WR Courtland Sutton, DEN (2 Viewers)

How far does Sutton jump up in dynasty rankings? Available in my short bench contact league, but I’d have to stick a no-drop contract on him

Sutton was going to jump in the offseason, anyway. This just accelerates things.

I'm not sure I've ever been more confident a young WR will eventually be a FF stud, but he's still a rookie.

It's likely not happening this season, but Sutton should have a bullet next to his dynasty ranking for 2019+.

 
I am in.  Just acquired Sutton in redraft after the DT trade.  Cost me Goff but I have Mahomes and who cares about QB.

Love the talent and love the schedule.  Choo choo!

IIRC he was a recommended late round flier in redraft this year as a player that could have a real impact 2nd half of the season.

If you need help at WR, definitely worth a shot. D. Thomas was getting targets.

 
Oh my... people are coming after Sutton hard and heavy in 3 different leagues.  Considering it in one league because I know it will be an overpay.

Well, Sanders is still on the team but Sutton should be able to command increased attention in redzone now (if they ever go there often). 

Disclaimer: I'm Sutton owner in dynasty PPR league.

5 bench spots. I know one guy will take Fitzy. I think he can make it to 4 but he won't clear waivers. I do need help at WR. I got Sanders too though.

Denver rookie WR Courtland Sutton was the biggest winner of the day. Simply put, the Thomas deal pushes Sutton into a starting gig. Sutton has two touchdowns and 182 yards over the last four games, playing about two-thirds of the time. Now, he’ll be heavily utilized as a primary player. Not every rookie receiver is ready to contribute in his first season, but Sutton is an exception to the rule.

Was able to scoop him up.  Excited.  I might have to start him and sanders together.  Which I'm not that excited about

 
missed in my redraft. bummed. I could have used a wr. maybe i can trade for him or his owner will get impatient if he doesnt produce immediately

been in on him in dynasty since day one though! so sign me up for the train

Speaking after the Demaryius Thomas trade, GM John Elway said it gives Courtland Sutton a "chance to get out there and play more and be a bigger part of it because we think he’s ready to go."

Sutton was one of the biggest winners of trade deadline day, if not the biggest winner of them all. He figures to solidify himself into Thomas' old role as an every-down player next to Emmanuel Sanders with fellow rookie DaeSean Hamilton working in as the third wideout. Sutton has routinely come up with big plays the first eight weeks and was second on the team in air yards the last two weeks. Sutton is the top add of the week on waivers as an upside WR2 the rest of the way.

Was offered Godwin for Sutton in redraft. I'm thinking his value is above Godwin's, so I'm holding.

What is Sutton's tier now, for just this year?

Golladay, John Brown, Diggs, Landry, Cooks?

 
Courtland Sutton vs. Texans: Like Golladay above, Sutton was another big winner of the trade deadline. The 40th pick back in April’s draft, Sutton is “ready for a bigger role,” according to GM John Elway, so Elway dealt Demaryius Thomas to the Texans. Sutton had already been stealing Thomas’ snaps before the trade, as both were playing around 70% of the downs behind Emmanuel Sanders at 85-90%. Sutton should now bump into that 80-plus range with upside for more. Thomas leaves behind 7.0 targets per game, and Sutton figures to see a significant boost on his 4.6 mark. Sutton is t-6th in the league averaging 19.1 yards per catch, and when he doesn’t make the play downfield he’s usually drawing a penalty. He simply needed to play more. Case Keenum isn’t good at all, but he’s attempted the ninth-most passes in the league. Denver trails so often that it is forced to throw, even though running the ball is their best offense. The Texans have allowed the ninth-most receptions to opposing wideouts and are 14th in pass-defense DVOA. They’re the definition of a pass-funnel defense, as Houston is No. 1 in run-defense DVOA. No. 1 CB Johnathan Joseph injured his ankle/knee last week and was limited on Wednesday. The Texans may be forced to play CB Shareece Wright significant snaps in his return from a groin issue. And Kevin Johnson is still out with a concussion. As is the case with Golladay, Sutton is a set-and-forget upside WR2 moving forward.

funny... one of the biggest knocks on sutton was his destination/situation was one of the least favorable among the top rookie wrs. yet here we are...

Going to be one of the all time steals for us who picked him near the end of round 1. 

cant believe i was able to trade yeldon for him in one of my dynasty leagues

This is why I always operate the best/talent-player-available approach in dynasty rookie draft. Talent players will find a way to emerge from muddied / least-favorable situation (i.e. Nick Chubb / Kerryon Johnson).

Things change fast....roadblocks to talented players are generally over come....thats why you shouldnt give up on r.penny or ron jones just yet

eh, disagree on Penny. Jones is one dimensional but there isnt amazing talent ahead of him. he looks just terrible though. 

But yes, it's too early to give up on many rookies

Odd to compare Sutton’s situation to those two. Sutton had to persevere at a position that has a fairly steep learning curve with two well established proven vets in front of him.  Penny and RoJo were given every opportunity to make the starting job their own at a position where rookies can thrive and ended up blocked by journeyman level talent because they couldn’t get it done on the field.

This is why I think its funny to see us here right now. because guys taken ahead of sutton are looking like they missed their "optimal situation" that made them high picks. Sutton should have been 1.4-1.6, right where guys like Penny and Jones were taken in many drafts. I traded down twice with one of my 1sts and nabbed him 1.11 and he went 1.14 in the league I traded for him in. All because if his situation and people said he was "raw." In December this thread was salivating over him as a potential top 3 pick. 

Penny and Jones missed their shot for now. Sutton has over come being "raw" enough for Denver to trade their starting wr and give him his shot. 

 
The other thing to keep in mind with Sutton is that, similar to Chubb in Cleveland, it's not like the opportunity just magically opened up for him. They drafted him to be DT's long-term replacement and then clearly liked what they saw enough to move Thomas now. (Alternatively, it wasn't so much that Sutton was better than they thought as it was their season went down the toilet so they figured they might as well give him a shot.)

 
I'd be curious as to what his trade value looks like right now.  I'm sure that he's been moved in some leagues since this news broke.

the fact that Chubb and Sutton dropped because of their situation is exactly my point. people are too obsessed with players who might help them week 1. if you want that, go play redraft. In dynasty it should be about the long game and talent. Talent should always beat situation. Guys like Sutton, Chubb, and even Washington dropped due to their situations. 

recent drafts and players helping right away has led to this mindset. it's crazy what one or two years of instant production from rookies does to a draft in subsequent years.

Right. The counterexample was Kareem Hunt. They might have had high hopes for him, but they only spent a 3rd-rounder on him, and he only got his opportunity because of Ware's injury (we'll never really know how he would have been used last year with a healthy Ware.) The investments in Sutton and Chubb, both in the form of draft capital as well as clearing the depth chart, is very telling.

Sutton was getting just as much field time as DT when the trade happened.  DT was giving way to Sutton because Sutton looked to be ready to pass him.
