Writing a Dynasty Rule Book (1 Viewer)

So I am starting a new 10 team IDP dynasty league and am finishing up the rule book. Rosters will be 45 players per team.

I know at some point we will either lose an owner or expand to 12 teams, what are the different procedures for running an expansion draft? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

I would suggest going to 12 owners first of all. 10 is such a low number of teams. Especially for a dynasty league.

As for owners leaving, nothing special there. The new owner should take over the old team with no special favors. In most cases, the team will be awful and the new owner will take it on as a challenge.

As for expansion, I would suggest that the league would have to agree in an overwhelming vote because if you are going to have an expansion draft, then all teams will have to release some players that they would otherwise not release.

As for details on an expansion draft, I can't really help you there. Never done one before. I'd just like to re-emphasize my point above, though. :)

I agree. If you think you're eventually gonna want 12 teams, start with 12.

A lot of leagues get 2 years' worth of leage fees up front, so that if someone really screws up a team and then quits, you can offer the new manager the incentive of having the first year of rebuilding for free. We make owners pay fees for any year that they trade draft picks from. So, if you trade 2008 draft picks this season, you have to pay 2007 and 2008 league fees before the trade can go through, again, just to soften a really sucky situation for a new owner coming in.

I'd also agree that any expansion draft would need near-unanimous consent from all existing owners.

We did a handful of things with our league to assist owner replacement...a few highlights:(1) all owners prepay (non refundable) the subsequent season and remain paid through the subsequent season, so when a new owner comes on board his or her first season with the franchise is paid for

(2) we limit draft pick trades to the subsequent season, to avoid outgoing owners from mortgaging the long term viability of the team
