WR Davante Adams, LAR (3 Viewers)

On my bench. Pretty sure he's on my never draft again list after how frustrating this season was.
He’s actually been pretty solid, especially since he’s reunited with Rodgers. 17 and 28 PPR points the previous two weeks prior to todays explosion.
Yeah. He has been performing the last few weeks now. But he was AWOL for about a month and then started slow. I picked had to pick up other options that I trusted more and it bit me this week. Thought I looked smart when he threw up the goose egg in the first half. This offense can be such a brutal watch.

It happens.

Limited practice and questionable (hip). Anybody hear any other thing about him? What do we think?

He’s WR12 overall PPR on the year. Elite again this year. And he missed three games with a “hamstring" injury.

There’s “optimism” he plays so I imagine he’s out there. I sure as heck need him. Not sure about the weather in Buffalo Sunday, though.

Something to consider from this article:

The futures of both Rodgers and Adams are unknown in New York, but the duo still has some work to do before the season ends.

Speaking with reporters on Friday, Adams teased the possibility of catching Rodgers’s 500th career touchdown pass, as Rodgers currently sits at 499.

“Obviously I would love that. I got 200, I got 400, so it would be dope to get 500 as well,” Adams said. “I think 200 was my first [touchdown]. We’ve had some special connections in the past.”

With the Jets:

11 games: 114 targets, 67 receptions, 854 yards, 7 TD's
Extrapolates to: 176 targets, 104 receptions, 1319 yards, 11 TD's.

He's still pretty elite. He JUST turned 32. Does he have another big season in him? Also what happens with Rodgers?

New: in an offseason where star WRs continue to be linked to the Chargers, Davante Adams is the latest name in a new report.

Yay or nay on signing Davante Adams if he is released by the Jets?

32 Beat Writers
"He has yet to slow down and has posted 1,000+ yards in seven consecutive seasons. Adams averaged 2.96 yards per route run vs. man coverage in 2024, a testament to his separation ability even as he ages."

I think Davante Adams is the best WR on the market this offseason, unless Tyreek is available.

Higgins, Godwin, Amari Cooper, Stefon Diggs, DeAndre Hopkins

Godwin and Higgins are head and shoulders above, it would seem.
Yeah, I'm taking Adams out of that group. Would probably throw Keenan Allen and Deebo Samuel right there with the latter 3 vets.

Probably would rank them Hill>>>Adams>>Higgins>Godwin>Diggs>Hopkins>Deebo>Allen>>Cooper.

Of course, I'm also of the opinion neither Higgins nor Godwin hit the market.

Probably would rank them Hill>>>Adams>>Higgins>Godwin

For the immediate future, say, a two-year window I'd have:

Hill
Higgins

Godwin

Adams (and I think I show him unique favoritism)
Deebo

Diggs
Hopkins

Allen
Cooper

Long-term has to see Higgins on top with Godwin slightly behind and Deebo a distant third.

I think I'm lower on Higgins than the general consensus. I think the role he has in Cincinnati, is what he is. High-end #2 WR, who gets nicked up a lot. I also knock Godwin (and Diggs) because he's coming off a serious season ending injury. Otherwise, we are pretty much agreed.

Hill and Adams are the only guys I think are #1 WRs, though they are certainly aging. I am probably higher on Hill long-term though too.

Possible hot take:

I think Davante Adams is the best WR on the market this offseason, unless Tyreek is available.

IMO no way he is a better prospect than Higgins if Higgins hits unrestricted free agency. In fact, I think Higgins would the best WR to ever reach UFA if that happens. Why:
  1. He is 26. He will sign a 5 year contract and will be in his prime throughout that contract.
  2. He is a legit WR1 caliber X receiver.
  3. He is great against both man and zone coverage.
  4. He is great in the red zone.
Adams may be all of those things except #1... but #1 is a big deal. And it goes beyond just his ability to perform on the field. Whatever team signs him doesn't have to worry about WR1 for 3+ years... doesn't have to consider expending premium draft capital on WR.

As a Chargers fan, I would absolutely love it if they sign Higgins. He and McConkey would be locked in as their top 2 WRs for 3 years minimum. They could ignore WR in early rounds for at least the next 3 drafts. There is real value in that.

I just disagree with #2. I think Higgins has greatly benefitted from Chase (and especially Burrow) and hasn't proven that he's capable of being a #1 WR. I'm also a little concerned that he's missed 10 games (and chunks of others) over the last 2 seasons, due to a myriad to injuries.

I would 100% disagree with Higgins being the best WR to ever hit FA, obviously if I prefer Adams, but even beyond that, Terrell Owens was arguably the best WR in the NFL when he was a FA going from Philly to Dallas. I'd also argue Vincent Jackson was better going from SD to TB. I could see Higgins being on par with Plaxico Burress going from Pittsburgh to NY, in that it was a to that point career #2 WR getting his shot as a #1.

I know its probably a minority opinion (though not a surprise given my stance on McConkey since last January) but I think if Higgins went to LA, he'd still be a #2 WR.

I think Adams (and Hill if he's available) are the only #1 WRs on the market. To me, Higgins, Godwin, etc. are all #2 guys who vary on how great they are.

Count me in that minority. Totally open to being wrong, and I could see people rationalize Tee can't help the way Cincy uses/deploys him; but he has yet to even show himself as a high level runner of a full route tree at the NFL level IMO (go's, digs, and slants account for almost 70% of his routes run the past few years), let alone show other qualities a WR1 should possess like zone awareness and sharp breaks and cuts at the stem of his routes. RP had him charted in the 50%th percentile against man and zone last season (Harmon hasn't dropped this years yet). And while he was banged up in 2023, the year before he was still in the 70%th percentile for man (still around 50th for zone). That's very good, not great. And there is a wide margin between the two categories. He just hasn't shown an ability to identify soft spots and settle in pockets even when playing with one of the best QBs in the league and lining up across from one of the two best WRs in the league who's drawing the top CB every week.

Saying all that, I still think he's a good WR. I'd say he's one of the best WR2s in the league. But that doesn't make him even close to a WR1. If anything, I think history has shown us more often than not, trying to push a great WR2 into a WR1 role often brings their game down, not up. That doesn't mean it'll be the case for Higgins. Maybe he possesses a bunch of skills we have yet to see from him in the past 5 years. It just feels like an odd argument to make that one of the better offenses in the league was holding him back haha. And looking at actual data from the past few years on Higgins, as well as the history of similar transitions; I think you have to be wearing the rosiest of rose tinted glasses to call him the "best FA WR of all time". I think odds are currently against him being anything more than a WR1 in name and (owners with their fingers crossed) targets only. But sometimes that's all it takes to put up fantasy numbers. And if he could play across from Ladd in LA, who I think could actually be a WR1 in the NFL, it wouldn't surprise me if he posts similar numbers to what he has been in Cincy the past few years, or even getting a small bump up if he can stay healthy. I'm not overly optimistic he's going to drastically increase his fantasy production though, especially depending on where he goes.

This is spot-on, IMO. Everything down to the trying to push WR2s into the WR1 and how if he goes to LA, McConkey being there might make him 1a or 1b. The famous examples of the transition gone wrong include JuJu Smith-Schuster and Alvin Harper of the Cowboys way back when, but I'm sure there are other examples of this narrative taking shape.

Perhaps he breaks that mold. We will see. Nice to bring Harmon into this (I'm a subscriber and should use it more) and give some deeper analysis about Tee and his difficulty with zones. He really should be better than that, but it also depends on how many routes he runs that are conducive to beating zones and how much time Burrow has had (which isn't a ton) to throw the ball given the time it takes to sit down in or beat a zone.

When I said best WR to reach FA, I definitely forgot about TO. But TO was 33 when he got to Dallas. To his credit, he played well in his 3 seasons there. But part of my point is that Higgins is 26, and there is every reason to believe a team can sign him to a 5 year contract and get 4-5 strong seasons out of him. That wouldn't have seemed as likely for TO, and, in fact, it didn't happen. Same for Adams, whose shelf life is short. And IMO Higgins is clearly a better free agent WR than Jackson (who I liked a lot as a Chargers fan), Burress, and any other players I can think of.

I suppose I could be biased because he is such a perfect fit for the Chargers. He is everything the Chargers need in a 1a/1b WR to complement McConkey (and, of lesser importance, push Quentin Johnston to Z).

he has yet to even show himself as a high level runner of a full route tree at the NFL level IMO (go's, digs, and slants account for almost 70% of his routes run the past few years),

Harmon showed those routes as 60.1% of his total in 2023. Still a large percentage, but not 70%. And this would have been influenced by the routes Chase was running, as well as the routes Burrow likes. Not having a high percentage of some routes doesn't equate to not being capable of running those routes successfully. For example, in 2023, only 4.3% of his routes were posts, but his success rate on those routes was 83.3%.

RP had him charted in the 50%th percentile against man and zone last season (Harmon hasn't dropped this years yet). And while he was banged up in 2023, the year before he was still in the 70%th percentile for man (still around 50th for zone). That's very good, not great.

Despite all that, here is the closing paragraph in Harmon's 2023 player profile on Higgins:

Overall, Higgins is still a top-20 receiver in the NFL despite a down season, and a healthy version would make just about any passing offense better – whether it’s the Bengals or someone else. That would be especially true if that hypothetical team needed a vertical outside receiver presence who is a bit of a throwback model at the position.

Now I will resist the urge to continue hijacking this Adams thread.

Sleeper just posted that the Jets are taking offers for Adams.

Agreed that the Chargers seem like one of THE best case landing spots. Perhaps the Chiefs if they let both Brown and Hopkins walk.

This was likely after a Rapaport tweet that ended with him saying he'd likely be cut if they can't find a trade partner. Which is most likely how this goes.

"Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports the Jets are taking calls about Adams, and if they can’t get a deal, the team is expected to release the six-time Pro Bowler. It seems unlikely the Jets will find a taker, considering Adams is scheduled for a cap hit of more than $38.25 million for 2025. The Jets can save $29.877 million with Adams’ release. Adams could rejoin Rodgers on a third team after the two played together with the Packers and the Jets."

You trade for the contract, not the player. Devante's 2025 contract is fugly. Maybe the Jets get a late-round swap from a team that just wants first dibs on renegotiating that deal, but otherwise, I see FA in his future. Then things get interesting b/c I think he still has a year or two of low/mid WR1 play in him, if he lands with an elite QB/offense.

After Higgins, I think Adams would fit in Charger gear just fine. They'd have a trio that makes sense for once (at least since the 1980's that is).

Agree, if Adams is released, I think the Chargers should be aggressive about signing him. Same for Mark Andrews.

Like Andrews as well if the cost is mid to high. Not high to really high.

Would be massively short-sighted and desperate for the Jets to trade for him. They’re going nowhere, Rodgers can’t handle/escape pressure anymore and the o’line is a sieve, he needs to hang ‘em up this offseason. The front office and coaching staff needs to go. Save the pick to use on o’line, and draft a QB with their 1st and hope you hit this time.

Probably means Adams ends up a Jet.

Wasted a 3rd, way to go Jets. Tons of us told you months ago…

They could have drafted another Malachi Corley in the 3rd, think of the offensive prowess!!!

Lot of speculation that he'll go where Rodgers does, but not sure he waits that long if a team throws him a good amount of cash first. And with the lackluster FA WR crop, especially with Higgins tagged, that's certainly possible.

Can make a case he's the number one FA WR and I think he can sign now, does not need to wait for FA to open so that gives him a nice jump on the comp. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on that.

I honestly got no idea where he goes. I'm sure he'd love to be paid well and go to one of the West Coast teams, all of which fit the mold of contenders. Not sure how mutual the feeling is however relative to possible contract demands and maybe locker room fit.

What is most important to him? Stats, money, familiarity with QB, winning, location? IMO he's shown his least important criteria is winning/contending but perhaps all the losing the last few years and being near the end of his career has him re-evaluating.

In theory he AND Rodgers could sign somewhere tonight.

I think its probably unfair to assume they are joined at the hip, but if they are, it'd be quite the boost to an offense like Pittsburgh. I'd say if they plan on sticking together, the only teams that really work are Pittsburgh and Tennessee.

Not sure they actually did more than just inform Rodgers that he’s gone, unless you have a more recent link:

My bad - yes, was talking about Rodgers

I think the Vikes will just move on with JJ

So I think the Rodgers/Adams duo will go to one of

Browns
Steelers
Titans
Raiders
Seahawks
Giants

I sort of lean Titans and in a way I think the Raiders might be out although I could see Carrol maybe convincing Adams to comeback. Could see them wanting to go to the big apple though and would be intriguing that they (Giants/Jets) both play in the medowlands
