Miami Dolphins wide receiver DeVante Parker has remained healthy throughout the offseason and training camp, enjoys catching the football from new quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, and could be primed for a breakout season for the first time in his career if he can put it all together.
When Parker was asked Wednesday what could make this season a successful one, he did not shy away from setting a high bar for himself.
“A success for me? A thousand yards,” Parker said stoically.
Why?
“I haven’t done it yet,” Parker said.
Do you have what it takes?
“Yes,” he assured.
Parker, the Dolphins’ 2015 first-round pick, has received a bad reputation for being often injured during his career.
Just a season ago, Parker had three injuries (a broken finger, quadriceps strain and shoulder injury) that hampered his performance to the point he caught only 24 passes — two fewer than his rookie year.
Still, the Dolphins chose to re-sign Parker to a new deal that could last two years and pay him $13 million, instead of exercising the fifth-year option on his rookie contract that would have paid him $9.4 million for this season alone.
The Dolphins, led by general manager Chris Grier, believe Parker has untapped potential he has yet to reach. And the new Dolphins coaching staff, led by Brian Flores and new offensive coordinator Chad O’Shea, hope to uncover it.
“It’s been going pretty well for me,” Parker said encapsulating his training camp experience. “I’m just getting the hang of the offense, just studying, and coming out working every day.”
Parker has caught 163 passes for 2,217 yards with nine touchdowns in his first four seasons with the team, but has missed 11 games to various injuries.
The closest Parker has gotten to 1,000 receiving yards was during his second season in 2016 where he started eight games, played in 15 games overall, and caught 56 of his 87 targets for 744 yards with four touchdowns.
It was a strong follow to his rookie year, where he played in 15 games with four starts, catching 26 passes for 494 yards with three touchdowns.
While Parker was able to catch 57 passes in 2017, he amassed just 670 yards with one touchdown.
Parker also scored just one touchdown last season, finishing with 24 receptions for 309 yards.
After an offseason where he remained healthy, Parker hopes to hit his stride this season and reach his lofty goal with Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen at quarterback.
Parker has already developed an on-field rapport with Fitzpatrick during the offseason and through the first six training camp practices.
“It’s been great working with him,” Parker said of Fitzpatrick. “He puts the ball where it needs to be and we adjust to it. That’s a thing that he does [well]. … It gives us a chance to come down with it. He puts it where it needs to be and we have to make a play.”
As the Dolphins navigate training camp ahead of the 2019 season, Parker insists he does not view this season as one that could turn the tide on his career or define his NFL future.
“No, I don’t feel that way at all,” Parker said.
“I just want the coaches to know I can still play the game. That’s the biggest thing, and I think I’ve done that so far.”
No receiver (or even RB) hit 600 receiving yards last year. There's a long way to go to get to 1,000.
Curious why you say that. They did just sign him to a 2 year contract.I think he's done in Miami. Since it looks like they are trading Stills soon he'll probably stick on the roster this year and then be cut or traded.
Not trying to provide false hope (I think he is fully capable of 1K) Parker only started 7 games to hit 300matttyl said:No receiver (or even RB) hit 600 receiving yards last year. There's a long way to go to get to 1,000.
Was really a one year extension, but a decrease in dollars.Tool said:Curious why you say that. They did just sign him to a 2 year contract.
Not exactly. They hadn't yet exercised the option so he never had that first year on the books. Was really a one year extension, but a decrease in dollars.
You actually think he’ll be the qb for more than a couple of games? He’s terrible and they have to see if Rosen can play. With Fitz-magic throwing the rock in Miami, Parker could be primed for a big year.
Terrible players don’t last in the NFL 15+ years. You actually think he’ll be the qb for more than a couple of games? He’s terrible and they have to see if Rosen can play.
Terrible backup qbs that play on 7 different teams? Lol, Cutler played as a starter for a lot of years.Terrible players don’t last in the NFL 15+ years.
Ryan Fitzpatrick was a 7th round pick and has/will play 15-20 years. If nobody can come along and unseat you for decades, you have to be doing something right.voiceofunreason said:Terrible backup qbs that play on 7 different teams? Lol, Cutler played as a starter for a lot of years.
He's been unseated 6 times.Ryan Fitzpatrick was a 7th round pick and has/will play 15-20 years. If nobody can come along and unseat you for decades, you have to be doing something right.
contrary to popular belief there are a lot of mouths to feed in Miami. With Fitz-magic throwing the rock in Miami, Parker could be primed for a big year.
In the NFL, the average, run-of-the-mill player lasts 3 years, which ain’t too shabby. To last 15 years and be terrible? Come. On.He's been unseated 6 times.
In fairness, the bar for clipboard holder is just a degree north of terrible. Charlie Batch did it for how long?In the NFL, the average, run-of-the-mill player lasts 3 years, which ain’t too shabby. To last 15 years and be terrible? Come. On.
Charlie Batch attempted 1301 regular season passes to Fitz’s 4285 and counting. One is a clipboard holder, one is not.In fairness, the bar for clipboard holder is just a degree north of terrible. Charlie Batch did it for how long?
Don't pick him up then. Your loss.contrary to popular belief there are a lot of mouths to feed in Miami.
Life long Fins fan. I’d LOVE to be proved wrong.Don't pick him up then. Your loss.
Didn’t read much from above ... but are you team DeVante Parker?Don't pick him up then. Your loss.
I'm, um, starting him this weekend at WR3.Parker is a massive bust and any Dolphins fan thinking that all of a sudden in year 5 he is suddenly going to turn it around is delusional. He is soft, and not a professional. Does not take care of his body and breaks down every season. I still can't believe they extended him 2 years. But then again.....look at the last 20 years of this front office.
Pure garbage.
If they deal him to Houston as part of a package for Clowney.....awesome.
lol how’d that happen?I'm, um, starting him this weekend at WR3.![]()
Lol went RB heavy and Golden Tate is essentially my WR3. Other options are Coutee, Humphries, Marquise Brown.lol how’d that happen?
He’s still on my roster. But it’s a deep dynasty league.
I would start all three of these over him.Lol went RB heavy and Golden Tate is essentially my WR3. Other options are Coutee, Humphries, Marquise Brown.
I still believe! Lol..
Is Albert Wilson available? Fitzpatrick likes to throw to the slot and Wilson should primarily play from there. Wilson did decent last year before getting injured so he's not on a lot of people's radars (especially PPR).I'm, um, starting him this weekend at WR3.![]()
I own Parker in a few leagues, would trade him for Preston in all of them.I wonder who will be the fantasy difference maker. With all the "trade me rumblings" , there will be some doing what they can to score and play football.
The team might be tanking, but there will be points along the way.
Gotta wonder if it will be the Preston Williams show, or the long awaited DEVANTE PARKER arrival. I believe one of these will generatre some strong fantasy caliber numbers even though the team is in disarray.
I'd like to know who the group thinks is the one to own going forward. It seems the young guy looking to change his life with talent is Preston Williams, but DeVante Parker is a mystery. Always had the talent, but injuries, supposed lack of dedication, injuries, a bunch of things. Can he be the one going forward???
TZM
I have Preston in one league, and I badly need WR help. He LOOKS to be the real deal. But as of right now Parker got a slightly larger target share.I own Parker in a few leagues, would trade him for Preston in all of them.
He'll go lower (free)Ultimate buy low after playing against the Ravens?
DeVante Parker was targeted seven times but failed to catch a pass Sunday in Miami’s Week 2 loss to New England.
Parker had a chance to make a big play on a second-quarter deep bomb from Ryan Fitzpatrick, but J.C. Jackson swooped in to knock it loose at the last second. He was also the intended receiver on two of Ryan Fitzpatrick's three interceptions. This was always going to be a tough matchup for Parker—the Patriots haven't yielded a touchdown in their last three games going back to last season. But the goose egg still hurts, especially on a day where the Dolphins needed him to step up (Albert Wilson was shelved with a hip injury). The fifth-year underachiever won't be of any fantasy consequence when the Dolphins visit Jerry's World for a date against the high-powered Cowboys in Week 3.
DeVante Parker caught 5-of-10 targets for 55 yards and one touchdown in the Dolphins' Week 7 loss to the Bills.
Parker has scored in three straight games with a 12-153-3 line in that span. He's believed to be on the trade block ahead of the deadline later this month and is starting to pop a bit as a fantasy contributor. The floor is obviously extremely low in this vomit-inducing offense, but Parker will be on the WR4/5 map next week against the Steelers.
Has a TD in each of his last 3 games somehow.I think he has scored 2 weeks in a row now.
