came away impressed. Beyond the receiver skills, he took a couple of big hits (esp towards the end of the game when they were in the hurry up) and showed some real toughness bouncing up and getting lined up clearly in some pain.

Sutton isn't a burner, but his good size, strength, & contested catch ability will serve him well on deep balls. And we saw in this game he can get open across the middle & take hard hits. Flacco isn't a top QB, but he's got a plus arm.

Sutton is really developing & I like his energy. This cat gets it.

Rypien is the starter next year.

Got him in the 9th. Started him this week. I'm pleased.  Might bench him against the Bears but I like where this is going.

He was surprisingly cheap in dynasty startup - $22/500

I’m thrilled - he looks so good out there, imagine what he could achieve with a real QB.

Flacco was throwing behind him all night. Almost caused a groin tear on the first errant throw.

Looking forward to a very bright future - I feel like he’s still a sleeper despite what everyone could see on MNF. Dude just looks like the best player on the field at times. Hands, vision, athleticism.

I’m in love & I don’t care who knows it!

(I, too, am likely benching him against the Bears)

Own him and was pleasantly pleased by his usage and production. Hopefully this write up is dead wrong.

Very pleased with game 1. Now I have a quandry for week 2 in my main event. I went big at RB and am super weak at WR. I am thinking of starting MVS vs the Vikes and Metcalf vs the Steelers, both over Sutton vs the Bears. I also have Mike Williams but have not heard a single word about his health other than it was his knee and that he didn't return to the game. I'm coinflipping between Sutton and these guys right now.

Some of that writeup is already dead wrong.

Some valid points about Flacco but Denver had the 11th highest pass % last year. If Sanders went down, the team really only has Daesean Hamilton who has talent but didn't look great last night -- Sutton would rocket in value and usage.

I think jury is still out on Sutton, but I'm enthused. Watching the game -- and solidified by watching the highlights @Faust kindly provided, seemed like Flacco locked on him a lot, and there seemed to be many plays designed to open up space for him over the middle.

We'll see, but optimistically I think he's a credible spot flex, with potential WR2 upside against weak pass Ds.

I grabbed him in the 12th this season and will sit him vs the Bears....but then he goes into the lineup.

Gallup, John Brown and Sutton (Dede Westbrook as well but to a lesser degree in terms of draft slot) were all my biggest slippers at WR this season and I grabbed all of them.

He looked really good Monday night.

Courtland Sutton hauled in four grabs for 40 yards on seven targets Sunday in Denver’s Week 2 loss to Chicago.

He vanished for a large portion of Sunday's game, coming up empty on his lone first-half target. Sutton's disappearance was a stark contrast from a week earlier, when he dusted the Raiders for 120 yards on seven catches. The second-year receiver made up for a lost time with a big fourth quarter, notching all of his catches during that period. Many of his catches were of the do-or-die variety including a clutch reception on fourth-and-10 to keep Denver's comeback hopes alive. The Bears presented a tough matchup for Sutton, though his next opponent—the Packers in Week 3—could prove just as difficult.
