Looks like ESPN unlimited will eventually come with the base subscription.

I'm sure it'll mean a price increase, but that's good news (to me).
Hated Hulu generally, but it was nice having the ESPN+ stuff.

I was planning to get ESPN Unlimited along with YTTV, at least during college basketball season.

Of course, this is probably bad overall, and trending back towards essentially a cable model of paying for a bunch of stuff you don't want again is where we're heading.

But I've given in to the inevitable. I cut traditional cable 15 years ago, and it was a great run with so many great savings. But it was always heading back to some form of paying too much for stuff we don't want.

If you can get by on Netflix and an antenna, great, but if you care about sports, they were always going to find a way to get your dollar.

But it's still way better than traditional cable, as long as it remains easy to cancel. The ease cancellation has always been just as big of a draw as the cost.
As long as there's some competition (though there's not much now), and the ability to cancel with the click of a button, that's still some progress.

I wish the kids growing up now could understand the irritations of having to speak to 8 different customer service representatives and pack/ship big hunks of plastic to cancel a cable provider.

Price increase on deck
Not sure. The statement from Disney said available to yttv subscribers for no cost. I was trying to think how that would benefit them and it could be that if we all get their app they can generate some ad revenue and possibly pick up subscribers to their other services.

It might have also been built into how much Google paid them.

I'm very sure the cost will go up

However it's portrayed

It always goes up. Whether it goes up from this remains to be seen. I'd think no price increase for another year.

I think I've mentioned this before, but ESPN Unlimited is part of the DTV package (at least at the Choice level). Also, I'm paying less for DTV than I was for YTTV (caveat: I'm counting the cost of a separate RSN; YMMV).
What exactly is ESPN unlimited
Basically all the ESPN content for $30/month. Branded ESPN's, ESPN Plus stuff, ACC/SEC Networks. Some other stuff I'm forgetting probably.

ESPN Plus is now ESPN Select ($13/month).

But I'm getting all that on yttv currently....just confused how I need ESPN unlimited if it gets included when I have the whole suite now

Is there more streamed than what I get on the 9 channels? Besides ESPN+

I sure think so. A ton more.

It's not just the channels, it's all of the games going on that aren't on YTTV. Sunday nights are pretty light w/r/t live sports, but I just put on the Islanders at Avalanche game. I'm not in New York or Colorado, so I'm not getting these on an RSN. It's ESPN unlimited.

Yeah, I'm sure "at no extra cost" just means you get that programming without having to pay anything on top of the regular YTTV price, not that it's not going to cause that price to go up.

You're not confused. When I said I was planning on getting ESPN Unlimited as a complement to YTTV, I really meant ESPN Select (formerly ESPN Plus).

Gotcha yeah I still have plus through my phone provider

I know I'm late to the game vis-a-vis cable cutting. But just realized I've gone 9 months and still haven't paid full price. Even when it goes back up I'll still be $125 less a month with all the same service/pay channels.

I am missing a couple like MLB network, NHL Network but I didn't watch them much

If yttv wasn't "cable like" it would have been a tough switch for the family

I was a Youtube TV guy for probably 3 or 4 years? I canceled about 10 days ago due to the ESPN debacle. I really only watch live television for sports (Easily more than 75% of my live TV viewing).

I switched to DirecTV Stream. I signed up for the "MySports Genre Pack." You get all of your local channels, the big cable news stations and then essentially every decently sized channel that broadcasts sports. ESPN Unlimited is also included.

I'm saving over $30 a month even after my trial price expires with DirecTV.

The DirecTV Genre Pack is certainly fewer overall channels, but when I really examined what I actually watch, I was paying for a bunch of stuff I literally never watched with YTTV.

Back when this started, Pablo Torre did a podcast on the issue with John Skipper and David Samson.

According to them, the hang up was that Google wanted to pay less for ESPN than other providers were paying. Google's rationale being that they are the fastest growing cable provider, so they should get a discount. Again, according to SKipper/Samson. I have no idea if it's true, though I don't have any reason to doubt them.

Obviously, Disney (and of course the other cable providers) did not like that idea.

Anyway, just putting that out there.

I know we were discussing which soulless mega-corporation that doesn't care about you deserved more of the blame on this issue, and a lot of people (including myself) were putting more of the blame on Disney.

That's what the original ESPN version of the issue was and not what Google said so I don't know anymore lol

Which pack(s) did you pick? Was looking at the options, but it seems when I add the packs that I watch, I'll end up spending more than what I currently spend with YTTV.

Maybe they were right, but you don't think Skipper might have some bias there?

The one thing that would have made it a lot easier transition for my dad would be if they could somehow incorporate channel numbers. :lmao:
This seems like no big deal but it really does have an impact. For example, there is no way to flip direct to ESPN (or whatever channel you want). You must go to the live guide and scroll down until you get to the channel you want. Then if you want to go to something else you have to go back to guide and then scroll around the guide until you get to the next channel you want.

With numbers I could just punch in 206 and go right to ESPN or 245 and right to TNT. Much quicker.

Partially agree but there are quicker ways than you mention

First customize your guide order that is a must.

Second if you hold down the "select/enter" button for 3 seconds on whatever streaming remote you use it takes you to the last channel

Third and a big one, when watching a channel if you press down twice the Networks option shows up. That gives the last 10 or so channels you watched. And then if you keep scrolling right if will start going through your guide order.

So not ideal you can get to your channels way quicker than going to the main guide.

I usually pop through a few channels I plan to watch and have them at the ready

And finally I bought a $10 universal remote for my wife's tv upstairs. The reason was so she can use the channel up/down button to change channels like a tv

I do miss some stuff about the Xfinity guide/channel surfing for sure (numbers )but I can get around pretty quick now

I have done that but doesn't help when I want to go to a channel that is 20 deep.

I know this one. I use it for the NFL Ticket to toggle between games. Works well. Game changer once I found out about this last year. But doesn't help for more than just two channel toggling.

Oooooh.........This is new. I must try it. This will help a lot as I am usually bouncing between a few things. This will really help on Sundays so I don't have to just bounce between two games.

You can push down on the remote and quickly jump to the channels you like without the guide

Sure he could.

I was just pointing to the episode as it provided some info (right or wrong) on what the issue was in the negotiation.

Again, I have no idea.
Just hadn't really seen much other info on what the real differences were in the negotiations.

If it's complete ********, I apologize. Well, Pablo apologizes, I guess.

They do a really good job of hiding it on their website. There's a difference between their packages and the Genre Packs. I got the MySports Genre Pack - it is a stand-alone option for service instead of the more common "Choice Package."
