ETA-and this changes a ton with regards to him getting claimed. Moves me from very unlikely he is claimed to likely.

Fair point about Green Bay - I hadnt considered that.  I still think the allure of playing with Rodgers and chasing a ring should and would compensate for that but the bright lights of Las Vegas could be pretty appealing too, and Carr is a good QB.

You have Baltimore on a list of teams not winning a title.  I disagree with that.  Buffalo is the only AFC team that I think is decisively better than them, and they definitely are, but after that its the wild west in the AFC and adding an alpha WR could tip those scales.

Browns would eat the signing bonus portion, but lowering his base salary would make it more likely another team claims him off waivers since the new team takes on the remaining portion.

Seems a bit weasel-y, how much are they really gonna save this way? Maybe a million? Why not just cut him and let him pick a new team? Doesn’t set the greatest example for their other players.

He is off target to OBJ on an absurd 35% of pass attempts in his career

It drops to 20% when targeting literally anyone else

If its not the Raiders, Packers, or Bills I will be surprised.  They clearly make the most sense, at least to me.  Unless of course someone like the Lions, Jags or Dolphins grab him on waivers but my understanding, which could be wrong is that if he is taken off waivers the salary space will need to be cleared whereas if he is signed after clearing waivers Cleveland is on the hook for the difference between what the new team pays (league minimum) and what is is still owed.

Green Bay really has no choice. They need 27 teams to pass on him before they can make a claim. Either that or they trade for him with the team that picked him up, which they could have done with Clevelenad if they wanted to. In either case, they would be on the hook for whatever remainig salary OBJ has.

Feelings aside, it will be interesting to see if he lands somewhere with a legitimate NFL QB.

Baker is subpar IMO. Great in commercials... JAG QB.

Not how I undertstand it but I am certainly no salary cap expert.  My understanding is that if he is claimed, the team claiming him would owe the remainder of what he is due this year.  If he clears waivers - which he may for this reason - then Cleveland is responsible for the difference in his new salary and the contract they owe him - so the new team would sign him to a league minimum contract and Cleveland picks up the rest.

This is how I interpreted it, but there are moving parts and Cleveland may structure it differently if they can.  I am not claiming this to be fact, just my current understanding.  If you are correct then you are right, they wont have a shot at him and he will likely end up in a hellhole like Detroit Miami or Jax.

He's a top-10 QB over the last 4 seasons in passer rating, in games he hasn't had Odell Beckham.

He looked pretty good in the 2nd half last year after struggling early. I thought he was turning a corner. But he's been awful this season. Maybe it's all due to the shoulder.

Most likely it is. Didn't that injury happen in week 2?

Mayfield arguably had the best rookie season of any QB ever in 2018, and was an elite QB down the stretch in 2020. 2 time periods that didn't involve Odell Beckham.

OBJ still gets open, but ranks last in catchable target rate the last few years. He's also dropped some passes this year, but that's probably something to do with his shoulder injury. Maybe Baker throws underneath more when OBJ is out, and just kinda sucks throwing downfield? Idk, it's a weird split in a small sample size. But it doesn't seem like it's on OBJ to me. 

 
Would be stunned if he joined the Bills. Is he knocking Sanders off the field?  I guess Sanders could move to the slot. 
 

I don’t see him fitting in with the Bills current culture.

Since Odell Beckham Jr. joined the #Browns in 2019 only 62% of his targets have been deemed catchable.

That ranks 62nd out of 62 qualifying receivers with at least 200 targets the past 3 seasons....

Eli was a bad QB, a worse QB than Baker, when OBJ was there. Now, maybe Eli is a better QB for OBJ, but Eli was a bottom 16 QB (bottom 10 probably every year but 2014) his last few years with OBJ.

First, those Giants team stunk with an average 5.6 wins/season and only one winning season. Its a team game but a QB has an outsized influence on wins and when you have more than 6 wins only once in 5 years...

Over that time Eli never thew less than 11 INTs (a high of 16). His comp% and other stats were mediocre to bad (except yards). He was a bottom ranked QB in DYAR (18th-22nd) and QBR (16th to 25th) every year except OBJ's rookie season where he was 11th in DYAR and 14th in DYAR.

Eli was bad. His best year was OBJ's first - where he was a league average QB. And he regressed every year after that.

1. Seems to me he runs more long routes than the other receivers. Those throws are bound to be less accurate.

2. The Browns fans here say a large part of the issues is he likes to improvise, while the coaching staff amd Mayfield want precise routes. If they're right, Mayfield throwing the ball where he's supposed to be when his improvisation has him somewhere else results in an uncatchable target.

 
QB and WR1 both under 6ft tall? Does that combo work well for anyone besides Russ/Lockett? Can a taller QB see these longer routes develop better than one who cant even see over the Lineman ?

Eli Manning was not pure garbage when ODB entered the league in 2014, his first 3 seasons with the Giants he was breaking records for how fast he was racking up catches, yds, TDs, you can't do that with nothing at QB. 

Eli is a Hall of Fame Quarterback, hate to break it to you. Baker Mayfield not likely to ever hoist up a Lombardi IMHO. 

I appreciate all the data you produced but I don't think many in the national sports media would agree with you.

Respectfully disagree. Eli to me was a good to very good QB who had flaws that kept him from being great. Mayfield is okay so far, not close to Eli though he certainly has time to prove himself.

Thanks for the insight. Seems like more a terrible fit than anyone being at fault then. Hopefully OBJ can find an offense that fits him better than Stefanski's like Diggs did. 

 
He’s back to being to expensive to get claimed.

I have zero idea how this benefits the Browns but they basically agreed to let Odell out of last two years of his contract and anyone who claims him would be picking up his $7m plus pay for the rest of the year.

Again none of this makes sense to me for the Browns. Big win for Odell who now likely goes unclaimed and he’ll be free

But he's lost @ $30 mill over the next two seasons, yes?  No one will pay him near that much going forward.

If he'd stayed healthy and positive Cleveland would have paid him.  He became not worth it not because of his poor play, but because of his poor personality.

I agree with you, he's not and hasn't been at all in Cleveland.  But it didn't seem Cleveland felt that way till he and his dad became cancerous.

 
Thinking about Beckham more and more, I think the Steelers make some sense. 

Mainly a 3 WR team, JuJu out for the season, Big Ben likely in his last hurrah. Tomlin has gotten a lot out of guys like Bell/AB, who while they eventually wore out their welcome, were extremely useful for them.

Steelers barely bothered covering Beckham last week.  I doubt they’re interested.

Ben also likes to improvise. If he does well it would stick it to the Browns 

 
I’m no fan of his but wouldn’t mind seeing if Julio can help keep him in check. With Henry out, the titans can use another tool and tannehill probably could get him the ball fairly well. He might not be thrilled being the 3 there but he could help the team bridge until DH returns.
