WR Odell Beckham, Jr., Free Agent (2 Viewers)

Too bad the Lions can’t claim him and trade him. Detroit needs to focus on continuing to lose games. Not sure how bringing OBJ helps that goal if he cannot be traded or will not be a long term fixture.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Odell Beckham wants to sign with a "playoff contender" if he clears waivers.

Schefter added that only nine teams have the cap space to claim Beckham and his $7.25 cap hit they would incur this year. Because of his lack of production in Cleveland, it's unlikely any team sees him as a worthwhile risk at that cost. He will almost certainly clear waivers and be free to sign with any team willing to bring him on board. Schefter went on to say, "Multiple teams with winning records and established offenses are expected to be interested in Beckham." The former star receiver should land with a contending team shortly after he clears waivers on Tuesday.

Eli Manning was not pure garbage when ODB entered the league in 2014, his first 3 seasons with the Giants he was breaking records for how fast he was racking up catches, yds, TDs, you can't do that with nothing at QB.

Eli is a Hall of Fame Quarterback, hate to break it to you. Baker Mayfield not likely to ever hoist up a Lombardi IMHO.

I appreciate all the data you produced but I don't think many in the national sports media would agree with you.

If Eli Manning is a Hall of Fame QB then the standards of the HoF have become meaningless. The Hall is for players who were pre-eminent at their position. Manning was never even CLOSE to winning a league MVP.

His best season (2009) Manning was outperformed by Brees, P Manning, Philip Rivers, Brett Favre, and Tom Brady. Depending on the stat you use you can also point to Rodgers, Roethlisberger, Matt Ryan, etc. also outproducing Eli.

I'm talking every stat. The two highest Manning ranks in are QBR (7th), TDs (8th) and TD% (6th). Every other stat (including INTs) Manning is 10th in the league or lower. You're sending a player to the Hall who in his best season he was the 9th-14th best player at his position?

Manning has a career completion of 60.3% ! David Garrard and Matt Schaub had better career comp% and passer ratings.

I don't know what "national media" you're referring to but I see very few who think highly of E Manning. Perhaps your referring to talking heads like Mike Florio or Skip Bayless who know very little about football.

He beat the Patriots twice in the Super Bowl.  I don't care if his career stats are worse than Nathan Peterman's, I'd put him in the HOF just for those two games.

I am interested to see what GM risks his job for that junk.

"I can save him and he's the 'most talented WR in the game'"

LMAO - if you can't smell that garbage a mile away you must have Covid.

He and his posse apparently think the the world is against him but that doesn't make it true.  Just like the Kardashians and the fidget spinner - can we just put this in the rear view mirror?

You’re probably right, but depending on the contract I’m not opposed to the Titans seeing if Julio can help keep him under control.

Ben also likes to improvise. If he does well it would stick it to the Browns
The Browns scored 41 in their first game without OBJ. I think the ability to "stick it to them" for that roster move has passed. He was hurting the Brown's offense. Nothing he does anywhere else will change that.

I was a proponent of moving on from OBJ, but it’s not impossible that the Browns can do better without him AND he goes on to do well with another team.

Agree. But that in no way "sticks it to the Browns." It was the best move for the Browns no matter what OBJ does elsewhere. That was my point.

There’s a chance for more Odell Beckham Jr. drama as he heads to waivers

Report: Odell Beckham Jr. Prepared to Cause ‘Issues’ If Wrong Team Claims Him Off Waivers

Excerpt:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday that Beckham “does not want to go to just any team.” He’s hoping to go to “a playoff contender and in a winning environment, where he believes he would be happy and productive.”

Fair enough. What player doesn’t want a chance to win a Super Bowl? But here’s where Schefter’s report gets interesting. He writes that Beckham is willing to make life difficult for his next team if he ends up somewhere he doesn’t want to be.

“If a team that does not fit this criteria claims Beckham and the $7.25 million remaining on his contract, there could be potential issues for that team, according to a source, although it is unclear exactly what those issues would be,” Schefter wrote.

I think the way Beckham left New York and Cleveland makes it abundantly clear what those issues would be. Schefter’s report reads like Beckham and his agent telling every cellar dweller thinking of submitting a waiver claim, “That’s a nice football team you’ve got there. It’d be a shame if something happened to it.”

The chances Beckham would have been claimed on waivers were slim to begin with. After restructuring his contract to void the final two years of the deal, Beckham is owed $7.5 million for the rest of this season if he gets claimed on waivers. (If he goes unclaimed by Tuesday’s 4 p.m. waiver deadline, the Browns owe him $4.25 million.) Schefter reported on Fridaythat the steep price tag meant it was unlikely Beckham would be claimed on waivers. So then why did Beckham’s camp even think it was necessary to make the threat about “potential issues”?

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio said on NBC’s Football Night in America that Beckham would prefer to go to the Seahawks but the 49ers and his hometown Saints are also contenders. From a pure entertainment standpoint, Seattle seems like a great destination for him. Either Beckham pairs with stud receivers D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett to form a fearsome trio of wideouts, or he becomes Russell Wilson’s distant third option behind those guys and throws a tantrum over not getting the ball enough that fuels several more weeks of a drama-filled news cycle.

He'd be the clear #3 in Seattle. Likely seeing fewer targets than he saw in Cleveland. Say what you will about Antonio Brown, but he's seemed pretty content being the #3(for the most part) behind Evans and Godwin. Would Beckham be behind Metcalf and Lockett?

Though, if Seattle being 3-5 and adding Beckham leads to them running the offense like they did the first half of 2020(when Wilson looked like the clear NFL MVP) I could understand at least. That said, I don't see Seattle being even in the top-5 most likely teams to go after OBJ.

The real issue here is OBJ thinks he's a #1 WR, and he's put nothing on tape in 3 years to suggest he's anything more than a good #3 WR.  The fact that Mayfield looks like a pro bowl QB every time OBJ isn't playing, especially yesterday, has to be taken as a sign.

Baker doing fine so-far without OBJ.
I think that is the issue with OBJ and nobody really understands it.  He won't thrive nor survive with "fine" QB play.  If you aren't winning games and competing for a SB and he isn't getting targeted 7 to 8 times a game... dude isn't happy.

Say whatever you will about him as a player, person - it is what it is.  There have been countless receivers like him and there will be more... him being in a run-heavy offense with a sub-par QB is a recipe for a headache.  Regardless of the outcome and how fans, players, personnel feel about it - this was the only move.  He didn't fit the team.

On a personal note, I would be appalled by my father's actions if he posted something like that.  At some point, you just have to put your head down and let your agent do the work.  The video was embarassing.

Reports of him wanting to go to Seattle but also wanting to play for a contender seem to be at odds with each other. Sure the wildcard race is pretty wide open, but Seattle is at best the 3rd best team in their division even once Russ comes back after the Bye. And there's no guarantee Russ stays in Seattle past this year.

Those 3 teams Florio mentioned: Seattle, SF, and NO would be a disaster for his fantasy value. The Saints would be the lesser of three evils there since at least he would get targets (even if its from a terrible QB).

The best case scenario seemed like the Raiders, who are probably out now after signing DJax. Competent QB, no other alpha WRs there, would get targets. That doesn’t seem in the cards at this point though.

Over/under on when we are back here to review the carnage form whatever occurs next?  Might be 2022 training camp or there-about since we are pretty deep into 2021.

Not sure who will take the bait but as most used car sales guys know - "There is an ### for every seat"

I agree, but the Russ consideration isn’t going to be a factor in his decision. This is a 7 week contract year for him. I can’t see him caring where Russ goes next year as he knows he won’t be in Seattle next year. The thing that I don’t get is why he would prefer Seattle to GB. GB more of a contender (if that actually matters to him) and more targets up for grabs as he would easily be a WR2 next to Adams (instead of a 3 in Seattle).

Lions coach Dan Campbell said the team "won't be on the market" for Odell Beckham.

The Lions hold the No. 1 waivers claim meaning they get first crack at adding Beckham, and his current contract, to their roster. With Campbell removing his team from the picture, the Texans are next in line. Multiple reports have indicated that Beckham will clear waivers because of the $7.3 million remaining on his contract this year. Beckham also reportedly wants to play with a contender which also rules out Detroit.

After the last couple of weeks the Raiders had the last thing they’d do is bring in OBJ, I think.

This is not crushing to Adams?
Well I was talking about OBJ here. Don’t own Adams so couldn’t care less. Ha. All joking aside though, I don’t think it has nearly the effect on Adams’ value as it would someone like DK in Seattle. Adams will still get his, it will just consolidate all the non-Adams targets which have been wasted on JAGs like MVS over the years.

Well he cleared waivers. Now we get to see which team he gets to rot with now…

Yes I own him.  Thinking it may be better to drop him and watch others chase points…but I’ll hold and see

NBC Sports Edge:

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Odell Beckham cleared waivers.

The 29-year-old will officially become a free agent for the first time in his career, pocketing $4 million from Cleveland and becoming free to sign anywhere he chooses. Reportedly eyeing a "playoff contender" and thus the Packers as his No. 1 destination, it's possible the Browns see Beckham again soon since the two teams square off on Christmas. He could also choose to run-block from three-wide sets with the Seahawks. Per Josina Anderson, Beckham is expected to "take some time" and "assess the best situation" before deciding his next destination.

If GB offers 1 million and Sea offers 5 million……
If Seattle wanted to pay him, they could have picked him up off waivers. They were one of the few teams who had the cap room. And besides, this is a 7 week contract year for OBJ. He shouldn’t be as concerned with what he’s making this year, but should be focusing on that next contract this summer. And of the two, which team would afford him more opportunities to impress and hoodwink some team into overpaying for him this summer?  It’s not Seattle.

It might be about getting a deal that includes a contract next year.  Everybody is going to offer 1 mil this year, but they can make it a 2 or 3 year contract if they want.  OBJ might want to get that security now rather than test the waters next March.

If it's a one year rental only, then he should look to A) maximize his personal stats and B) get a ring - and depending on his personal priorities, he may prefer one over the other.

No doubt, the rational choice would be to sign with the team with the best QB in the hunt, in need of a 1 or 2. GB definitely fits, but so would Buffalo, and dare I say the raiders? Although LV doesn’t need more drama this year.

Was hoping he would move quick and catch on with a better team…I can feel he’s going to eat up bench all season for me before he can be trusted again. Awesome.
