WR Davante Adams, LAR (3 Viewers)

Oh my God. So Stafford's back is terrible and he might have to catch passes from Jimmy G. Sean, get yourself on the phone and don't let this happen!

I mean, even if this is fine, can you really draft Adams that high knowing that he's a bum back away from this guy as his QB? I mean, Adams ripped him on his way out of Las Vegas. Why would dreamy Jimmy risk his good looks to hang in the pocket and hit Davante.

Jeepers. It was reported today that Stafford had an epidural injection in his back for an aggravated disc and might be ready to start the season. Or something like that. And then we get this news.

“The #Rams remain confident that Matthew Stafford will be ready to begin the regular season. But as was clear during yesterday’s joint practice with the #Cowboys, they love what Jimmy Garoppolo brings as his backup,” Ian Rapoport posted on X.

Stafford is supposed to do work this week but is also week-to-week

Adams and Jimmy apparently made up. Something about them sharing the darkest part of their lives together when with the Raiduhs
That’s good news, but the bad news is that Jimmy is still awful and can’t support Adams as a WR2, never mind WR1
No Jimmy G fan but can’t compare the situations. Top 2/3 HC vs new then fired HC, fantastic offense scheme vs disaster, good Oline vs bad one, another elite WR opposite him vs Jakobi Meyers, etc etc etc.

Despite all this he had 37 catches for 453 yards and scored 4 touchdowns in 7 games with Jimmy Garoppolo in his career. Extend that over a full season and he’s over 1000 and 10 (with the **** situation). That’s absolutely WR2

Jimmy G started 7 games but left one game after 3 snaps and really throwing that game makes no difference just trying to put in in accurate context.

In the other 6 games Adams went for 32/407/3. That's decent, would put him line with where he's getting drafted but that's on a fairly healthy 53 targets, a 150 season pace which he's not sniffing if Puka is healthy.

That was almost all with Josh McDaniels and he's not McVay but on the whole he's generally been a positive for his WR's.

The two major negatives I have and/or would disagree on your analysis is:

That was 2 years ago and neither Davante or Jimmy is made of wine.

I'd much rather have Jakobi Myers opposite Davante then Puka. Davante needs volume and he's the #2 now to a WR who could be among the league leaders in volume.

I know you’re a Rams fan but I’d be absolutely treating Adams as a toxic waste dump if Stafford goes down. I don’t think Jimmy G carried any WR2 on SF and you’ve got Nacua getting what is likely first dibs. Did you watch those Raiders games where Davante was missed by fifteen yards or so wide open?

He had a decent per-game average as a target hog with Jimmy but Jimmy has never supported WR1 never mind a WR2 (that is the second receiver on the team). I have Emmanuel Sanders as his top guy in SF for that year he started when Sanders finished WR40. I mean, they wouldn’t let Jimmy throw the ball and he didn’t want to.

He lasted eight games with the Raiders and missed two of those, including the injury in the eighth game. This guy is here to hold clipboards and nothing else.

eta* Sanders finished WR30 in PPR and Deebo Samuel finished WR31 - FantasyPros

And Sanders and Deebo finished 30 and 31 in 2019. He couldn’t support his WR1 as a WR2 with Kyle Shanahan as his coach. Forget it.

Being a Rams fan has nothing to do with my take. I had Adams in 23 and watched every excruciating down that year, I lived how bad Jimmy was. I’m in literal pain defending this take, but I truly believe this situation is light years better than the one they were in before and this the results will be better.

Now, putting my Rams hat on. I don’t think it matters, as I think Stafford plays the majority of the year. Dude is an absolute Iron Man. And because of that Puka and Adam’s smash.

Well, it would be the first time so I’d be happy too

In the other 6 games Adams went for 32/407/3.

I think Jimmy missed one of those.
I actually accounted for that. Jimmy started weeks 1-3, 5-6, 8 and 18.

Week 18 he went out after 3 snaps. I tossed that game.

In the other 5 of his other 6 games he started and played 100% of the snaps. One week, week 6, he only played about 60% of the snaps and gave way to Hoyer who came in and went 6/10/102. I did not break down how many of those passes from Hoyer went to Adams but this was Davantes second worst game of the year so if someone thought it was a better analysis to throw that game out as well it would make Davante and Jimmy G's per game look better. To each their own, I just though the same size was so small and Jimmy played enough in that game to count it.

If you wanted to look at their connection in the most positive favorable light you could see that they started the first 3 games together doing extremely well and then it went downhill and that might have coincided with Jimmy's health after he got concussed in week 4 and left early in that week 6 game with a back issue.

Very fair. I generally don't get wrapped up and use stats just to make a point so forthrightness is welcome. Davante did have a game of 42 PPR points with Garappolo so there's that. I think his other games were over twenty and then in double digits (around 15?) for the first three games. And I'll grant concussions play a role weeks after and that we can't decidedly say that Jimmy G wasn't affected.

I can say that in my amateur assessment (and I think most everybody's), Jimmy G is not a good quarterback, but then I'm looking and there are stats that indicate he is better than I think. He was reined in wherever he went (probably because of talent, but wait. . . ) but in 2019 and 2021 he had good to excellent efficiency stats (actually, they're excellent). His QB rating at ESPN was 9th amongst QBs in 2021 with a 98.7, and he had a 102 rating in 2019 placing him 8th among QBs. His QBR in 2021 was 13th and in 2019 it was 12th. That is likely due to sacks. His Y/A was 3rd in the NFL, his completion percentage was top five and so were his total TDs. 2021 was a similar story, of low-volume, high-efficiency stuff (he finished top eight in those three categories again), but it was even lower-volume.

And for fantasy, he's just really low-volume and it hurts his receivers. He finished 19th in attempts in 2019 and 20th in 2020. So not too bad, but below-average by a fair amount. They were also 31st and 29th in pass/run percentage. That's striking. In Shanhan's other years they were 7th, 18th, 19th, 18th, 26th, 30th, and 20th with Purdy last year. It might be a result of winning, but Shanahan's team averaged 30th with Jimmy and 20th without him. That's significant, it would seem.

His time in Las Vegas was bad statistically. A 77 QB rating, a 65.0 completion percentage, a 7/9 TD/INT ratio, 24 or so attempts per game, but it is useless to do per game stats for that year because of his injuries.

Anyway, Deebo finished 3rd overall in PPR in 2021, but if you subtract out his rushing (we're trying to predict Davante here) he winds up in the 30s. Aiyuk finished 35th. I mean, he didn't support even a WR2 in San Francisco the two years he started. That's really the bottom line if you're trying to predict Davante—and Davante is his own team's WR2 as it stands right now.

I don't know. I hope all of this is moot because I don't think Jimmy Garoppolo can support even one WR.
