WR Keenan Allen, Free Agent (5 Viewers)

@32BeatWriters
"I didn't think I was going to be targeted a lot," Allen said with a laugh. "Going through the week it was still frustrating, obviously, because things happen. Plays don't play out like they do.

"So we talked about it again on the sideline. [Offensive coordinator] Shane [Waldron] had that red zone drive where I did score the first touchdown, he kept coming to me back to back to back, three plays in a row he came to me."

I never thought i would ask, but... droppable?
its getting close to that point, but I'd hold for a little while longer. but it is getting to a point where you can only have a dead spot on your roster for so long. I get that. and if you are on the cusp of making the playoff, you may not be in a position to hold.

if that is the case for you......its a tough call.....

Hard to know which WR will get targeted week to week. Odunze had a good week and he was dropped in my league last week. It could be DJ, Keenan, or Odunze next week. Who knows?

I'd drop Allen. He is getting the targets, but 1/3 of those throws are ugly and Allen is dropping a lot of passes this year. Bears HAVE TO get Kmet involved. Once they do I think Allen is the odd man out.

well, it was obvious from day one that they have too many mouths to feed there. Caleb isnt at a point where he can support 3 top WR and a top TE.

and Odunze is the future. he was drafted to grow up with Caleb. Likely once Odunze is more of a proven commodity Keenan Allen is a lot more likely to go on the block.

I do think if Allen gets healthy he can be productive, but that has always been his issue. dude cant stay healthy enough. if feels like for every year hes healthy there are 2 where he isnt. Hes now at an age where the health thing becomes more important because you just dont recover from injury the same at the age 29 or 30 as compared to the age 25

Allen is dropping a lot of passes this year

According to PFF, he has 2 drops on 38 targets. Not sure that qualifies as "a lot".
That seems too low. He had two just this weekend, although I think one was waived off because he committed OPI.

Per PFF, he has caught 5 of 8 contested catches. Maybe you are thinking of those 3 contested catches he did not catch... but those are not drops.

ETA: PFR has him with 1 drop on 42 targets.

I'll admit I may have overstated that he is dropping a lot. He for sure dropped what would have been Caleb's first TD pass week 1. And had two passes bounce off him this weekend. There have been multiple times this season he didn't come down with a ball that Elite WRs should. As a Bears fan, I'd love for him to bounce back to elite status, but he's an aging possession receiver that the team is having trouble getting going.

Thats not to put it all on Allen either. QB play has been up and down and the OC is pretty horrible.

Allen is a decent safety valve, but indeed aging. Odunze is starting to produce and maybe figuring things out - wouldn't surprise me to see Caleb start to target Rome more at the expense of Keenan.

It’s gonna depend on price, but I’m afraid I have to admit something.

I’m coming back around on Keenan Allen.

He’s been an effective weapon for the #Bears as Caleb Williams has come into his own these last few weeks. At the right value, I’d consider bringing him back.

Any update on why he missed practice? Rest/Vet day or something more with the ankle. Odd as he played a week ago on Thursday.

(Rotowire) Allen didn't practice Wednesday due to an ankle injury. Analysis: Allen was among three key Bears skill-position players -- also, fellow WR DJ Moore (quadriceps) and RB D'Andre Swift (quadriceps) -- that didn't log any work to begin Week 14 prep. Allen rolled his ankle during a Nov. 22 practice, so his absence Wednesday may be maintenance related. Still, his status will be monitored as the week goes on to determine whether his availability for Sunday's game at San Francisco may be in question.

Here's an idea: How come no one has talked about him signing with KC? I mean, with Rashee Rice about to be suspended, Keenan Allen would make a great replacement. He would be playing the same role for the Chiefs that DeAndre Hopkins did for them last year. Besides, he knows the AFC West better than anyone. Does anybody see the connection of Mahomes-to-Allen happening anytime this season?

its an age/money thing. there's probably 12 teams that would hire Allen if the money suited them.

A little surprised not back w/ Chicago, guess there's no room for him but seemed like he and Caleb had a good connection and would be a nice security blanket

Then aren't the Chiefs one of those teams that have the cap space to sign him?

Allen, at this age, is counter to the scheme that Ben Johnson wants. He's collected a group of fast WRs. Allen would just get in the way and be an unnecessary safety blanket for Caleb.

A reunion with the Chargers would make some sense, especially after the Mike Williams reunion didn't work out. We know he's got an excellent rapport with Herbert, and contrary to what some may think, I don't think it'd be overlapping skill sets with McConkey.

I agree he would improve the Chargers WR group, and I agree that he could co-exist just fine with McConkey. Both of them can excel at Z as well as in the slot.

The real issue for the Chargers is they signed Williams to play X, and Allen isn't well suited for that role at this stage of his career. If they sign Allen, Johnston probably gets pushed back to X instead of moving to Z this season. His skill set is much better suited to Z.

Right now, the Chargers 3 WR set on third downs is generally going to be X Harris, Z Johnston, slot McConkey. IMO substituting Allen for Johnston would be an upgrade.

It would also be great if such a reunion led to Allen finishing his career with the Chargers, since he spent so much of his career with the team.

I dunno man. Allen lined up a bunch at the Z with Chicago and was painfully slow, to the point that he drug out the plays longer than necessary at times.

I honestly wonder if McConkey could see some X snaps if Harris isn't ready to go, at least in 2-wide sets. But a X-McConkey, Z-Johnston, Slot-Allen setup feels like an upgrade to me, as does a X-Johnston, Z-McConkey, Slot-Allen setup, even if it may not be playing everyone to their best spot.

I'm just really not a Harris guy (at least in 2025) especially given how late he signed given the offense he's coming from. I feel like he's ideally the #4 this year, but there currently isn't really another option. If forced to be relied upon early, I think his rookie year might not be too different than Johnston's.

Would love to see Allen finish his career as a Charger. His one of my favorites of the last 20 years, and even as a Bears fan, it felt wrong last year.

Does Allen even want to play? Does he think his value is still what it was 3 years ago and he’s being stubborn about money? Or this just a vet waiting for training camp to end?

I hope he's done. I'd rather see the player he would replace. Out with the old, in with the new.

I have no questions about Allen's hands and ability to get open. Even if he's lost a lot of speed/quickness as you say.

But the HC may want other players running those routes. They need to grow and develop. Allen isn't the future of this team.

I think Allen has plenty of suitors for his services. Maybe that's in a more limited role now but I think he's still reliable.

Patriots could use him.

Bah. Keenan Allen isn't that old. He is younger than Tet McMillan and Malik Nabers combined!

Yes, put me out to pasture as well, I’m ready.

The 2 teams that make the most sense to me are the Chargers and the Steelers. 2 teams that think they are contenders, that also have a lot of question marks beyond their #1 WR. Chargers make more sense given rapport with Herbert.

Allen probably played the worst football of his career last season, coinciding with arguably the worst QB play he's seen (not a knock on Caleb, but Allen has had Rivers/Herbert) but I think he's still capable of being a useful starter.

Kind of surprised they didn't sign him instead of Diggs. Only about a year and a half older and not coming off an ACL injury. No history (that I know of anyway) of drama. Diggs seems a short term answer in NE anyway.

I still think he ends up back with the Chargers. Need another safe option outside of Ladd until Harris or Big Quint develop.
