WR Roman Wilson, PIT (1 Viewer)

He still is limited n practice although Tomlin said he expects an “uptick” in participation this week.

Certainly nothing in week 1 suggested the Steelers have a legitimate #2 WR so there is plenty of opportunity for Wilson. It will probably be another week or two.

Nothing in week one suggested they have a legitimate offense. Not certain how much opportunity would actually be there.

I would be running screaming from any player on the offensive side of the ball on that team right now not named Pickens. And even he shouldn't be trusted.

Steelers Depot
WR Roman Wilson (ankle) practiced fully again on Friday and he did NOT receive a game status designation on the Friday injury report. He is now looking very likely to make his NFL debut on Sunday vs Chargers. #Steelers #NFL 👍👍

Just picked him up off the waivers in my dynasty league, maybe we get to see him on the field before the Steelers season ends (for those with shorter roster limits and want a flyer).

Need to make a roster cut and not sure what to do with him. Bringing in Metcalf wasn't an endorsement. At best he's the 4/5 option in the passing game on a team without a QB.

Well, bolded is your answer. He's just not very good. The Steelers version of La'lynn Polk

We (and the Steelers) really haven't seen enough of him to tell how good he is or not.

He was injured almost his entire rookie season, only played in the last regular season game and I don't think he was targeted in that (could be wrong but he didn't make a catch).

I drafted him in several dynasty leagues based on an impressive highlight reel (I thought he had the potential to be the next Hines Ward). I will continue to hold him and see how things shake out in training camp. The fact that the Steelers didn't address the WR position in the draft was an encouraging sign (perhaps the only one).

Steelers essentially drafted Metcalf(2nd rd).
He could be WR3 there, if he shows up healthy and looks the part. If he does, then next year, maybe he is WR2(Pickens could be gone). QB will be an issue, but again, next year they could have a real star in the making via the draft.
There is no NFL tape on him, he didnt do a thing last year. Hurt all year. Getting him and Fatanau back into the mix this year is like extra 1st and 3rd rd picks.
FWIW, we are mid way thru rd 4 of my rookie/FA draft and he is still a FA. I doubt anyone takes him, maybe 7th rd.

Calvin Austin is ahead of him as well.

There has been very little local talk of Roman Wilson which is not a good sign.

Good context with the draft. He's a potential cut for me to make a 4th round pick. That's my hold up... Cutting a guy who was a top 90 pick last year for a 4th rd WR or 6th rd RB from the past draft.

they havent had any activities yet, so not sure what there would be to talk about. Austin is tiny, he was forced into Wilson's role last year, and did a good job, but Wilson was picked in the 3rd rd for a reason. Its tough to predict, esp without knowing who the QB might be. I wouldnt put to much into Wilson, Austin, Bobby Woods, Scottie Miller or my guy Ben Skoronek.

Pittsburgh is a small town but the Steelers rule everything. The lack of any sort of information on Wilson over the past year plus is pretty remarkable. Even with lesser valued picks, 6th rounders and such, there would have been more of a buzz regarding progress and potential. It was eerily quiet regarding Roman Wilson.

It wasn't that quiet, really. Info's out there.

He got hurt, took a while to heal up, and then (according to a very reliable source with access to the team) when finally healthy "he didn't learn the playbook fast enough, Tomlin wasn't confident he could play him, so he didn't."

Not exactly a "unique" experience I suppose, when it comes to rookies, but also not great either. Hopefully he spent the offseason with his head jammed into their playbook. Both Pickens and Austin III are free agents in a year, so snaps should be there to be had.

He was a bad pick by the Steelers and most people said that as soon as he was taken. He profiled poorly in college, terrible route runner, terrible at creating seperation, he's undersized and can't get off the line against even minimal press. His "breakout" didn't come until senior year, and breakout is in quotations because it was only 48 for 789 which includes post season and playing with JJ McCarthy at QB. He's a speed slot receiver who can't even win against zone, and on the chance he does, he goes down on first contact. If it wasn't for his incredible luck/timing of lighting it up at the senior bowl he would have been a late 4th or 5th round pick instead of a late 3rd. I'd be supremely surprised if he ever even puts up a WR3 season in the NFL. At this point I think it's more likely he doesn't even make it to the end of his rookie contract without getting cut.

With this Pickens trade it looks like he'll get a fair shake at snaps this season. I won't hold my breath on it amounting to anything though.

Michigan threw about 15 times a game that year. I'll take a flyer on Wilson with my last pick in rookie/FA drafts. And then the next day the Steelers sign some fossil like Amari or Lazard.

We will have to agree to disagree, but that's not what I recall seeing from his highlight reel (although I didn't actually view any of his games, so maybe I'm was misled by these "Best of RW" compilations). But what I saw impressed me enough to draft him in 3 of my 6 dynasty leagues.

And one must admit that over the years the Steelers have been a pretty good judge of talent at the WR position and they thought enough of Wilson to take him in the 3rd round (maybe they whiffed here, we will see).

Lol, it was about 22, but point very much taken. They had far from what we'd call an explosive passing game. I think the issue was more he still only hit like a 20% receiving share of that anemic offense. I remember when scouting that class I kept hearing the excuses for the poor passing game, which are valid, but that he was still "their leading WR!". And then I looked it up and saw that it's technically correct, he led the team with 48 receptions.... by 1 lol. Cornelius Johnson (who?) had 47, and Loveland had 45. I'd say at best it was a three headed monster, but that monster was kinda small and fluffy and squeeked instead of growled hah.

With the Pickens trade, I can see a flier on Wilson. But I think best case scenario is him as the third look behind DK and Friermuth, where I'd instead bet Calvin Austin is really that number 3 look. And to your point, I also would be surprised if they don't add a vet who winds up kicking Wilson down to 4/5th option at least to start the season. I think I'd find a few handfuls of guys I'd rather take a flier on then him; at least one on a team that has a starting QB who's name isn't Mason Rudolph.

Very true, and I could be wrong here or at the very least have an opinion which isn't the most prominent; but I gave most, if not all, of that credit of continually hitting on mid round WRs to their GM at the time Kevin Colbert. He was unfortunately not there for this draft, so I was much less excited and betting against their WR luck streak continuing.

Well just saw this blurb this morning and it definitely piqued my interest:

*************
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports the Steelers are “counting on” a 2025 jump for WR Roman Wilson.
Wilson, per Fowler, “looks like a different player than from his injury riddled rookie campaign.” Steelers general manager Omar Khan said in February that the team has “a lot of confidence” in Wilson, the 84th overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft who played just five offensive snaps as a rookie after suffering a serious hamstring injury in October. Wilson, entering his age-24 season, had 789 yards and 12 touchdowns on 49 catches in his final season at Michigan. He was 19th among all college wideouts in yards per route run in 2023. An injury-free offseason could position Wilson as the clear No. 2 receiver behind DK Metcalf in 2025.

Certainly not holding my breath but my 7 FFPC dynasty rookie drafts are currently between the 4th and 7th rounds and Wilson is available in all of them. In our 1QB Sharkpool league I moved two future 5th round picks for the 5.06 OTC and 7.06 and snagged Wilson. See what happens here.
