So maybe he is one of the best cover corners even if nobody is talking about it........yetJeff Okudah has mostly covered DeVonta Smith, Terry McLaurin and Justin Jefferson this season.
TBF McLaurin had 53 yards VS the Lions zone coverage. Per Mike Clay, none of Jefferson’s three catches yesterday came when Okudah was the nearest DB.
- Smith: 0 yards vs. Lions, 249 yards in 2 other games.
- McLaurin: 2-22 yards vs. Okudah, 160 yards in 2 other games.
- Jefferson: 3-14 yards vs. Lions, 232 yards in 2 other games.
Except he’s never going to be a great coverage CB; that’s not his game. He’s a very strong & physical corner who jams at the line and throws guys off stride.
Very good run defender as well.
Might just seem like semantics to some, but to me a great cover corner is a speedster like Slay who can stay stride for stride with any burner. You can leave those guys in an island for the most part.
Okudah is very effective but he needs help over the top from the safety. Not a knock on him, just I think it’s important to understand different coverage styles. Some receivers struggle without a free release.
