So here is my situation. I currently have an X-Box 360(bought it around 2007). My original plan was to wait until the system dropped in price, but now I really want to get one. I mainly use it for light gaming after work and Netflix.  I was originally a ps1 and ps2 guy that mainly played RPGs, shooters and sports.

they are both fantastic machines.  Typically if you co-op, pick the system your friends have.  Other than that, you won't go wrong with either.

I have both, well I've bought both.  My son plays a ton of x-box, he also plays a bit on the PS4.  It's a tough call.  Honestly, I bought the PS4 just for racing games (GranTurismo) but my son ended up really getting into the whole Forza series (which is for XBox only) plus the sports series (Madden, Basketball, etc.) so he mostly plays XBox one.  However, there's some sort of MLB game he bought just for the PS4, he plays that one quite a bit.  I bought an external drive for the XBox One so he runs all the games from hard drive on Xbox plus now he watches youtube on there, chats with some of his school buddies but he's not really into the FPS games so I'm not sure about that.  I think most of his buddies have Xbox so I think that's why he's more into that. Probably not helpful but there you go.  Honestly, to me, it's six one way and half a dozen the other.

I had both last gen but went with just the XBone this time around.  Even after all this time the interface is still rough around the edges and the console has lots of little annoying technical hiccups.  But ultimately for me it came down to the controller, which I like a lot better on the Xbox, and the Gears of War franchise which is one of my favorites.  I literally haven't played any other games since Gears 4 came out, which was almost a year ago now.

If you don't play Gears or don't have a preference on the controller, it seems like the PS4 is the more polished console.

I had both last gen, and both this gen. In both generations, I found Xbox superior. Reasons why:

1) Controller is a good amount better, imho.

2) Interface is slightly better

3) Connecting w/ friends is slightly better.

That said, they are both good machines, and each has enough exclusives to make fans say "yea but" (if you like Baseball, PS4 is a no-brainer. If you like Gears and Halo, it's Xbox).

I have both. Have played both. I like the PS4 exclusives like Uncharted and Horizon: Zero Dawn.

But the advantages of the XB1 are built in 4K Blu Ray player and backwards compatibility with likely most of your 360 games.
