Yet more fuel for the Steelers / Bengals rivalry (1 Viewer)

Carson Palmer this week:

As for the Steelers, Palmer, who said he rooted against them throughout the playoffs and was upset when they won the Super Bowl, pulls no punches in the story.

“I keep thinking about how much, back in college, I hated UCLA,” he says. “I hate the Steelers more than I hate UCLA. Yeah, it’s because I’m jealous and want what they have.”

The Bengals quarterback said he didn’t hesitate to speak so openly in the magazine about his hatred for the Steelers because “it’s how I felt. It’s how everybody in our locker room feels. It’s a heated rivalry between local teams. It’s great. I don’t hate playing them. I love playing them. I love the passion and emotion that surrounds the game. I don’t think any rival likes each other or cheers for each other. I hope they lose every game and I’m sure they hope we lose every game.
Larry Foote responds:

"Carson Palmer only beat us one time, so he should hate us," said linebacker Larry Foote, who knows the Steelers are 4-1 against the Bengals in the Palmer era. "I'd hate a team, too, if I only beat them one time and (lost) in the playoffs."

I asked Foote to gauge the Bengals' bitterness toward the Kimo von Oelhoffen hit that blew out Palmer's knee early in the Steelers' playoff victory.

"They self-destructed and started crying," Foote said. "But, you know, that's the game. People get hurt. You just have to get yourself together, get your composure. They lost it. ... When teams are forcing your will on you, it's going to make you do crazy stuff."

...

"They can do whatever," Foote said. "They know deep down inside what we bring to the table. They know it, and they're just not ready yet. Our coaches and our players were just a step ahead of them. Hopefully, we keep it going. We're going to play them twice again and maybe in the playoffs. I'm looking forward to it."
This coming season is going to be a lot of fun!

Since when did this become a rivalry?
I guess since Cincy got decent....
:goodposting:
what is the combined record last two years? how many playoff wins? I am not a steeler fan, but I think you have to prove it longer than a year and a half. Yes, the Bengals had a good year last year and look to be good this year. If the Bengals have another good year and can split the season series, then sure we can talk about rivalry. In the last two years, the Steelers have won three of the four regular season games. When we talk rivalry, I think of a long-standing series where the outcome is in doubt. I think of Chiefs/Raiders or Cowboys/Redskins, etc.

ETA: Since when is being decent for one year a rivalry make?

The Bengals have had how many winning seasons in the last 10? In fact, 1988 was the last year the Bengals had a winning season. The Steelers have had 13 winning seasons in the same timeframe (since 1988). My point is the the Bengals seem to be heading in the right direction, but it is premature to call this a rivalry.

Here are some Bengal stats: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/cinindex.htm

Here are the Steeler stats: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/pitindex.htm

Gotta cut the AFC North some slack. I mean, they may call the Steelers-Browns a rivalry, but it won't be a meaningful one until the Browns somehow remember they're an NFL team. The Ravens want to be the Steelers hated rival, but they remind me more of when Jacksonville and Pitt used to play twice a year. Meh. Bengals-Browns? Ravens-Bengals? Not much out there for quality rivals. Gotta go with Steelers-Bengals since, well, since the Oilers aren't around any more I guess....

As a Steeler fan I get pumped up for every division game. Even when the Bengal’s sucked I'd look forward to playing them. You really can't look at records either when these division games happen. Sure there are the absolute blowouts, but these games tend to be pretty good entertainment and every Steeler fan feels twice as bad if we lose to any of the division opponents. They might not be "rivalries" by some people’s standards, but we've been playing them for so long it doesn't really matter what that year’s records are. They become big games.

I like how Palmer means he hates them as a compliment but Foote completely misses it and says they're crying. Jackass....

Was that Foote's foot in Joey Porter's mouth? What Palmer said was what a competitor would say.... what Foote said is bulletin board fodder, and pretty classless. I wonder which toe Foote got his SB ring sized for? His head has swelled so bad, it seems his fingers might be too big for a ring too! I'd guess that Foote also thinks the refs did a good job in the Supe? Is there some stoooopid ingredient in the water in Pittsburgh all of a sudden?

I think that so long as Chad Johnson and Joey Porter are part of their respective teams, there's no lack of bulletin board fodder for either team. It's a wash.

The Bengals, no matter how much they sucked, would often show up against the Steelers. I remember one year (98 or 99-ish and I don't feel like looking it up) when the Bengals went 3-13. Two of those wins were against the Steelers. One of those two wins came in the next-to-last game of the season (and the Steelers' last home game) that I attended, and the Steelers needed some teams to lose for a shot at the playoffs. I looked at the out-of-town scoreboard and, sure enough, those teams were losing. And then I looked back to the field where the two and mother####ing 12 Bengals were beating the Steelers, and I felt some pretty solid hatred.

I hate that team. I'm glad they're doing well so my hate feels more legitimate since I can actually respect them now.

Who is Larry Foote? Shouldn't a decent player be the one running his mouth?
Larry Foote is the same classless clown who was seen dancing on the field right after Kimo's hit on Palmer's knee. And he certainly wasn't celebrating the 66-yard completion to Henry.

And thank the football gods for that.... it'd be a much duller place without yahoos like them. :banned:

Competitiveness, the sports connotation as "having a shot to win something big", or "be in the hunt to" has nothing to do with a rivaly's establishment.

The modern Army-Navy rivalry is an excellent example, but generally, "fraternity" is what makes "competition."

The Browns-Steelers are storied, ancient football teams in similar geographic proximity and conference and division...

...I remember hugging many a Brown's fan at the "last" Steeler home game versus them in... was it 1999ish?

...Just as I remember a 51-0 shelacking by them on the road in the opening game in 1993ish.

...To when we swept 'em three times on our way to the AFC Division Championship game in 1994? 1995?

The years might be a little fuzzy to me, but back when we weren't competitive against the entire NFL during the modern era (80s into the early 90's), the season wasn't a total loss if as long as we beat the Browns first, then the Bengals second, and the Oilers third--and hopefully make a showing in the playoffs. We didn't actually expect our team to make the playoffs, but we expected our team to beat the Brownies and Bungels.

Fraternity.

And damn if we don't cheer for our rivals in the playoffs when they were the ones who knocked us out of 'em...

Fraternity.

ETA: We Dey, MF! :towelwave:
