Orchard Park, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills have played it safe with wide receiver Sammy Watkins all offseason, and they hope the payoff is coming.
Rex Ryan said Monday the Bills have seen enough from Watkins in his limited preseason action to hold him out in the finale against the Lions. Watkins, who had foot surgery in the offseason, is confident he would be able to play if the Bills' Week 1 game against the Baltimore Ravens was this weekend.
Watkins cracked a smile when asked that very question on Monday.
"Yeah, I would score a couple touchdowns," Watkins said with a laugh. "I could go out there and compete and make the plays presented to me. That's the thing with having practiced and getting those reps with Tyrod (Taylor). Getting full speed reps helps me. It doesn't help me I go out there and do things 80 percent or 85. I'm a full speed guy. Right now, I'm trying to get that full speed mentality.
"You can't simulate that but I go against some of the top guys I think, Darby and Stephon Gilmore. I'm not worried about getting open when it's time to play in the game. More so, I need to get in shape, game shape. That's what I'm doing in practice. I'm just going six or seven reps in a row, four plays in a row. And I wasn't doing that in camp. I was going one play here, one play there. I was like, 'Coach, I need to be out there.' In camp I might only need one play, but now I need every rep."
