WR Diontae Johnson, Free Agent (3 Viewers)

I don’t disagree with anyone in here. Because everyone’s armchair analysis is 100% spot on.

So I will laugh when he puts up the best numbers of his career from this point on as a true alpha WR1 in Baltimore.

It will be like 10,000 spoons, when all we needed was a knife.
I do think his end of year numbers may look pretty good (on a pro-rata basis for his time with the Ravens and the games with Dalton) but the variance and predictability is my main concern. We've already seen duds and big games from Likely/Andrews/Bateman so it seems natural it will be the same big variance for Diontae.

nteresting. I have NEVER heard anything like this about Johnson before, so this is very surprising news to me.
I'm seriously asking is this sarcasm?

In case it's not here is some stuff to reinforce what I'm saying.

He reportedly got into two arguments with Steelers players while on the team. Reportedly punched Trubisky at halftime which multiple people denied, but also some credible people said took place. Had another altercation with Minkah Fitzpatrick after a game he was not happy he was not used, was chirping so much in the lockeroom that Minkah came after him and had to be seperated by other teammates.

The Steeler's have been aggressive/desperate as any team in the league for WR help. They traded him for a small pick bump and a CB who has turned out to actually be pretty good but he was expected to be cut by Carolina if they did not trade him. So short story a team desperate for WR's gave him up for very little.

Here are some comments from article from The Athletic yesterday:

This first one does not speak to his attitude but does speak to how NFL teams feel about bringing in him:

After the Panthers made it known Johnson was available a couple of weeks ago, two teams called before their interest ultimately cooled, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Baltimore only recently started talking to Carolina about Johnson, who was held out of last week’s game at Denver with a rib issue.

And here are some other comments from that article:

The Panthers knew what they were getting in Johnson: A receiver who could separate from coverage but one with a history of pouting when he didn’t get the ball and dumping on his quarterbacks.

Johnson didn’t hide his displeasure with Young’s slow start.

My words here but the article goes on to say things got better for Diontae when they moved to Dalton, he was happy getting the ball, but then in his last game with the team ran a wrong route which resulted in an INT by Dalton who threw his helmet down on the sideline over it.

This is Diontae's response to that, from the article(and fwiw I referenced this in an earlier post, this is when I knew he was gone):

Afterward, Johnson took no responsibility for the interception while casting blame elsewhere.

“I mean, frustrated,” Johnson said, “but I can’t play every position on the field and make every play. Everybody’s gotta do their job, when it comes down to it.”

That's it from the article, everything else is my words.

I read some stuff yesterday from a Panthers beat writer that they were ready to move on from him after week 2.

Being a Diva WR is not unique but he's got a real way of getting on people's nerves. There is a correleation of how much of a diva can you be vs how good you are and he's not in proportion in that regard, and I say that as someone who recognized that he's actually pretty elite at seperation.

Carolina literally gave him away for nothing. THAT's the best they could have done? Hard to believe.
It was really close to free. Because of the comp picks at end of round 3 it's projected to be in range of 15-20 pick improvement. Giving him for that AND eating most of his salary was mind boggling.

All I kept reading yesterday was that the whole league knew Carolina was done with Diontae and that made the rest of the league play hardball. That's still hard for me to grasp how Carolina could not get a better offer because if you are a team that wanted him and Carolina tells you to "beat this" it's not hard.
This seems like Diontae made it known he wasn't going to sign next year with the Panthers. I read there was some communication issues but nothing detailed. My guess is the players knew his intentions, players talk, news travels and then Carolina lost leverage. I also read his salary due this year was lower than more high profiled WR free agents. He had a history of getting into it with teammates at Pittsburgh and coaches that could have lowered his value to some teams. Carolina probably needs as many draft picks as possible to cover their own misses in the draft.

I’m just guessing he’ll behave himself in Baltimore. Hopefully before the 👑 and Lamar have to talk to him.

:goodposting:

Johnson's attitude may have been a factor in CAR getting so little in a trade.

Should be interesting to see what happens.

Oh you had much more information than I knew. I didn't know of the alleged punch and that Dalton backstory. I did know the other Pittsburgh stuff. Once I saw he was out for a groin then he played I figured he was already on the trade block. Those diva acts will not work in Baltimore, he knows he is may not be option 1 or get the high targets but he has a chance to compete for a championship

Before he was traded to Carolina it's turned into a bit of a recurring joke that Pittsburgh is great at identifying and drafting WR's but for some reason they all turn out to be headcases and diva's. It's a bit of an oversimplification but Pitt is constantly cycling thru WR's since Brown, Juju, James Washington, Claypool, Diontae... made me avoid Pickens a little bit in rookie drafts to be honest.

Yes and I'm a Steelers fan, one of the reasons I was not in favor of them going after Aiyuk and I think it's been a competitive advantage that they are able to get draft day discounts and production from a group of players that are likely dinged or outright removed from other teams boards for character issues.

Actually think Tomlin deserves a lot of credit for mainly keeping them on point when they are Steelers. Look how fast some of them unraveled when they got away. They are not all success stories but most and it seems right now he's doing a great job with Pickens but even Tomlin sounds like he's struggling to reach Roman Wilson.

Seriously, I did NOT know any of that but I don't pay attention to Steeler news that much.

Thanks for updating me, though!

One more post for me on Diontae.

Read a few Ravens beat writers thought late last night and they seemed to think he's the WR3 on the team. More of a weapon, might be used on punt returns, but they seemed to think Bateman would remain the number 2.

I will not be surprised if he's cut before the end of the season.

His attitude rubs people the wrong way, one of the reasons Carolina wanted him off the team ASAP. That attitude gets worse when he does not think he's getting the ball. Off the top of my head I can't recall a pass catcher on the Ravens showing really bad body language over not getting the ball or don't get an accurate pass thrown their way when Lamar is the QB, he seems to have to much respect by them to entertain trying to show him up. This may have occured and I missed it, just don't recall it but Diontae does this ALL the time. Now some of them have wanted out over lack of usage, like Hollywood and the Ravens have said a few times in the past they know they have to draft WR's and overpay in FA because the lack of volume is a turnoff for some FA Wr's they've wanted to attract. How much if any that changed after Roman left I don't know but the whole thing could be really volatile, especially if he starts his on field moping.

Diontae does not appear to be overly loved by NFL teams and he's about to be a FA. The smart thing for him to do is be a good solider, play whatever role they ask, maybe even win a ring and hit FA. But I don't think he can help himself. I heard some comments from him back in camp about trying to be better, not complain so much, etc, etc. Lasted about two weeks into the season.
Doesn't make much sense to bring him and his baggage on board to an offense running well if you're not going to use him a lot. Actually makes zero sense and Baltimore is one of the smartest organizations in the league.

No. He's not only close to free but might actually be a win for Ravens on draft capital. That means you could say the same thing about every single player the Ravens sign. Be it a scrap heap FA or Diontae.

Doesn't matter if he's free, you don't bring in a known disruptor to hang out on the bench and cause problems. Not that tough to figure out.

He's cheap depth they think they can manage. That's all this is.

I think it’s the end of Likely playing the slot. I also think that Flowers targets take a hit. Basically it hurts all the pass catcher’s value.

I can’t imagine Diontae sit the bench.

BAL is a team that would/could hit square peg Dionte into their round hole.

In real football, it's a win for the team. Dionte will make them a better team.

In Fantasy Football, it hurts everyone but Lamar and Henry.

I think this is getting so overthought. Diontae will produce fine in Baltimore. The cut in targets will be made it up with being in a quality system with an elite QB. No it's not a home run landing spot but people are sounding like he should be dropped or something. Relax guys.

Let's see how this plays out.

I feel pretty strongly he'll be the WR3 on a team that runs less 3 WR sets then any team in the league and I don't see that changing.

They are not disupting what is working. They saw a cheap chance to upgrade their WR3. This is what it is.

You all need to accept the new reality. He was on the trade block and they almost had to give him away. Carolina would have probably cut him if they could not find a trade. I'm a fan of the player and invested in him but this is what he is now.

I've got the DJ owner knocking on my door for my ETN. Maybe I shouldn't have stated so loudly and clearly at a party last weekend that I would trade ETN away for a bag of peanuts, but well... I think DJ is a bag of peanuts.

Seldom does the diva WR traded for pennies become something special. In redraft, I'm not touching the situation. He'll be on the wire in the leagues I play in before too long anyways.

Great points. The NFL usually tells us what they think of a player through their acts. Maybe he is just depth.

I just want to say I think he's way better then Bateman. It's not impossible he passes him but I think he'll need to be way better, make it impossible with his play because I don't think it's what they want to do. Just don't think they want to disrupt the core of what is working now.

your certainty makes me think the opposite could very well be true.

I hate this trade as a Dionte owner. Was hoping maybe Dallas, Houston or TB. Anything can happen but I’d be shocked if he can do as well as he did in Carolina

Thing is, he was fine in PBurg with BB. Like way fine. I think he diva’d because of the Pickett love. He knows he has 5-6 years to make $$.

So they trade to Carolina and …

I hate that he’s a rat bird but I won’t be surprised if he shines brightly at times. I don’t fault him much not wasting time with KP or BY. Deadbeat boss, nope,
.

Or he actually is just a ***** but we shall see. He should compete with Zay for #1 targets. If not he’s bustish for them.
As they both are immature Andrews could benefit

Nope. He will play a lot. But keep replying to every post, you can't seem to resist not doing so. This is a common theme to your presence on these boards, you think very highly of yourself for sure.

I wouldn’t drop a guy after a short week on a new offense.

He’s still a hold for me for a couple weeks while we see how this shakes out.

They dominated this game and there was no need to force DJ into the gameplan.

The problem is that they do dominate most weeks. So how much can you rely on at best the second receiving option on a run heavy team that crushes everybody? It’s not a bet I’d be interested in making.

Yeah, I'm not dropping him either. Nothing on the WW to replace him with anyways.

Does anyone believe?

He’s so low on most reason of season rankings. Maybe for good reason. But a lot of judgement off one game.

Why can’t he be a comparable to Jordan Addison or a nice WR2?

One one hand I want to drop him for someone in a better situation… but on the other hand I also want to at least hold through tomorrow to make sure I’m not cutting bait before acclimation into the offense.

Every league is different. I dropped in redraft

Yeah, he was on waivers in my redraft league and is STILL available. Maybe somebody adds him before kick-off but it doesn't feel that way.

I still think they signed DJ to keep him away from Houston. He's a nice add to your WR group if you're BAL, but would have filled a need in HOU.

I'm going to hold on to him for ~2-3 weeks and see if he can carve out a role on this O. We saw Hopkins take time to gel and now looks super comfortable. I don't think Diontae will reach that level of production but I think he is a better WR than Bateman and with Likely out, who knows.

If I knew Johnson would lead his team in wr targets like Hopkins is about to then id agree with u.
