WR Jameson Williams, DET (5 Viewers)

Just a report, people.

Sources: Lions WR Jameson Williams facing 2-game suspension

  • Eric Woodyard, ESPNOct 21, 2024, 10:49 PM ET784
DETROIT -- The bumpy start to the career of Jameson Williams continues as the Detroit Lions wide receiver is facing a two-game suspension for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing substances (PES) policy, sources told ESPN on Monday night.
Williams, 23, currently has the team's second-most receiving yards (361) and touchdowns (3) behind All-Pro WR Amon-Ra St. Brown and was off to a strong start in his third season.
The Lions (5-1) are coming off a thrilling 31-29 win over Minnesota in Week 7, but Williams was only targeted once for minus-4 yards.
As the No. 12 overall pick out of Alabama in 2022, Williams' NFL career has kicked off in a non-ideal manner. He missed the first 11 games of his rookie season due to an ACL injury that he suffered in college then was suspended four games for violating the NFL's gambling policy in Year 2.
The gambling suspension was originally set for six games, for mobile betting on non-NFL games from a club facility, but later reduced to four games after the NFL changed the rules. He was reinstated in 2023.
Williams is disappointed with the current suspension but says he has "no choice but to take it on the chin."

Yes, that's the report.

Oh, Jamo again? Seems like a good kid. Too many infractions with the powers-that-be.

What is he doing? He needs professional staff advising him and overseeing him. Where are the Lions on this? Why isn't every bit of their investment being micromanaged by themselves? Gotta wonder about the decision to give this guy a lot of autonomy. Just seems like a wayward kid at times.

I’m getting pounded with injuries and now this lol. I’m in **** it mode this morning

I'm getting pounded with sobriety and doing dumb ****, too. Also in **** it mode this morning, but I don't think I'll be unsober by nightfall, so I think I'm stuck here.

My fantasy teams long ago hit the ****ter. Well, one is 5-2 and in second overall, but it's a long, tall drink of cards from the house on down. Yes, I mixed my metaphors. I'm selling off Demario Douglas for FAAB in a dynasty league. Lest people think I don't know what I'm doing, I do. I'm going all gas no brakes in honor of Fired Robert Saleh and my New York Jets, who seem to think signing 31 year-old EDGE rushers while 2-4 sounds like a futuristic build.

I'm sober, dammit. Haven't had a drink in five years but never have I been so aggravatingly sober. Up all night and here we are at 4:50 A.M. waiting for Godot or something like it. I need a miracle!

Sleeper alert: Jameson facing two game suspension for performance enhancing drugs.
Is that Sam LaPorta's music?
yes it is
Well, at least I don’t have to trot him out there every week now
exactly. I seriously took a small sigh of relief when I heard the news. Hurts me in best ball but 2 games isn't so horrible. The other news I *heard* is that he was contrite and owned up to it. After he got caught of course but at least that is something.

half the league is juicing on something or another but you're supposed to be smart enough to not get caught.

Good luck with all of that. Truly.

If it makes you feel any better I'm absolutely killing it through 7 weeks across my portfolio. That probably cheers you right up. (NYC family vacation is close to next on my list of things to spend my opponents money on BTW). I had some of my highest scores of the season and I think all of them either took a 0 from Juju, Deebo, 0.8 from Jameson, or Aiyuk. A couple of my high scores had Flowers and his ~3 pts. Weird stuff. But for my fantasy teams to thrive I'm going to continue to need you to make your sacrifice for me. Appreciate it.

Ok so in truth though the WR position has been killed so far and I don't know how I've made it through. I talk about luck and skill in this hobby there has been some really good luck so far for me in terms of avoiding landmines. Not completely by any means a couple squads got obliterated. But there are some job opportunities across the NFL that are open at WR and the wire should be fun once again. Glad I picked up Tillman last week for free in a couple spots for example.

2 games seems short for PEDs. I thought it was longer? Does this mean he technically took something he shouldn't of and is on the banned substance list, but more of a stupid mistake supplement versus a true PED?

still waiting for real news on this, but there was speculation that because he owned right up to it and didn't try to lie or obscure the truth or whatever that there is some lenience baked in - but seriously that's just me sharing speculation again - there are folks in here that can speak on it - does the NFL have a mandated min # of games on this?

My wild guess is it was seen as an honest mistake by the league, and he owned up to it right away.

So he pisses hot, the league notifies, his agent says, whaaa? League says what supplements has he been taking? They figure out what the bad supplement is, he says my bad, NFL says yo, all good brah, but rules are rules, we gotta ding you, but we will go easy on you. Jamo says kewl

I'm surprised there isn't a higher penalty for PEDs. If you were the type of person who could rationalize cheating, a 2-game suspension could be well worth the risk.

Players in the NFL are all terrific athletes. The difference between mediocre players and the elite isn't as much as you think (as far as raw ability). Gaining several percentage points of performance could make a huge difference. I've experimented with SARMs like Ligandrol (LGD-4033), Testolone (RAD140), and Ostarine (which is what Taylor Lewan got popped for). SARMs increase performance and they do it quickly. All my lifts went up 20% or so within a couple months and that was with a short cycle and not combining anything. SARMs aren't illegal, but it's harder to find legit stuff now as compared to when I took them, but with the right connections and money (which NFL players have), it can easily be done.

The penalty should be MUCH harsher. If nothing else, to protect the integrity of the game. The NFL is too worried about deflating balls and such. 2 games for PED use is a joke.

There is no such thing as an honest mistake with PED's, the league is just very lenient punishment for early offenders.

I thought two games seemed wayyy too short, and that it really should just be a lifetime ban on first offense, but then I figured it would be a bit much, because some sicko could orchestrate a setup to oust anyone from the league.

NFL adopted a new PED policy last year, 2 games means he tested positive for a stimulant, masking agent or diuretic. 6 games means something anabolic, 8 games if positive for both.

So this could be a nothing burger... But any time a speedster guy gets busted for PEDs they are pretty much off my draft list from that point on.

There definitely needs to be an adjustment upwards. You're just inviting the use of PEDs with the current system. I don't think most people realize just how well many of the PEDs work.

If they tested everyone right now, I have a feeling the results would be rather surprising and part of the reason for that would be the light punishment to upside ratio. Right now, it's a 'woops, my bad' type of slap on the wrist penalty.

BTW, 2 games for masking agents and diuretics doesn't make any sense. Again, just inviting PED use.

I would agree if I didn't understand how inexact a lot of this testing is. Particularly urine testing, but blood testing also has many flaws and waste product analogues that present similarly, if not exactly as their PED counterparts. There is a reason the NFL has an extensive list of banned, legal supplements and it's not because they are actually performance enhancing. It's because of what they turn into when they breakdown and exit your system.

Thanks, barackdhouse.

I does make me feel a bit better. I find that when other people have success around here that I am edified. Seriously speaking. Good luck with your portfolio. Love to see your commentary throughout the year on these boards. I pay attention to it.

I don't know what I'm doing in a Jamo thread talking about how my teams stink and about sobriety. I should suck that up and quit complaining. One team is very good but not quite built for posterity, and the other team stinks. So what, bub? Tell it to the world. My apologies.

I guess I'm just trying to figure out FAAB by nightfall. So I sold Demario Douglas with not enough solid WRs. I don't believe in him, so why not?

Good luck to all the Lions fans and everybody with Jamo.

Peace.

He's saying his unnamed sources are telling him Jamo has a prescription for Adderall, which is on the list.
Seems like that for something that has a legit reason (i am assuming it is a legit reason) should be able to have a waiver of some kind or some way to be allowed if legit.

(I know nothing about Adderall or why it is banned so maybe I am way off base. But in general I don't think anything you take legally should be disallowed)

This guy doesn't have a big following, but he's had a bunch of Lions on his videos. He's saying his unnamed sources are telling him Jamo has a prescription for Adderall, which is on the list. That would explain the light suspension and certainly makes me feel a lot better about him as a person. https://youtu.be/HN8RDu34RC0?si=UvZFS83zsNLz7NA0

Jeff Risdon runs that channel. He’s legit.

Commutes all the way across the state to cover the Lions. Generally well sourced, he goes to the combine, 8-10 days at TC, has been writing for low budget mastheads for over a decade. One of those valuable part-timers who sometimes has a scoop.

Adderall is usually prescribed to treat ADHD or narcolepsy. It’s listed as a PES (substance), which is different than getting popped for a listed PED. It can improve alertness, energy level, etc. It’s dose specific, e.g., different effects from different levels.

2 games may indicate he didn’t get a therapeutic exemption for a prescription medication. If it was steroids it would likely be at least 4 games.

But literally no one (Jamo, the team, his agent) can discuss it prior to the suspension being announced; that’s in the CBA. All we can do is guess for now.

He’s appealing.

Richard Sherman won a similar case ten years. Every other appeal for banned substances has failed but guess it doesn’t hurt to try it.

Lions prepared either way with Jameson Williams' suspension on hold pending decision to appeal
OCT 23

Allen Park — The reported two-game suspension incurred by Jameson Williams for violating the league's performance-enhancing substance policy is temporarily on hold pending the player’s decision to appeal.

Williams was informed of the punishment earlier in the week and has five days to decide whether to accept the ban or appeal the league’s decision. In the meantime, he was on the practice field on Wednesday.

Regardless of the direction he decides to go, the Lions are prepared to be without him this week against Tennessee.

“We’re prepared not to have him and it’s all good,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said. “He’s going to be here, he’s helping. Until they come through with whatever’s going to happen, he’s with us, he’s part of this team, he’s helping out, and we’re good.

“…I think step one is what he’s doing right now,” Campbell said. “He’s here and he’s helping, and if he’s not able to go, then he’ll be helping on scout team, which is awesome.”

The Lions opened the season light on receivers, carrying just four on the 53-man roster, but they’re currently up to six following the additions of veterans Tim Patrick and Allen Robinson. Patrick has carved out a significant role in Detroit’s offense the past few weeks, while Robinson has seen just 10 snaps thus far. But the latter is expected to get a significant bump in work when (or if) Williams serves his suspension.

“We just went through the walkthrough, I mean, he’s going to take on a heavy load here, too,” Campbell said. “Talk about a pro, man, I mean, he’s locked in. Everything we just went through, I mean, it’s meticulous, which fires you up. So, we’re going to be good here.”

Because the suspension has yet to be announced by the league, pending the decision to appeal, Campbell was initially reluctant to comment on it Wednesday before providing a broader assessment of how Williams is perceived in the building.

“Here’s what I can tell you is I trust this kid,” Campbell said. “I trust him, and, unfortunately, you’ve got to pay for your sins. Something happens and if this comes down, then so be it, but I know this, we dangled the rope down on the way up. We can’t wait for anybody, and over a year ago he started climbing his way up and he got to us, and maybe he lost his grip, but he’ll climb back up again."

Campbell's analogy of climbing out of the hole was in clear reference to Williams' 2023 suspension for violating the league's gambling policy.

“That rope’s still there, it’s tied to us, and he’ll be just fine,” Campbell said. “He's part of this team and I trust him. …He and I have enough dialogue, enough things that have happened, I know when he tells me something, I know what it is, and that’s the best way I can say it. And so, look, this happened, it is what it is, and move on. But I do, and he’s put the work in, and he’s put his best foot forward and, like I say, he lost his grip. He’ll be back.”

Campbell also said he believes Williams has a strong support network around him with the Lions.

“I feel like he’s around his teammates a ton, and I feel like he’s really endeared himself to the guys and, like I say, he’s part of the group,” Campbell said. “I’m telling (you), he’s matured so much.

“And I get it, I understand where it’s at, and I know it can be frustrating,” Campbell continued. “Look, it’s frustrating for us. It’s frustrating because I’ve got to answer these questions and the team is going to have to answer them when they shouldn’t have to, but ultimately, he’s taken huge strides, he’s made huge strides and I recognize that, and I think the team recognizes that, so I think he’s going to come back better than he was before.”
