WR Demario Douglas, NE (7 Viewers)

@32BeatWriters
“There was some scuttlebutt about where WR DeMario Douglas fits into the McDaniels offense, but if the spring is any indication, Pop is in for a featured role. Douglas looked at home working the slot routes in a scheme that has produced high-volume slot receivers such as Jakobi Meyers, Julian Edelman, and Wes Welker, to name a few. Douglas's quickness inside to feast on matchups and out-leveraged defenders was evident. He was Maye's favorite receiver in the final two practices, while the Maye-to-Douglas connection also had shades of the Pats QB working with current Colts WR Josh Downs at North Carolina.”

As a guy holding Douglas deep on my dynasty bench, I love hearing these things. But for some reason I just have a hard time believing it. 800 yards would seem like a fantastic season for him.

I have turned into a Pop-doubter myself and will believe he fits into this offense when I see it (I am skeptical he can handle the physical demands of a McDaniels slot) but all reports I have read have been positive including Vrabel talking about him below...with the Pats WR room still in-flux this season he has a great opportunity so while I do have my doubts, I think he is definitely worthy of a fantasy roster spot going into the season.

He’s free and could be (probably will be) a decent injury or bye week filler. A consistent top 30 fantasy football player he is not. The only cost is a roster spot so if you’re rebuilding he’s pointless to roster because nobody is trading him for a third. But if you’re contending you could do a lot worse.

Later round target for me in PPR leagues. Excellent bye week/injury fill in. If he ends up thriving in this offense then all the better.

I was thinking more of a dynasty perspective.

I don't know if I'm picking him up in traditional redraft leagues. I think you can roll off waivers for bye week and injury fillers and not clog that roster spot. Unless you really think he could emerge as a 12+ ppr point guy but I think that's slim odds. I have him as more of a 10 ppr point guy. You'll be better off rolling the dice on higher risk profiles that late in redraft. My humble opinion.

In best ball, he's a nice freebie backstop late as a guy to insure against getting a lot of goose eggs as I tend to believe he'll have a fairly consistent 4-8 targets with low ADOT and some YAC. If one of your studs goes down for a few weeks you might not fall too far behind with a few of these types late. I know everyone is trying to "win it all" but I'm happy to get my money back and roll it over for the fun of it.

I wish Jake Ciley would stop living his life and get his spreadsheet out. I'm dying to work my projections and dive into some best ball analysis. I ran out of my initial $10 investment from 5 years ago in underdog this year. That was a promo for a sub to a different ff content provider who's work ended up not that impressive. But I think it's time to put another $10 and see if I can advance a team.

I like to print out the ADP and contrast it to my projections then hunt value. That's sort of my go-to strategy across formats. Best ball for me is like a warmup for beating up on my home leaguemates. I skimped on my process last year and it bit me.

I think 2010 Davone Bess (79-820-5) is his ceiling, which is low end WR3/flex/bye filler territory. I'd prefer my WR's have more upside. I think Pop will be more useful to the Patriots than he will to his fantasy owners. But depending how deep your league is and how slim the pickings are he can be worth the end of the bench to see if the volume will be there. Worth noting that he only has 3 TD's to his name so far and only 1 one of them occurred in the red zone (an area I don't think he plays much in due to his size, 10 RZ targets in 31 career games so far).

FWIW, Douglas was used mostly as an outside receiver in OTAs and minicamp . . . lining up far more on the outside than he did the past two seasons. That could mean something, nothing, or all points in-between.

That being said, a lot of the NE receivers did not participate in the early pre-season stuff (in shorts and shells), so my takeaway from the past few weeks in NE is: it doesn't tell anyone much of anything. For example, Chism was a media darling in the first few preseason sessions, but this week he was playing on a different field with the non-starters. In limited time when he was added to the main field, he had no catches in live snaps. The NE offense will be fluid in terms of what people think will happen all the way up to opening day. I've checked in on the opinions of multiple folks that were at the practices and cover the team, and their conclusions, projected depth charts, starters, and roster cuts were all over the map so far.

Hmmmmmmmmm

He’s on someone’s practice squad in a 16 team contract league I’m in. I can poach him for almost nothing. Have a strong WR crew but could use a depth piece.

Interesting

I am not a big Pop guy but the reports on him have been all very good this offseason...definitely worth a roll of the dice.

McDaniels does have a way with these slot guys. You never know.

Agreed...my issue/fear with Pop is he won't be able to handle the punishment the McDaniel's slot usually gets...not sure he can be used in the same manner.

I just looked at their physical stats, JE 5-10 198, Douglas 5-8 192. On the surface they look pretty similar, but all bodies aren't put together the same. Edelman showed he could take a hell of a beating. Douglas, in his limited time, has not.

Agreed...Edelman and especially Welker took some hellacious beatings and kept getting up...I just don't think Pop's body can handle something similar on a week-to-week basis.

You may be right but I also feel defensive players over the middle have gotten smaller it’s one of the reasons why I think sub 200 pound RBs may get more run in the near future if linebackers are closer to 230 than 260.
