WR DeSean Jackson (2 Viewers)

Meanwhile the LAPD did talk to DeSean Jackson. In 2011.

The Los Angeles police department clarified a few points about former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson following his dismissal from the NFC East franchise.

1. Jackson hasn't been accused of being a gang member.

2. Although he's not suspected of being involved in gang-related murders, the LAPD did inquire about Jackson's ties to alleged members of the Crips street gang.

"It's kind of like 'Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon,' " LAPD Homicide Det. Chris Barling told the Philadelphia Daily News. "When people grow up in neighborhoods where you have gang involvement, you don't have to look too far before you find a connection to a connection. Now, how sinister that connection is, our position is that's for others to judge."

An LAPD detective contacted the Eagles in 2011, but the call wasn't returned. They did speak to Jackson, though.

"They didn't return the call, but we came across a number for him and had a conversation," Barling said. "It was nothing confrontational; he answered our questions."

"There's no other investigation that I'm aware of where Mr. Jackson's name has come up," he said. "It's clear he was not involved the homicides."

Jackson has issued a statement denying that he's a gang member.
Sounds like a good guy.

Trying to figure out why everyone wants the Eagles to say something?

The release spoke volumes - you can read between the lines.
Not everyone- but certainly the Eagles' fan base deserve something.
Like others have stated above - you won't hear anything other than generic explanations.

The guys was high maintenance - he was a drain on the cap - they got rid of him.

I seriously don't know what people want.
Completely agree. He was a whiny diva that would enjoy a big deal made out of him. A 2 sentence release is perfect.

This is what is says.

The San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders both reached out to the Los Angeles Police Department to confirm reports of DeSean Jackson's continued involvement with alleged members of Los Angeles street gangs; LAPD confirmed the reports, CSNBayArea.com has learned.
In other words there's no LAPD source, just a generic "LAPD confirmed the reports" statement from a cable outlet. Unlike the named source (Barling) in the story I linked above.
I posted these links in the context of the allegations the Eagles may have fabricated the gang stories. This was an article that also alludes to Jackson's gang connections. Its from a media market 3000 miles from Philly. It was the Bay Area media that posted that story and headline on their site. Media that as far as I know has no vendetta against Jackson.

Two markets now, separated by 3000 miles, have posted stories that Jackson has gang ties. Is it concrete evidence? I don't think so. But it seems its more than just the Eagles that have suspicions. Should the NFLPA investigate the origins of this story too? Is CSN Bay Area tarnishing Jackson's reputation as well?

It's ridiculous they are investigating this. The idiot was flashing gang signs on Instagram while hanging out with members of the gang.....no one's making up things that are false to make him look bad. He did this to himself. Any employer has the right to make that decision.

Actually I think on page 1 of the "Eagles cut Jackson" thread there is an actual, named, real LAPD investigator/inspector named.

I have no earthly idea why this wouldn't be enough for any reasonable person to assume he's affiliated. "Beyond a reasonable doubt proof"? maybe not- but that's hardly the standard necessary here. It's the reasonable, and most likely answer, and is more than enough for any employer to release an employee.

It's ok to believe the Eagles should have kept him anyway, but it's beyond absurd to demand more proof of gang affiliation than this.

I'm not a fan of DeSean Jackson off the field, he is an idiot and a disrespectful tool. People who hang with them members because of old roots are not always in the gang and if you are not throwing up signs when you are with them in a picture part of it or not, you will have some problems. Not my lifestyle and can see people who look down on Jackson for having friends in a gang, but does not mean he is in the gang.

Hernandez has everyone on high alert, but I bet you will be surprised and gang ties players have, what about Marshawn Lynch and his boys in Oakland? Watched an E:60 about him, dude still has friends in gangs. Hernandez is the exception not the norm for the players who have gang friends. I do not have proof of this but my assumption is more players than you think are involved in some way with some people who are involved with bad things.

I'm not familiar with gang etiquette in pictures and I think your right that Jackson and Hernandez definitely aren't the only 2 with these connections but mostly think it's ridiculous that people are whining about the Eagles needed to hold a press conference or that they leaked this bad info to make him look bad. He wasnt only putting it online he flashed gang signs in a game! Against the Skins!

Numerous sources tell CBS Philly that DeSean Jackson was "blatantly insubordinate" and "not very well liked by his teammates" with the Eagles, leading to his release before signing with Washington.

CBS Philly reports Jackson threw "temper tantrums cussing out (Chip) Kelly several times in front of the team," and was "more concerned with his rap label" than winning football games. The dislike among teammates would seem to be confirmed by their dispassionate reactions to his departure. "I’ll put it this way, when it came out last Friday that [Jackson] was released," said one source, "more than a few guys were happy it happened. They said ‘good riddance.’"

yes, nice anonymous quotes after the fact.

Desean definitely did not have many friends on the team, but I do not see how he prevented them from winning.

Anonymous or not, there haven't been any reports of him being missed.

Here's the full quote:

“The fact is, (Jackson) was a ‘me-guy’ with an attitude problem and (Jeremy) Maclin is the complete opposite, a team guy, a great character guy you go to war with,” a source told CBS Philly. “Funny how (Jackson) has this anti-bully thing and he thought he could push (Chip Kelly) around; he found out otherwise.

“His being cut had nothing to do with gang stuff. The team knew it. Everyone knew had had ‘ties.’ Those were his guys. That’s okay. What put him out was his selfishness….I’ll put it this way, when it came out last Friday that he was released, more than a few guys were happy it happened. They said ‘good riddance.’ He had no real connection with anyone.”

That's false on the missing part. McCoy said he would be missed and he was a major weapon for the team. He said he is the best deep threat the game has and the front office must have some kind of plan to let a player like that go.

Lots of courageous anonymous sources on this one, lol.

Reminds me of all the stories Mike Shanahan planted near the end of last season trying to trash Robert Griffin and others, and make himself look good in the process. The stories were all sourced anonymously. Everybody knew where they came from --- Shanahan.

It's pretty easy to see where these anonymously-sourced stories come from also --- the team whose coach cut Jackson by phone without telling him why.

Always a conspiracy against the Skins and their new found free agency gems. He really won you over with his nerdy outfit he wore in the interview I guess, such a victim. I'm sure he has no idea why he was cut....that damn coach haha.

We still talking about this? He was cut because of his cap hit and because he didn't get along with Kelly. The gang stuff is not even remotely important here.

Jason Kelce on Jackson:

We just made an extremely unpopular decision, but I couldn't be more excited and happy with where this organization is going!!
Mike Vick on Jackson:

"I think sometimes it takes a change in your life to understand really what needs to happen, and the course that needs to be set, maybe it's time for a change for DeSean to help him understand the maturation process of his young NFL life and his personal life."
Yes, I would love for the sources to be named, but I think it's naïve to believe that the content of that story isn't correct.

While there is truth to everything, I would think it is naive to believe that a lot of this isn't blown out of proportion and exaggerated because Kelly didn't like him. Its also naive to think that the Eagles didn't plant some of this stuff on purpose. Just a coincidence huh?

Five Things DeSean Jackson and Steven A. Smith Got Wrong

In what was billed as an interview to "clear the air," former Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson sat down with ESPN's Stephen A. Smith on Friday for a wide-ranging discussion.

Jackson addressed an NJ.com story in whichpolice connected him to gang members allegedly involved in two Los Angeles homicides. He talked about reports that he has missed meetings, and he discussed his relationship with Eagles head coach Chip Kelly.

But in that 30-minute interview, Jackson and Smith mischaracterized the NJ.com story several times. Here's what they got wrong:

Smith said the NJ.com report stated that Jackson is in a gang.

In the story, Los Angeles police said there was no evidence Jackson was in a gang, but that they believed he was associated with reputed gang members, and police were troubled that Jackson was flashing gang signs on social media and in NFL games. (When the story was published, the NFL said it would look into whether Jackson was flashing gang signs, which would be grounds for discipline.)

LAPD Detective Eric Crosson said in the story: "You don't want to see anybody throwing up gang signs like he did in the Redskins game last year. Those were neighborhood Crip gang signs and he flashed them during a game. He may not be affiliated with the gang, but they don't [ordinarily] take kindly to those not in the gang throwing up those gang signs."

During the interview, Smith said, "You are not associated, or do not hang out, with any gang members."

Jackson, however, admitted during the interview that he associates with gang members, just not when they're doing "negative things." Jackson tried to make the distinction of hanging out with gang members as individuals while not being affiliated with their gangs.

"Do I know friends that are out there involved (in gang activities)? Yes," Jackson told ESPN on Friday. "I try to stay away from them. ... I'm definitely aware and know certain gang members, but as far as me being affiliated and me being a gang member, never not have once been. Never have had any affiliation with going out and doing things that are against the law."

Later, when addressing the gang signs, he said, "... if you see signs or if you see me in pictures with affiliated gang members or whatever the case may be, that sign I am throwing up is to connect me with me and my boys," he said.

Smith implied the story about Jackson's alleged gang ties was leaked by the Eagles to NJ.com.

The conspiracy theories surrounding the story are comical. NJ.com uncovered Jackson's ties to alleged gang members through its own reporting. The Eagles played no part in NJ.com's investigation. When asked about Jackson's alleged gang ties, team officials said they were unaware of the ties and would not comment.

The NFLPA says it will look into whether the Eagles engaged in a smear campaign. When a union official contacted NJ.com sports director Kevin Manahan, the official was told the Eagles provided no information on Jackson's alleged gang ties.

During the ESPN interview, Jackson said he knew about the story a few days before its publication -- because NJ.com reached out to his representatives for comment and to speak with Jackson. But Jackson was not made available, and his publicist's sole comment was to deny Jackson was in a gang, an accusation the story never made.

DeSean Jackson said he has missed "one meeting" in his career

According to what's already been reported, that's likely not true. Jackson was suspended for missing a meeting in 2011, and skipped an exit interview with Kelly at the end of this past season. That's two.

In addition, an Eagles source told NJ.com two weeks ago that Jackson missed multiple meetings last season.

CBS Sports reported Friday that Jackson hasn't been a model employee.

Jackson said he distanced himself from Theron Shakir, his friend and a rapper who performed for Jackson's music label, while Shakir was on trial for murder.

"Through the process, and the time where (Theron Shakir) was in jail, I kind of had to almost step back," Jackson said during the ESPN interview. "Because I'm a professional athlete. I know the ties of being around, or being seen, or making calls, or doing all that stuff that could easily make me be apart of it," Jackson said.

Jackson's instagram account, however, told a different story. Jackson posted a picture of Shakir during the trial, pleading for his release.

After the NJ.com story was published, Jackson deleted all photos of Shakir and him from his account, as well as other photos shown in the NJ.com reporting.

It's not a coincidence. The Eagles haven't commented on Jackson's release so the media is digging up information.

94.1 WIP in Philadelphia had the author of the CBS story on the radio today. The author of the story said he talked to multiple players, both past and present and they all painted the same picture of Desean, a "me first" player who was more concerned with "getting his" than with winning. He used the analogy, if a basketball player scored 40pts, had 20 rebounds and 20 assists, and the team lost by 2, he'd be happy with the result while the rest of the team was upset for the loss. He also said if he had to estimate (because he said he didn't talk to every player) he said probably 80% of the locker room is glad he's gone.

The author also said something along the lines of: Jackson much like a little kid, would push the coaching staff to see what he could get away with. He also went a bit into Jackson during the Andy Reid era and said Reid would often turn a blind eye to Jackson's antics which the author said was understandable because he was "Reid's guy". Reid had a different connection with Jackson because he drafted him.

He also said, among other things, that Kelly is considered a players coach and had an open door policy for all his players.

For Kelly not to like Desean, I'd say Desean would have to be a real piece of work. For Kelly to actually cut the guy, he has to be a total #####. Jackson himself during the Stephen A. Smith interview didn't even deny yelling at coaches, missing meetings or being late. He simply wrote it off as being "immature". Exaggeration? Minimal at best IMO.

Gotta love DC media quoting an interview with a former Dallas player from a Philadelphia radio station.
Not to mention a WR saying a WR shifts the balance of power in the division. Remember when people said the Eagles trading McNabb to Washington was the dumbest trade in the history of the NFL?

Gotta love DC media entertainment quoting an interview with a former Dallas player from a Philadelphia radio station.
Fixed.

Steinberg is not a journalist, beat writer or news reporter, to speak of. His blog is basically for entertainment purposes only.
This is pretty spot on, and I say that as someone who really likes Steinberg's stuff. Though in this instance he isn't really trying to add anything anyways, just quoting Irvin because Skins fans will definitely find that quote noteworthy. I like the "for all you laymen" part.

I dunno about what he is saying though, tbh I am a Skins fan and if I had some life or death situation to pick someone to win the NFC East I'm pretty sure I would still take the Eagles. I am a fairly cynical fan and really like Chip though, so maybe that's why.

Remember when people said the Eagles trading McNabb to Washington was the dumbest trade in the history of the NFL?
What I remember more is that when the Skins traded Away McNabb the draft pick they got for him landed them Alfred Morris.

Eagles fans were split pretty evenly on whether cutting Jackson was the right move or not. I believe the poll results were something like 52% for and 48% against.

How long will the 52% feel the need to keep justifying cutting a guy who's already been cut?

Are guys in here really acting like a guy taking a vacation he already had planned before signing his new contract with a new team means something?

No. But you gotta admit the timing is pretty ironic.
I guess. But only teams with new coaches can start working out this early in April. He thought he'd be playing for the Eagles this year when he scheduled this vacation, and if that was the case it wouldn't be conflicting with anything right now.

Of course they are. Seemingly some people feel the need to spin every thing involving Jackson into the most negative light possible.

After being pegged as a selfish, me first player and released, some just may expect him to put the team first and put off a vacation.

Not you guys though :lmao:

I'm not going to pretend to know the details of how easy or difficult it may be for him to "put off the vacation". Just know that you sound pretty ridiculous right now.

After the ##### that was just written about him you can NOT have this written about you, period.

F'ing dude's a millionaire and can vacation all off-season if he wanted.
Obviously it's not a problem with him or the team--they knew before signing him.

For some reason, it's a problem for a select group of Eagles fans...wonder what the reason could be?

You don't seem to be pretending to think either.

He probably didn't have the money or the time off to take it on a different time.

JFC

##### canned for being me first. Gets paid and than does some me first ##### and there's people making excuses for him, unreal.

How long until the we hear the Eagles leaked this too?

And I'm sure no PR guy said "hey this may not be a good idea". What do you think his response was? :lmao:
