Week 12 1986

Chicago Bears(9-2) vs Green Bay Packers(2-9)

Chicago is coming off of a 15-1 1985 season which they won the Super Bowl.

Bears starting QB Jim McMahon comes into the game with a sore right throwing shoulder.

Packers DE Charles Martin enters the game with a hit-list of Bears offensive players that he wanted to hurt See picture for details

Just watch, makes me sick

-Also watch all the high fives he gets after the play at the end of the clip. Looks very "discouraged".

This directly led to Chicago not being a contender in the playoffs and to repeat their Super Bowl of 1985.

It was a dirty hit for sure. What makes you think a bounty was involved?
It was more than dirty, 4 seconds after the ball was let go.The encouragement on the lead me to believe it wasn't frowned upon by teammates, would that include money...who knows.

Link to the part where he got paid by the Packers for all that.

I would venture to guess that the concept of bounties has been around for a long time. I'm pretty sure there have been bounties for making big plays. I don't know if it would have been very common to put one in for injuries. The problem in this case is they got caught and it has become a huge public nightmare. The NFL isn't going to have any choice but come down hard on this one to save face.

I didn't know about the issues between Eagles/Cowboys in the late 80's - early 90's, no.

If you can't read between the lines then your :homer: glasses are coke bottles.-A cellar dweller team vs a Super Bowl contender

-Late in the season

-Most dirty play i've ever seen

-Ends starting QB's season on super bowl contener

-High Fives on the sideline from the cellar dweller team

Yeah absolutely no coincidence

And what does this have to do with what the Saints did? Is this supposed to make us think they shouldn't be nailed? I don't find "but they did it fiiiiirst!" to be a persuasive argument.

So you create a thread about how bounties have been around for awhile, but instead of referencing games actually referred to as "bounty bowls" you chose a game where the packers ruined yet another bears season. Who's the homer?

So, since the Packers are owned by their fans, lets ban Packer fans from the NFL for life! Sounds like a plan to me!!

I never said such a thing and i'm not sure what the penalty should be. Charles Martin only got suspended for 2 games for this incident.

You clearly didn't watch the play
I did and it's a dirty play. Finding a bit hard to believe that the intent here is to shed light on the prevalence of bounty systems in the past. Looks more like a bears fan decided to throw a little mud in the direction of a rival.

1) Intent is to show it was possible in this instance.2) It brought forth the other bounty-bowl posts as well.3) If you don't like discussions and searching for a fishing trip look elsewhere.

I thought you were saying there was a bounty paid by the team. Obviously what was done was wrong. I don't think there is anything or anyone disputing that. But that was a person doing something, not an entire organization doing it. There is a big difference. It was cheap shot and a weak cowardly act. I don't think you'll find many Packer fans in disagreement with that.

The title of your thread would indicate that you view it as more than a possibility.

You are indicting an entire organization for using bounties based in your perceived "possibility".

I enjoy discussion. Discussion based around topic that has substance. This is merely a feable attempt by a bears homer to smear the reputation of a rival. We have plenty of that nonsense here.

I think 1954 was the first documented bounty and it wasn't even in the NFL...

I mean that's the only explanation right...

Typically when someone writes something, it comes from their brain. Must not be the case when those words come from their ###.

you should check out the footage of the Packers Bryce Paup and his late hit on Cunningham too. Seems to be a trend with them...Oh and the "new" commercial with Mean Joe Greene throwing his jersey to a fan... its a re-make.

Systemic issue involving a prominent member of the coaching staff = nope.Told to stop it by the league...said he would...then kept doing it = nope.Same time frame of the NFL currently trying to push player safety = nope. The guy was a dirty player...thats about it.

Ditka thought it was coached"And it was ugly. You can't try to hurt people and they tried to hurt some of our guys. (Running back) Matt Suhey is lucky he didn't get hurt badly. And when McMahon was picked up by Charles Martin and thrown down, he was lucky he wasn't hurt very badly.

"These things were after the play, after the fact. So either you are coaching that or your players are stupid. That's what I'm going to say. In this case I believe they were coached. That's why I never got along with Forrest Gregg. To this day I don't respect him for that reason. . . . When the play is over and you pick somebody up and slam them on the ground. 'Oh, big deal' (Martin says). I'm a tough guy.' You're not a tough guy. You're a dumb guy."

In the next link it's indicated that Gregg told them to go beyond the rules.

Read pg 180 "Packer Whackers"

Well if Ditka said it...and a former Bear player said he thought he heard it through the grapevine that it was coached...then it must be just like the Saints...never mind the complete different era of the NFL and what was considered acceptable behavior and all.

Face it...you are grasping at straws here and everyone has pointed this out to you...not just Packers with their homer glasses on.

His profile says packers fan.Either way, no I don't have proof they got paid. If I did, then the current Saints would be repeating a past big issue in the NFL instead of getting caught for the first time. Kind of like Steroids with Bonds, but people found out about Canseco etc.

I thought it had a coincidence, maybe it didn't. In the end it's a message board.
