WTH is wrong with water? (1 Viewer)

I see this Mio "Liquid Water Enhancer" stuff everywhere.

Now, I see there there's a kid's drink called "Aqua Ball" which is "Water, Only Better".

Certain municipal water supply issues aside, when did just drinking water become such an awful way to hydrate?

Yeah. And why do people eat food? An IV drip would be fine. What's with all this need for taste nowadays? Damn hipsters. :hot:

I'm not saying people should only drink water.

Booze. Coffee. Both great. Soda from time to time, go for it.

Those are things we all know aren't healthy in excess.

But people thinking...."hmmmmmm, I need to hydrate myself, but how I will ever stomach this vile substance known as water without some packaged flavor enhancement?" seems a little silly.

And promoting that idea to kids seems like it could be problematic.

So lemonade is a bad thing?

There's a special place in hell for people who drink lemonade.

You talking about the sugar loaded crap sold at grocery stores? Probably not the best thing to drink often.

I guess a cup of sugar or artificial sweetener helps the nasty water go down though.

I'm not a health nut by any means, but promoting the idea that water is an inferior means of hydration seems foolish.

Don't tell anyone but I have started drinking the Miami tap water and it's actually not that bad. They did a big news article on it and they can't find anything that is technically better for you from a bottle of water. I figured the taste would set me straight the 1st time I tried it but actually it doesn't taste bad at all.

Now my wife still needs cases of Evian, that's not gonna change but I am drinking about 32-64 oz of Miami's best daily and saving money by not buying as much bottled water.

& what's with cheese!!?? I mean you've got American, Swiss, goat, cheddar, Brie, etc...

####### food industry giving us all these choices!!

I really don't care what others drink. It's really just the marketing of this sort of thing I find a little off-putting. Not so much the Mio, but this Aqua Ball stuff for kids.

They've apparently solved the incredibly confusing dilemma of how to hydrate children.

Why are you so worried how others quench their thirst?
What else is there to worry about? I already know what teachers make.
:lmao: Touche.
I'm also pretty upset that the dairy industry convinced people that water isn't good enough for cereal.
Water would absorb much faster than milk and turn it to mush pretty quickly.
Surely, Post or General Mills has a better varnish to put on flakes to help with that.

I thought Gatorade solved this mystery in the 90s along with Michael Jordan the greatest hydrator of our generation.

Why are you putting those aside? Water tastes awful in a lot of places now.

Now that I think about my liquid intake, I've gone 2.5 days drinking nothing but filtered water.

I'm out of milk and haven't had my cranberry juice since the weekend.

Mostly it's just a whole other ball of wax. But also because you can buy bottles or jugs of great tasting water, or use a filter to help some situations.

I assume lack of access to suitable drinking water is unlikely to be the reason most would people purchase enhanced water products.

It's usually suitable for drinking, just tastes awful. Mildly chlorinated. And it's a lot easier to bring along a bottle of Mio than to bring along a 5-gallon jug of water or your own filter everywhere you go.

My wife bought a $6,000 water softener/filter. It has an RO filter under the kitchen sink for drinking water. The local MUD has decent tasting tap water, but the post filter/RO stuff is as good as it gets. Added bonus: You can add RO water straight to the fish tank and the guppies don't die! Yippee!!

Aside: Fort Worth has the worst tasting municipal water supply that I have ever tasted.

Tap water is fine with me, although we have a Brita filter at home due to a kind of high mineral content (which bothers my wife). I don't get the concept of buying bottled water. It's water.

What makes you think it's about hydration? People don't think in those terms. People think "I'm a little thirsty, I think I'd like to enjoy a tasty beverage", not "I am slowly dehydrating and if I do not get some pure water into my body I could die". There's no confusion about how to hydrate, there is merely a desire to drink something that tastes good if it's available. Nobody is ending up in the hospital from dehydration because they couldn't figure out water.

For the Aqua Ball, "healthy hydration for kids" is pretty much their entire marketing campaign.

I'm sure the idea is that at least it's not soda or sugar filled juice. While true, I guess, it's still promoting the idea that we need added sweetness to help us stomach the only substance we were definitely designed to drink.

Maybe better than the alternatives*, but it still gives an "Idiocracy" vibe.

*Once again, you know, assuming water isn't one of the alternatives.

Well, yeah. It's just marketing. I think you're making a leap though. I'm with you that their idea is to say "hey, it's not soda or sugar filled juice" - that's the message, certainly. But the leap you're making is to say that "hey, it's not soda or sugar filled juice" is also saying "you need this because water sucks". They're not making a statement about water, they're only making a statement about their product. "Healthy Hydration for Kids". Not "The Only Healthy Hydration for Kids", you know?

I see where you're coming from, and I don't buy that stuff for my own kids [very often], but I don't think they're going as far as you might think they are.

You've had longhorns $hitting in the rainwater for 200 years. No wonder it tastes crappy.

Fair point.

I am leaping a bit.

I agree with your premise that everything that goes into your pie hole doesn't necessarily need to be salty, sweet, or whatever. Drinking plain water is a great, healthy habit.
