WR Odell Beckham, Jr., Free Agent (3 Viewers)

I know a lot of people in this thread called him crazy for seeking $15m and now got it and Shefter said his incentives were easily reachable so he probably beats what a few here laughed at him wanting.

Most of that $15m guarante is a bonus. It’s and one year deal but my guess will have dummy/voidable years in the deal, only reason to pay it out in bonus.
I’m not laughing at him wanting it. I’m laughing at the Ravens paying it.

People lose jobs for decisions like that.

We’ll see how he performs.

What’s the over on his season line for people to believe he’s worth that?

I’mma set it at 90/1001/8

Over or under? Go!

18/Season?!?!?!?!
UP TO $18M. I’m guessing a LOT of incentives.
$15m guaranteed
that's... A Lot.

Do you think he signs in Baltimore “knowing”/hoping Jackson comes back?
Or just taking the money and hoping Baltimore figures it out?
He apparently called the Jets last night and gave them a chance to match so that makes me think he's prioritizing money. Can't blame him.

But the ever cryptic Josina Anderson, who absolutely keeps in close contact with OBJ, tweeted this out:

@JosinaAnderson

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti has been in frequent communication with Odell Beckham Jr, pitching him on the idea of coming to Baltimore, the support he would have with the team and the necessity of helping to square things with Lamar Jackson as well. Source confirms 1y up 18M.

I’mma set it at 90/1001/8

Over or under? Go!
I'm working on assumption that Lamar is back so I'm going with the under.

And I'll just add I'd rather pay Odell $15-18M for a season then Thielen basically getting guaranteed almost $17M over next two years or Robert Woods having a good chance to see all of his $15.25M over 2 years. Not the worst WR contract this off-season IMO. But then I think Odell can still play, those other two are toast.

I’m glad the Jets didn’t match but I hope OBJ plays well.
I’m assuming he’s WR2 behind Bateman, and possibly WR3 behind whomever they draft?

I just think it’s a lot for. OBJ. I don’t think he’s been worth that for a while. But if that’s what the market will bear, hey, good for OBJ for getting his bag.

Under. Under. Under. OBJ hasn’t averaged enough in any of those categories to hit those levels (even if he played a full season). He hasn’t had 90 catches since 2016. And I wouldn’t expect him to play a full season without missing time.

Agree.

I’m basically saying he won’t be worth it. Time will tell.

More details on Odell Beckham Jr.‘s one-year deal with the #Ravens:

$13.835 million signing bonus
$1.165 million base salary
$3M in reachable incentives

So OBJ will make at least $15 million and as much as $18M on the deal negotiated by agent Zeke Sandhu.

So the Ravens are dumb for not signing any good WRs and then they're dumb when they do, just can't win with some people.

It's more than I think he's worth, but it's a 1 yr. deal- let's not act like it's some albatross that's going to cripple them for a decade.

likely the two sides, Lamar and team, are closer than what we're lead to believe. If it were an "ask" from Lamar to go get a WR like a OBJ and they just did....then the ball is now again in his court. Time for crap to get done.

Under for sure. I think it's very likely he's the #3 pass catcher on the team, behind Andrews and Bateman. Beckham was no longer a special WR years ago, can't imagine an ACL tear and a year off helps that.

I'd have much rather have had someone like Brandin Cooks if I were the Ravens.

Its probably good news for Andrews, as he spent pretty much the entire second half of last season being doubled after Bateman/Duvernay went down, and he was stuck with Robinson as the WR1.

That is a really bad deal for the Ravens

Ravens: “We’re really conscientious about spending, we can’t give our MVP caliber but often injured QB a contract he wants, which is in line with what other teams have given their QB”

Silence

Ravens: proceed make a guy who hasn’t had a 1,000 yard season in 4 years, hasn’t been a top WR in 7 years a top 16 paid WR.

🤷

So the Ravens are dumb for not signing any good WRs and then they're dumb when they do, just can't win with some people.

I think folks are fairly critical of OBJ being that alleged good receiver. Dude’s 30. It’s gonna be interesting to see if he still has it.

This part I completely agree with.

I really don’t think he’s going to have to be the WR1, which is good for him & the Ravens. Folks are sleeping on Bateman. He’s recovering on track & he profiles as an alpha receiver - albeit one who’s been a little snakebit with injuries early on,

But yeah. It’s a lot of $.

But it’s not my money, so hey, go Ravens. Maybe it helps them with LJax.

I wonder if Cooks would have signed in Baltimore. He’s only getting $2M more and another season. Seems a better use of funds.

I’m assuming he’s WR2 behind Bateman, and possibly WR3 behind whomever they draft?

I think they just gave him WR1 money because that's what they intend for him to be.
Yep.
I’m skeptical of both their intention of OBJ being that, and OF OBJ being capable of being that at 30 coming off a 2nd ACL.

But that said, he could be a productive WR2. I still think the Ravens are drafting a WR and I might be on board with the theory above that LJax asked for it. It’s a decent theory.

@Schultz_Report

Lamar Jackson and Odell Beckham Jr. have had multiple conversations during OBJ’s free agency about teaming up together and winning a Super Bowl with the #Ravens, according to sources familiar with the situation. There’s still business to handle with Lamar — but this is a significant

And Lamar and Odell are already face timing each other:

It wouldn’t be a surprise if this was done in part to appease LJ, just a mistake.

I’d strongly prefer cooks for the Ravens over OBJ. Good call.

To me there is nothing to wonder about. Cooks was not a FA, he was available via trade and for fairly cheap. If they wanted him they could have got him. I personally think it would have been a terrible fit, a total mismatch of WR and QB.

Cooks has mostly been QB-proof in his career. Why wouldn’t he be a good fit in BAL?

You’re right about the first part and the Texans even are paying part of his salary. We’ll disagree on the second but you might be right. (We’ll never know)

Hard for me to doubt their intention of him being a #1. You don’t pay 15 million guaranteed to be a #2. Is he capable is a whole other question. I think it was a bad move for the Ravens personally. But yeah, very likely it was Lamar demanding they get him another guy.

Bateman is a complete unknown at this point. Lot of hype last year and then the injury. As much as I don’t like the OBJ signing, I would bet he outperforms Bateman.

I believe Lamar works better with larger WR's, he prefers throwing to the middle areas of the field and WR's with strong YAC ability are ideal. Cooks is none of that.

Bateman is a former 1st round pick who’s fast, strong, & talented.

Dude ran a 4.39 at 6’1”, 196. Couple fluke injuries, but productive when he played.

Like I said - y’all sleeping on Bateman.

I would very very bet against OBJ outperforming Bateman.

OBJ is literally 1” taller at 5’11”. I’m highly skeptical of his YAC at this point.

Fair take.

You do if it helps bring home your franchise QB that your entire team is built around.

What’s 18M next to ~300M? Drop in the bucket.
I don’t believe the Ravens view Bateman as a superior option to OBJ, even after sitting out a year and with all the injuries. Bateman has upside but hasn’t done anything significant yet. Lackluster rookie season and then hurt last year.

I don't think their catch radius is remotely comparable.

Lackluster rookie season and then hurt last year.
Which makes him the Best Buy-low WR in FF right now.

Buy shares now and thank me after 2023. He had a strained abdomen his rookie year, and performed well when he played.

He had plantar surgery last year.

Pretty low risk on both looking ahead:

Go watch some of his college game clips. You’ll come away impressed. He was a 1st round pick for a reason.

count down to Lamar signing
Exactly.

I’ve changed my mind. Money well spent.
I doubt it will work out like this but if Lamar actually agreed to play on the non-exclusive tag it would have essentially meant that the Ravens gamble to use that tag over the exclusive tag freed up all but $2M of what they paid OBJ while possibly serving as the carrot to get Lamar to run it back another year.

Again not sure it will work out quite so cleanly, but if it does, I'll have to say the Ravens played this extremely well....and I hate the Ravens.

I'm not a huge fan of OBJ at this stage either, but who's available that's better? Like I said, it's more than I would have preferred but really the Ravens have to overpay for FA WRs.

Either way, a couple of a million bucks extra isn't a big deal, especially if it helps the QB situation.

Cooks has solid YAC ability. Certainly better than Beckham. I guess its possible Lamar could work better with larger WRs, but there really isn't evidence of that. The leading WRs during his tenure have been John Brown, Marquise Brown, and I guess Rashod Bateman before he got hurt last season.

Personally, in my opinion A-F scale, Beckham is a D+. There are at least 6 WRs in this draft I like more than Beckham, as well as FAs (for the price) like Meyers, JuJu, Chark, Thielen, Lazard, Campbell, and even Hardman. I just don't see the upside here, especially at this price, maybe if it were 1 year 5 million I could see it. But this is a lot of money for a guy, who hasn't been a real difference maker since 2018, is coming off a major ACL tear, and is on the wrong side of 30.

I guess I can get behind Beckham as the #3 option in a passing game, but asking more than that just feels like asking for trouble. This is giving me a big AJ Green signing with Arizona vibe.

ETA: Biggest winner here might be the Jets.
