A couple of things to talk about here. I usually have this out earlier, but I decided to change how I write this to see what people think. There are no more "Sleeper Alerts," and scores of the games. However, I've added the pass defense ranking of each team, and players to "Exploit" and players to "Avoid." I've also got a top five WR to Exploit, and a top five to Avoid.
Below is the color code:
Red is Avoid
Green is Exploit
So without any further ado, let's dig into some WR analysis. Hope you guys enjoy!
Tampa Bay @ Atlanta:
TB: Ranked 3rd in pass defense
ATL: Ranked 11th in pass defense
Joey Galloway/Hilliard: Joey is very quietly having solid season, and Garcia loves looking towards him. I can see at least one TD this weekend to go along with 80+ yards receiving. I can see Hilliard though having a good game with Joey getting some much attention. Hilliard has been solid all year long from the WR2 position and should provide WR3 numbers for owners this weekend.
Exploit: Ike Hilliard – 8 catches 80+ yards, TD
White/Crumpler: White received a team high 11 targets last week against the Panthers. White grabbed six of them for 57 yards. He can be started as a WR3 for the remainder of the season. The Falcons need to work on getting Algae the ball a bit more. Last week against the Panthers was Crump’s first TD since week 3
Avoid: Algae Crumpler (Don’t let last weeks TD fool you into starting him)
NYG @ Detroit:
NYG: Ranked 9th in pass defense
Detroit: Ranked 30th in pass defense
Burress/Toomer/Shockey: The Cowboys did an excellent job covering Burress and Toomer last weekend, but that allowed Shockey to run wild. Things should ease up this weekend against a weak Lion secondary. I expect to see Burress in the end zone at least once. Toomer and Shockey are nice plays as well.
Exploit: Amani Toomer – 7 catches, 70+ yards, TD (I struck out with listing him as a sleeper last week, but I’m rolling the dice again on him.)
Williams/Johnson/McDonald:
Roy Williams finally reward his owners with a pair of TD catches last week and also led the team in targets with 13. Roy needs to be more consistent, but I think he could have a solid outing against the G-men. It’s amazing to me that the most reliable receiver on the Lions is Shaun McDonald. But all this guy does is put solid stats on a weekly basis. He should post his usual 6-8 catches 80 yards and a TD.
Exploit: Shaun McDonald – 7 catches, 70 yards, TD
Avoid: Calvin Johnson (This guy is ice cold right now!)
Miami @ Philadelphia:
Miami: Ranked 5th in pass defense
Philadelphia: Ranked 22nd in pass defense
Booker/Hagan: Yikes, the QB situation in the Miami is looking pretty bad. I don’t see good things for any of the Miami receivers even if the Eagles don’t have a very good defense. Do your fantasy lineup a favor and stay away from the Dolphin receivers.
Avoid – Marty Booker (#1 WR, but QB stinks!)
Curtis/Brown/Westbrook: After a slow start, WR Reggie Brown finally found the end zone last week against the Redskins. Meanwhile, Kevin Curtis continues his up and down season, and Brian Westbrook continues to be a PPR stud. I like Brown to continue his success this week against the Fins. Just a gut feeling here, but I think he will find more success and find the end zone again this week.
Avoid: Kevin Curtis
Exploit: Reggie Brown – 6 catches, 75+ yards, TD
Oakland @ Minnesota:
Oakland: Ranked 4th in pass defense
Minnesota: Ranked 32nd in pass defense
Porter/Curry: Looks like CPepp may be starting again for the Vikes. Ronald Curry will benefit more than anybody with this change. Curry could have a big game against the Vikes and their 32nd ranked defense. Porter could get a long TD as well. Curry could be used as a WR3/Flex, but I’m not sure about Porter. I’d look elsewhere.
Exploit: Ronald Curry – 6 catches 70+ yards, TD
Viking WR: Let’s see, Tavaris Jackson is the QB and the Raiders are a top 5 pass defense. Does that answer your question?
San Diego @ Jasonville:
San Diego: Ranked 25th in pass defense
Jacksonville: Ranked 27th in pass defense
Gates/VJax/Chambers/LT: This would be a good week to start your Chargers. Rivers should have no problems passing against the Jag secondary. TE Antonio Gates has been VERY quiet that least two weeks only catching four passes for 36 yards. I expect that to change in a big way this week. Anything less than 70 yards and a TD would be a major disappointment. VJax and Chambers are basically getting the same amount of looks within the offense, but I could see Chambers finding the end zone this week. No need to write anything about LT. You know what you’re getting.
Exploit: Chris Chambers – 5 catches, 60 yards, TD
Reggie Williams: I don’t see the Jags being able to run the ball this week, so they will have to air it out to keep up with the Bolts. The only receiver from the Jags I see that may have a chance to produce is Reggie Williams. He could be somebody to roll the dice with this week, but keep in mind, the Chargers pass defense created six INTs from Peyton Manning last week, so temper you expectations.
Exploit: Reggie Williams – 5 catches, 60 yards, TD
Kansas City @ Indy:
Kansas City: Ranked 18th in pass defense
Indy: Ranked 2nd in pass defense
Bowe/Gonzales: Don’t like the match up here for the Chiefs, but the loss of Dwight Freeney could loom large. Huard and Croyle both looked awful last week, but they will be forced to throw this week to keep up with the Colts. Look for Bowe and Gonzo to be very active, but temper your expectations. This game has blow out written all over it.
Wayne/Harrison/Clark/Fletcher: I think it is safe to say, Harrison needs to stay on your bench until we actually see a productive game out of him. Reggie Wayne is Peyton’s new man until proven otherwise. Wayne had a great game statistically last weekend catching 10 passes for 140 yards, a TD, and an insane 18 targets. Not sure if they will need him this week again like they did last weekend, but 100+ yards and a TD are possible. Bryan Fletcher benefited last weekend with the absence of Dallas Clark. If Clark misses another game, Fletcher could again be a factor. Keep an eye on the Dallas Clark injury.
Exploit: Bryan Fletcher – 5 catches, 50 yards, TD (ONLY if Clark does not play)
New Orleans @ Houston:
New Orleans: 29th ranked Pass Defense
Houston: 13th ranked Pass Defense
Colston/Patten/Bush: Despite the match up, I like this match up with the Saints offense starting to click. Marques Colston has been playing like a WR1 the last couple of weeks, and is a must start this weekend. WR David Patten did not get much attention last week, only catching three passes for 37 yards. I could definitely see him turning it around this weekend. And then there’s that guy Reggie Bush. No need to explain how effective he is in a PPR league.
Exploit: David Patten – 5 catches 80 yards, TD (Just a gut feeling here.)
Andre Johnson/Walter/Daniels: He’s back, and he could not come back any faster. Andre Johnson returns to the field after an injury to his knee. AJ was unstoppable before getting hurt in Carolina. New Orleans is the perfect defense for him to come back. It will be interesting to see how effective Walter and Daniels will be with AJ’s return. AJ is definitely worth a start, but I’m not sure I like Walter or Daniels with his return.
Carolina @ Green Bay:
Carolina: 14th ranked Pass Defense
Green Bay: 18th ranked Pass Defense
Smith: As a Panther fan, this is hard to say, but it may be time to look for other options in Carolina. They don’t have a QB on the roster to get the ball to him. Mark my words, when I see this could turn ugly. The Panthers can’t move the ball, and the Packers have the exact opposite problem.
Avoid: Steve Smith (sad year to be a Steve Smith owner)
Jennings/Driver/Lee: Last week, Donald Driver led the team in targets with seven as Brett Favre spread the ball around nicely. Driver caught four catches for 63 yards, but dropped a possible long TD pass. Jennings matched Driver with four catches and 63 yards. TE Donald Lee rewarded his owners last weekend with a TD to go along with 27 yards receiving. The Panthers are horrible with covering TE’s as proven by Algae Crumpler’s game-winning TD catch last weekend. Lee is a great start this weekend.
Exploit: Donald Lee – 4 catches, 40 yards, TD
Arizona @ Cincinnati:
Arizona: Ranked 10th in Pass Defense
Cincinnati: Ranked 28th in Pass Defense
Boldin/Fitz/Pope: All three are great starts this weekend. Larry Fitzgerald and TE Leonard Pope rewarded owners last weekend as they each hauled in two TDs. Boldin got nine targets but was well covered by the Lion secondary. All three of these guys are capable of getting into the end zone, but the people may want to scoop up is Leonard Pope. Pope caught all five of the passes thrown his way for 52 yards and two scores. He could make a nice fill in at TE if you need some production.
Exploit: Leonard Pope – 4 catches, 40 yards, TD
Housh/Chad Johnson/Henry: It’s hard to believe neither one of these three guys got into the end zone last weekend. That will change this weekend. Housh would be my best guess of getting into the end zone. Chad Johnson has not scored a TD since week two, and I don’t see things getting any better this weekend for him and his owners. The Cards have a decent pass defense, and I can see them locking Ocho Cinco down. I also think Chris Henry will start taking some of his looks away. Henry should be good for 80+ yards and a score.
Exploit: Chris Henry – 5 catches 80 yards, TD
Avoid: Chad Johnson (Now hear me out. Three things worry me here. One is his injury, two is that Housh and Henry are stealing some looks, and three is the Cards defense. Maybe 60-80 yards this week, but not much else. If you can live with that type of production, by all means, start him!)
Cleveland @ Baltimore:
Cleveland: Ranked 31st in Pass Defense
Baltimore: Ranked 12 in Pass Defense
Edwards/Winslow: WR Braylon Edwards was covered nicely all game long by the Steelers, but was still able to grab a tip-toe TD pass. Winslow meanwhile caught five passes for 46 yards and a TD. I don’t see Baltimore being able to match up with Edwards and Winslow. I expect each player again to find the end zone.
Mason/Clayton/Heap: Nice call on Mark Clayton last week on my part if you ask me. He may be the Raven receiver to have down the stretch. This is a nice match up though for all Raven receivers. Mason and Clayton could both find the end zone this weekend and should be considered WR3/Flex options.
Exploit: Mark Clayton - 6 catches, 100+ yards, TD
Pittsburgh @ NYJ:
Pittsburgh: Ranked 1st in Pass Defense
NYJ: Ranked 24th in Pass Defense
Holmes/Ward/Miller: This trio should have no problems getting open against the Jet secondary. Last week, it was Hines Ward burning the Brownies for 80+ yards and a score, while Miller chipped in with 70+ yards and a TD. This week, I think Holmes gets involved and finds the end zone. The Steelers will be able to move the ball all day long on the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets!
Coles/Cotchery: Hello Jet receivers, meet the number one pass defense in the NFL. Not sure I would start a Jets receiver this week. The QB situation is a big question mark, and the Steelers just don’t play nice.
Avoid: Laveraneus Coles/Jerricho Cotchery (Bad Match Up)
Washington @ Dallas:
Washington: Ranked 22nd in Pass Defense
Dallas: Ranked 16th in Pass Defense
Moss/Randle El/Cooley/McCardell: Looks like Santana Moss will miss yet another game. Not that it would make a big deal, because Moss has done absolutely nothing this year. Randle El has also been hampered by injuries, but at least he’s been somewhat involved. He could see a possible TD against Dallas secondary. With Moss out, look for McCardell to see some passes come his way. Oh and don’t get carried away with Thrash’s two TDs. That will NEVER happen again.
TO/Crayton/Witten: It’s hard to believe how far the Redskin pass defense has fallen. A couple of weeks ago before the Pats game, they have a top 10 pass defense. Now they are getting shredded on a weekly basis. Now comes TO, Crayton, and Witten. The Skins have no one who can stop Romo and company from passing the ball. With Dallas playing at home, and the Redskins being a huge rival of the Cowboys, I expect Romo to put up some sick stats. All three receivers need to be in your lineup.
Chicago @ Seattle:
Chicago: Ranked 16th in Pass Defense
Seattle: Ranked 20th in Pass Defense
Berrian/Moose/Clark: With news that Rex Grossman is back as the Bears starting QB, it could mean bad things for the passing offense. He was able to connect with Berrian last weekend on a 59-yard TD bomb. Berrian will benefit more than any other receiver. Moose and Clark were doing well with Griese at QB, but now that Rex is back, I expect their numbers to take a hit. Berrian would be the only WR I could see starting, but if you have better options, by all means use them.
Engram/Branch/Hackett: It sounds like this may be the week that Branch returns to the starting lineup. If not, this is a great spot for Engram and Hackett. Hackett produced BIG last Monday night going over 100 yards and getting into the end zone. Look for more of the same from the Hawks passing game this weekend because their running game is non-existent. Look for Hackett to continue his success, as well as Engram. Hass should be able to go for 200+ yards and two TDs.
Exploit: DJ Hackett – 6 catches, 90 yards, TD
Avoid: Deion Branch (Not healthy)
STL @ SF:
STL: Ranked 15th in Pass Defense
SF: Ranked 21st in Pass Defense
Holt/Bruce/Bennett: What’s gotten into the Rams offense the last couple of weeks? They suddenly look like the “Greatest Show on Turf.” Torry Holt has now posted back to back 100-yard performances, and Ike Bruce Drew Bennett, and Randy McMichael all found their way into the end zone. The San Fran secondary has been getting beat on a nightly basis, so the Ram passing game should be able to do so damage. Start all three of these guys, and watch the Ram passing game rack up yards and TDs.
Davis/Battle: Nope, I’ve made a promise not to recommend any WR on this team anymore. Alex Smith will never be an NFL QB. He’s got some decent talent around him, but is just not getting the job done.
Avoid: All San Fran offensive players
New England @Buffalo:
New England: Ranked 6th in Pass Defense
Buffalo: Ranked 26th in Pass Defense
Moss/Welker/Watson: Please tell me you people don’t believe the Pats are going to give the Bills a close game? This will be at least a three TD victory for the Pats. Buffalo does not have the offense to stay on the field and outscore the Pats. And now their best player, RB Lynch is not going to play either?
Evans/Reed: Wow, after pimping Evans for at least two TDs last week, and he does not get one? Evans gets a downgrade this week against the Pats. The Pats have been all about making statements with their wins this year, and Sunday night in Primetime, will be no different. Evans may get you 70-80 yards, but I don’t see him finding the end zone. Josh Reed is the next most targeted receiver on the Bills team, but he is not recommended this week, or any week for that matter.
Tennessee @ Denver:
Tennessee: Ranked 7th in Pass Defense
Denver: Ranked 8th in Pass Defense
Gauge/Williams: Where has Justin Gauge been the whole year? Guy looked unstoppable last week against the Jags battling defenders and catching seven passes for 90 yards and a TD. Meanwhile, Roydell Williams’ stats could have been a whole lot better if it were not for a TD that was called back due to a penalty. Denver responded nicely with the win last week, but this is not a good football team. Their secondary has allowed 16 TDs this year so far, so there are some possibilities there for Williams and Gauge. If you in are in desperate need for WRs this weekend, roll the dice with one of these two.
Marshall/Stokley: With Javon Walker out for the Broncos, second year receiver Brandon Marshall has established himself as the go to receiver on this team. He’s been by far their best receiver and can run great routes and has good hands. Last week, Marshall pulled in six passes for 85 yards on nine targets. He’s a solid start this week against the Titan pass defense. Stokley on the other hand, did not get a lot of attention last week against the Chiefs and only managed two catches for 36 yards. Marshall is the better of the two to start, so I would stay away from Stokley.
Top 5 WR match ups to Exploit:
1. DJ Hackett
2. Chris Henry Cin
3. David Patten N.O.
4. Amani Toomer NYG
5. Ike Hilliard TB
Top 5 WR match ups to Avoid:
1. Steve Smith Caro.
2. Calvin Johnson Det.
3. Marty Booker Mia.
4. Algae Crumpler Atl.
5. Chad Johnson Cin. (bold call here, but I just don't like what's happening to him)
