Why exactly are we talking to John Danks???

:X :X :X

I guess you never can have enough pitchers with a 1.5 WHIP!
 Hes 26 year old lefty with a decent contract and hasnt had a 1.5 WHIP since his rookie year. His WHIP the last 4 years... 1.23, 1.28, 1.22, 1.34. Last year was the first yr since his rookie year he had an ERA over 4... 3.32, 3.77, 3.73, 4.33. Solid K/9 rate... 7.0And all that pitching in a HR hitting ballpark. Honestly, I dont know whats NOT to like about him? Are you sure you arent MOP and just never heard of him?
I go by what I've seen recently. I don't care what he did three years ago.Every time I watched him pitch last year (and believe me, I bet on him/watched him a lot)... he got RAKED!

Yeah I agree, I don't know how anyone can't like Danks. Had a horrific start to his '11 season and still finished with respectable stats. Can't go all ape#### over one sub-part season in what has been a promising start to his career so far. Young lefty, strikes guys out. I'm in.

Danks > Phil Hughes
danks would be the second best pitcher on the yankees

According to George A. King III, the Yankees are shopping A.J. Burnett at this week's Winter Meetings.
:lmao: No ####. :lmao: As a Tiger fan I'd tell you Danks would be a good get. I've always liked his style. He's a gamer who would do well with a little run support, which NY would give him of course.

Believe it or not AJ Burnett should still have value around the league. Just wait and see the kind of deal Edwin Jackson gets. And if the Yanks eat a good portion of the contract (saw they were willing to eat $8m of the remaining $33mil), AJ would be similarly priced.

•The Yankees' chances of signing Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes are "slim to none," according to Marc Carig of the Star-Ledger
I thought the Yankees were hot for Yoenis. Is that not true?
where would he play?
In AAA to start the season. Swisher is a FA next year and from what I've read, many teams are calling on NY for a potential trade including Swish. If Cespedes is someone the Yankees really want, they'd make it happen. I read earlier this week that the Yankees were very high on the Cuban. So I'm wondering what has changed.

Yankee fans:

Have you read this piece at Deadspin about Howie Spira?

I knew the guy's name, and connected it to Steinbrenner, but I had no idea about the details of this guy's life.

What a horrible train-wreck of a life.

On one hand he extorted both Steinbrenner and Dave Winfield, and stiffed the Mafia over gambling debts, and lived to tell about it. On the other, he is a sad little pathetic man who lives in the basement of his parent's home.

EB I did read the spira stuff when it came out. I have a hard time generating sympathy for him but what is fascinating recently to me is the Steinbrenner and the Feds stuff. Good reporting from deadspin that is still developing. How could NY newspapaers not have done that same due diligence?

Deadspin and other outlets like Yahoo Sports have been eating the MSM's lunch (including ESPN) for some time now.

Thank god Jorge is hanging em up.

I would have sucked to see him spend his last year hitting .215 for the Royals or Whitesox.

Agreed. I'd slot Posada just after Munson and just ahead of Howard.

Posada was an odd Yankee in that he was an intense gamer, always had his teammates' backs, and fans liked him. But despite all the time spent with the team, you didn't get the sense that he was beloved for awhile. He was very old school, not really into the fun-loving ways of some of today's players (such as when he didn't take kindly to the walkoff pie in the face courtesy of A.J. Burnett in mid-2009). But the upper deck crew loved the Hip Hip Jorge chant and you always got the sense that he was willing to run through a wall for the team.

Obviously the indelible image was the game-tying bloop against Boston in 2003 and then letting out a primal scream as he stood on second base. But some of his other key moments that aren't as talked about were the tag he made on Jeremy Giambi during the Jeter flip play (probably one of the only times he made the quick catch and tag that he was generally awful at), his home run during that same game which provided the only Yankee run, his walkoff against Texas in 2006 to cap a comeback in which they trailed 10-1, and catching Wells' perfecto in 98. Unfortunately one of my other lasting memories is also his groundout against Beckett to end the 2003 World Series but that could've been anyone.

All in all, he was a great leader and a hugely underrated part of the team during the early 2000's. A lot of times, the team seemed to go as he went and I'll look back fondly on his time in NY.

ETA: Somehow forgot about him hitting the first HR at the new stadium, which my wife reminded me of and how we were both there. :bag:

One of the biggest things Im gonna miss about Jorge is his adorable son and his scorching hot wife. I hope thats not the last weve seen of them

I'm gonna miss Piss-hands!

I loved Posada, one of my favorite Yankees growing up, and that bloop double against the Sawx is ingrained in my memory forever!

Hip-Hip!

A little acknowledgement and a tip of the hat to a departing pitcher....

Tim Wakefield

Career vs the Yanks

12-18

255 innings

5.01 ERA

1.44 whip

44 home runs allowed

Numbers are worse than I would have expected, it definitely felt like there were years when Wake had the Yankees number and years where they banged him around pretty good.

But in either case, another character in the rivalry that peaked in 2003-4 leaves us, joining Posada this offseason. Varitek can go jump in a lake, but Wake is a guy you have to respect for guile, guttiness and pure determination to stay in the bigs. I wish he would have come back and have the funniest feeling we haven't seen the last of him, but if this is it, Godspeed Wake. A model for us all on the power and glory of reinvention in this life.
