This guy seems like a huge value right now. Seems like you can get him for nothing, he has a clear path to a starting role, and 2nd round draft capital.
And a QB with a big arm! This guy seems like a huge value right now. Seems like you can get him for nothing, he has a clear path to a starting role, and 2nd round draft capital.
I have him as a hold right now. His usage is still suspect with Nico Collins and 31 yo Robert Woods ahead of him on pecking order (currently)Is Metchie going to amount to anything this year in a 12 teamer?
Texans WR John Metchie (hamstring) did not practice Wednesday.
Metchie suffered a hamstring injury early in the offseason but was cleared ahead of training camp. It looks like he may have re-aggravated the issue, though it’s possible the two injuries are unrelated. Either way, a DNP to open the week puts him on the wrong side of questionable for now. With a limited number of practice reps under his belt, Metchie will be stuck behind Nico Collins and Noah Brown on Houston’s depth chart to open the year.
John Metchie (hamstring) was limited in Thursday’s practice.
Metchie has been limited in each of the Texans’ first two practices to open the week, and could be trending toward making his NFL debut in Week 2 against the Texans. It’s possible Metchie is listed as the team’s starting slot receiver on the unofficial depth chart, and could be in line for immediate playing time with Noah Brown now on injured reserve. Brown led all Texans with 29 snaps from the slot last week.
I've got him as my WR9 on a 25 man dynasty roster. Bought him for a future 4th + Kyle Philips during cutdowns this past offseason, and I'm fine if I end up holding him all year just to see. We don't have taxi squads in my league but that'd be where I'd have him if we did. If something were to magically appear on the wire he'd likely be my first cut candidate but waivers are bare anyway (Demercado is gone, for example) so I'm fine holding and seeing how the Houston WR depth chart ends up shaking out. What does everyone think, can we cut him in deep dynasty leagues? I assume everyone else has already cut bait.
He has draft capital on his side but seems to be buried on the depth chart.
I would be looking to pick up Emari Demercado, RB 3 for the cardinals if i cut Metchie.

I still like Metchie for deep dynasty leagues but it may not happen for him this year. Think of him as the long-term replacement for Woods. What does everyone think, can we cut him in deep dynasty leagues? I assume everyone else has already cut bait.

But the former second-round pick is still shaking off some rust as he prepares for the 2023 season, which general manager Nick Caserio acknowledged this week.
“He’s worked really hard. I’d say he also looks like a player who hasn’t played football in 18 months, so when you miss that amount of time it just sometimes takes maybe a little bit longer," Caserio admitted.
...
"It’s a great story like no question about it, but okay now there has to be some kind of tangible football production behind it," Caserio said. "I would say a player like that, there is probably a chance that he’s going to be a little bit better six to eight weeks down the road than maybe he is now."
Seems like Metchie is the odd man out in Houston now with Noah Brown's emergence. I'd hoped for him to be the Robert Woods replacement but looks like it'll be Tank, Nico, and Noah going forward and Schultz is performing well at TE. I've been holding Metchie (even traded a late pick for him) in a 25 roster spot dynasty team, but I think if anything else emerges on the wire or someone gets dropped I want, Metchie is holding that last bench spot and would be my first cut.
Very disappointing. I know what happened last season, and maybe this first year back is a lost season, but I had high hopes for him. He has the pedigree.
Ended up acquiring Jakobi Meyers so Metchie is odd man out and had to make a cut. Might be able to get him back off waivers but if I can't then I wish him godspeed.Seems like Metchie is the odd man out in Houston now with Noah Brown's emergence. anyone looking at him now?
Pretty stacked at WR and have Mixon and Schultz who will get touches, I would say no.Does Metchie have any dynasty value moving forward? He's buried on the Texans depth chart and likely won't see the field barring an injury to a starter.
I’ll like him a lot more after Stefon Diggs is gone.1 for 4 in the HoF game, and 1 for 7 in the second game last night.
Giants without a doubt have the worst secondary on the league. Take that into account as well.Looks pretty good today with Keenum and 2nd unit. Getting open pretty regularly. Texans have some good receivers who might have to be cut. Beat Isaiah Simmons on a quick out from the slot for a short TD.
Signs of life!
The OL is such a massive problem for me to get my hopes up for any other WR besides Nico and maybe Dell at times. Slowik is nowhere near good enough as a play-caller to creatively make Metchie a thing either. Seems as if they're going to mix in Hutchinson, Woods, and Metchie. They'll all just cannibalize each other with their one or two catch games. Stroud is also getting worse each game as the failures of the OL affect his play. This will be the cheapest Metchie is the rest of the season IMHO. He's looked good tonight. Crisp routes and open on several occasions. He could be the perfect slot WR for this team moving forward, and if he is, that means more than a little for fantasy.
Stroud has flat missed him on two big plays tonight, one which would have been the go ahead TD. I really like what I see and I'm sure he and Stroud will get on the same page with a little practice time. Remember, Diggs went down on Sunday. This game is on Thursday with little to no real practice time. Metchie has been buried on the depth chart, that's no longer the case. A little practice with the 1s could make all the difference here.
Ok, you posted worst case scenario. I posted the best. Great call!Starting

Probably doesn't help that Stroud missed Dell on a wide open pass to the endzone that he was late on.Curious if he may have staying power even with Nico back.
T. Dell just doesn't seem to be taking advantage of Nico's absence.

The John Metchie drive before the half was impressive - terrific routes by Metch and Schultz & the throws by Stroud![]()
Metchie finished w 5 catches, 74 yards and a TD

1. Shoutout John Metchie. Incredible to see him battle back after missing his rookie year with leukemia. Really happy to see this
2. His emergence as a reliable 2nd/3rd WR will be absolutely critical for the Texans playoff run. Hope he can keep this up
If he can slide into the slot role Diggs was occupying, then the answer is a resounding yes. Playing the slot in this offense with Nico and Dell taking so much coverage on the outside, his production might even improve. Houston still seems to love Hutchinson's blocking and Woods' experience, but Metchie showed out last night when given the opportunity. I tried to tell everyone he looked great the week prior as well, even with zero catches. Production or lack thereof doesn't always tell the whole story. He was running crisp routes and getting open. Did the same last night. It was a short week last TNF though, and he's been 5th or 6th on the depth chart so expecting him and Stroud to be on the same page that week was probably asking too much. Still, a lot needs to happen for him to be a viable NFL/fantasy starter, but yesterday was a huge step forward for this guy.Curious if he may have staying power even with Nico back.

Lol was just thinking the same thing.Picked him up and dropped AD Mitchell with the news of Arich being back.
Maybe you are unfamiliar with this kids history (these past 2 season specifically - ACL & Leukemia) ... But this is a strong start for him to return to his potential, granted in a supplemental role.I'm happy for Metchie but afraid this is just a one off event. He's had two seasons to produce and pretty pathetic this is his first time sniffing the end zone. I'm really going to need some consistency before I crown him as a WR3.

Could be a one off event. Then again, that's a lot to overcome. It could also be he's finally over the hump and ready to roll. The Diggs role is there for the taking.Maybe you are unfamiliar with this kids history (these past 2 season specifically - ACL & Leukemia) ... I'm well aware. Tore ACL in 2021 @ Alabama and sat out 2022 NFL season due to leukemia. He been playing the past two seasons my guy.
Thanks for this great analysis.
