WR Odell Beckham, Jr., Free Agent (5 Viewers)

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones did not rule out the possibility of the team still signing Odell Beckham Jr.

Speaking at the owners' meeting on Monday, Jones said of the OBJ situation, "I don't want to talk about that but stand by. This thing could break." According to ESPN's Todd Archer, Jones said if OBJ were to sign that it would be sooner rather than later, although Jones would offer a specific timeframe. The Cowboys spent over a month attempting to court OBJ, both over Twitter and in person, but the two sides have yet to agree on a deal. The recent signing of T.Y. Hilton would lead some to believe a deal between the Cowboys and the 30-year-old receiver is all but dead, but Jones appears unwilling to say as much. Beckham Jr. met with the Cowboys, Giants and Bills, but has yet to receive a formal offer. Buffalo recently signed John Brown and Cole Beasley to its team, leading many to believe the Bills are no longer a destination for the veteran receiver.

I held him all year in my dynasty league with intentions of trading him for a draft pick after he signed with someone. That didn't work out too well...

Body cam of the incident.

edit: tried to fix the link but it seems to just keep starting 9 minutes in. sorry.

Just curious if anyone knows the answer to this. Can playoff teams still sign street free agents? All player contracts and paychecks are paid out in Weeks 1-18. Similarly, the salary cap for 2022 essentially closed out when the regular season ended, so there would be no way to account for the contract and apply it to the 2022 season. Unless I am missing something, there would be no way to compensate the newly signed player.

Yes

And regarding Odell this is a bad look for him but this is twice now he's been thrown off a plane for being in such a hard sleep they had a hard time waking him up, right? That seems excessive, and I mean by the flight staff, not Odell.

As far as the street free agents part goes, what is the mechanism for a team to do so? Based on what I remember on players getting paid, all that's left for players to collect are playoff shares and there are no more pay checks (or salary cap charges) this season. Other than a team would be dumb to do something like this, what's to stop someone from signing OBJ to a $20 million contract for the playoffs (and not even play him) with 2 additional years at $5 million per year? (Basically a 2-year deal worth $30 million). How would that $20 million be accounted for under the salary cap?

Not entirely sure but you can rollover unused cap space so I think that's one area that makes doing what you suggest as not necessary.

Field Yates put out a tweet a few days ago I think which showed the rollover amounts for each team and he included in that tweet that after the playoffs the NFL will audit incentives, bonus, etc and re-adjust the roll over amount.

Lol, no. That tweet is dated November 27th.

But wait. Am I the confused one? Is this not new but the video released from his Nov 27th incident? Man, if so I whiffed that, thought this was a second incident.

ETA-confirming I'm the confused one, sorry for the big whiff.

I understand the rollover and incentive reporting / calculation process as far as transitioning from one year of the salary cap to the next. What I was hypothesizing was whether a team that had no cap room left at the end of the 2022 regular season tried to pull a fast one and give a guy $20 million upfront (to not play in the playoffs) when the salary cap for 2023 hadn't started yet. Since the salary cap from 2022 has already ended and the one for 2023 hasn't started yet, then what? I would guess the $20 million payment would have to be accounted for somewhere in the salary cap . . . but who knows how or which year?

According to one of the flight attendants, when the police were called he didn’t have his pants on

They did claim that, more then once I think, but he was wearing them when police arrived and my guess is IF he had taken them off earlier he had shorts on. That one flight attendant overreacted big time IMO and she's the one the passengers who had to deplane should have been mad at. Understandable if they could not wake him to call for medical help but you could tell LE did not think there was an issue but let her decide. She went for the full Karen.

Career over.

But did he really have a great career? Nope. Flash in the pan. Injuries, issues....diva.

His teammate in LSU Jarvis Landry had a better overall career.

I don't think his career is over.

Weird that he had his sweatpants off, allegedly, while they couldn't wake him up to put on his seat belt. maybe that's a kink, buckle me in baby.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the team still has interest in signing free agent WR Odell Beckham.

"He’s somebody that I have the same kind of interest that I had in him during the season," said Jones, who added he's had "indirect contact" with the free agent receiver. Beckham was linked to Dallas in December but concerns over his knee prevented a deal from getting done. That could change now that Beckham, who was asking for a multi-year deal, is fully healthy. Beckham, 30, is one of the top wideouts available this offseason.

Free agent Odell Beckham will conduct a Friday workout for interested teams.

Beckham will be working out in Arizona, with ESPN's Jordan Raanan reporting the Giants will be amongst the teams in attendance. Still recovering from his torn ACL in the 2021-22 Super Bowl, Beckham seemed to nearly sign with the Cowboys last season but was evidently never in good enough health. Now on the wrong side of 30, Beckham has appeared in just 21 games over the past three seasons. He still appeared to have some juice left for the Rams in 2021, but Beckham's best ball is well behind him.

I wonder if he’s flying to Arizona…

If Beckham is willing to accept that he's not going to be a #1, and maybe not even a #2, then I'd have a ton of interest signing him. If he still thinks its 2018 and the Browns tenure had nothing to do with his declining skills, then I'd much rather pursue someone else.

If I were a GM, I'd be treating Beckham pretty similarly to how JuJu was treated last offseason, probably the same for Michael Thomas. Prove it deals.

ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio reports Odell Beckham Jr. is seeking wants to earn $20 million per year on his next contract.

You won't find many people arguing about how nice it would be to make $20 million a year. Of course, you also won't find many who are worth that annual salary -- OBJ included. Beckham earning $20 million in 2023 would make him among the 10 highest-paid receivers next season, which feels a bit excessive for a 30-year-old receiver who is on his way back from a torn ACL, and who missed all of last season. Beckham recently held a workout in front of 13 NFL teams and should have a market in the coming days. However, it's unlikely he fetches anything close to the pay day he's seeking at this point. Perhaps an incentive laden contract helps him get closer to that number, but teams are unlikely to shell out top dollar for his services at this point in time.

Wants 20M a year….bwahahahahaha. Dude…..get over yourself.
I don't think he's going to get it, but when you can hold a private workout in Arizona and close to half the leagues sends a representative during one of their busy times of the year while we are in a depressed FA WR year I can see why he'd shoot high. Not attacking your post but just saying to me that's business, not ego. Kind of like Daniel Jones saying he was looking for $45m and signing for basically $41m.

Oh I get it. I just think no team will pay anything more than 7-8MM for a 1 year deal. At least I would not.

Of course OBJ still has this idea he is an elite WR…..and he has not had anything close that has resembled a 20MM a year season since 2016. And it has been 3 years of nothing burger production and injuries.

I get the curiosity of NFL teams….why not kick the tires on a guy who had three elite seasons and the last one being now 7 years ago (2016).

Never under estimate the level of Jerry’s infatuation with “name” WRs
My prediction is he comes in north of $12M with a lot of incentives. Whether that's Jerry or someone else. Just the market. $7-8M a year is what Robert Woods just got and he's a year older and looks shot.

Fair enough. I think OBJ looked pretty shot the last season he was on the field.....nothing close to that guy in 14-15-16. But someone may overpay for that hope of his old self.

If the Cowboys grab him......ooof good luck. I don’t even think he can even get through an entire season physically.

Oh I agree. I don’t want him unless he comes cheap and that doesn’t sound like it’s going to happen
