First part(8 episodes) of season 5 of Breaking Bad is on instant now. Also the Bond movies are back on with 20 titles. Titanic, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and Zodiac among others just started up.
Also, the final season of Fringe in now streaming
So what's the deal with Fringe. I hear lots of good and bad reviews for it. Worth watching? Is it over? I watched the first couple of episodes and gave up on it but I heard it got a lot better after a while.

Think it's a great choice when you want something light. It starts to become more serialized as the series progresses and really picks up steam. Walter Bishop is a classic character.

Think this show would have been huge hit if it had come out 5-10 years prior. Seems like it got lost in the shuffle when cable stations started pumping out great content. Kind of like what happened with Friday Night Lights.

I watched the first few episodes when it first came out and quit like you did. I wish I would have stuck it out. Started watching it again round 6 months ago. It gets really good in Season 2 and 3. 4 was a crapshoot but Iheard good things about the final season

I really like the show for its story arcs but it had to many monster of the week episodes for my taste.

Wife and I are late to the party, just got Netflix, and we have lots of TV to catch up on. We've heard The Wire and Breaking Bad are series we must watch (I think we have to watch Wire on HBOGO, which is no problem). I assume all here would agree.

What are the other top shows on Netflix if you were to recommend a top 5 or so?

TIA

Screw you Netflix. Season 5 was pulled until Sept 12th
You sure, the episodes still work for me.
Got an email from Netflix saying sorry not until Sept 12th and I just checked on my Netflix. Only goes to Season 4

The Wire is the best TV series Ive ever seen, and I know there are plenty of FBGs in agreement with that. I thought nothing would surpass The Sopranos for me, but The Wire did rather easily and before I even finished the series.

If it were 6 months ago, Id say watch BB first because another half season is still to air and you can watch it "live". However, since that last season starts a week from tomorrow, you wont be able to catch up, making The Wire a better choice to start off with.

Then again, maybe you dont want to watch the best TV series ever now before to watch some very good ones first, so those arent disappointing, all things relative.

Ah, you were talking about Fringe ad not Breaking Bad. Apparently they released Fringe early.

Fringe is the opposite of "light", though. It's got one of the more complex mythologies this side of GoT.

I enjoyed house of cards a great deal. Best show I've seen on there.Eta- and it's only one season so it goes pretty quickly.

Top of the Lake

I'm torn on this one. I guess I liked it, but I was annoyed by the soap-opera-ish twists. The show never really improved as you move through the season.

I agree with you, dgreen. I thought the Tui character was acted very well and there was some meat there to work with but I never bought "Peggy" as a cop and her on again, off again accent started to distract me as I waited to hear if she switched it on or off. Also liked Matt, classic troubled bad guy played great by Peter Mullan.

And like you, all the other stuff dealing with relationships and what not was mostly unnecessary and detracted from the better parts of the story. And the Holly Hunter character is soo not needed. You could take her completely out of the mix and the show wouldn't miss a beat.

Overall I liked it but I would recommend The Fall and Hannibal first over Top of the Lake.

1st Episode in to "Top of the Lake". Hooked. Holly Hunter is a crackup.

And the Matt character is a psycho. But

I don't think he is the one that knocked up Tui
3 episodes in, completely hooked as well. Never seen anything like it.
The Holly Hunter scenes and much of the police chief really bring the show down at times. But it does reach some rarified heights. Often too. Deserves all the Emmy nominations it got. The cinematography is on a scale unlike any tv show/miniseries I can think of.

8/10

Mostly done with the first and only season of Firefly. Damn shame this show got cancelled. :kicksrock:

Good characters, good stories, and my god, the eye candy!

I was whelmed by Firefly. It was OK. I can think of a lot better SciFi TV shows then this one

Such as? I'm not a big scifi guy, so I'll take a recommendation or two.
Star Trek Original Series

Star Trek the Next Generation

Chuck

Jericho

Battlestar Galactia

Alien Nation

Futurama

Torchwood

Dr. Who

Quantum Leap

Fringe

The Twilight Zone

X-Files

Wow, The Fall is definitely a good watch. I didn't realize it was so few episodes and was bummed when I noticed I reached the final episode. Sounds like season 2 won't be until next year sometime.

Nothing to do with what you're asking here, but you should watch "Red, White & Blue". Odd little movie filmed in Austin.

Saw it. Man, that last third was brutally violent.

I'd give it 3.5/5.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.

Really good movie. It doesn't clue you into what point it's getting at... but woah.

Is Portlandia any good? I thought the first one was funny but the next two were so so.

Also, does Weeds get better. Thought the first two were just ok.

Have watched so many good movies and tv series from recommendations here. Would like to get opinions on the tv show Jericho from those that have watched the entire series. Great, good, worth watching, poor, or awful?
Good, worth watching, but not a top 10 show or anything.
I enjoyed Jericho. Just finished it yesterday and kind of wishing it wasn't over. Now I'm looking for something else to get in to.

Weeds has a terrible middle. I'd advise skipping seasons 4 and 5, and maybe 6 too.

I'm a big fan of Portlandia. It definitely helps to live in a city with a significant hipster population; otherwise, I think you may miss some of the jokes. As others said, it can be hit or miss at times, but I think it is a truly original satirical comedy.

Weeds does not get better after Season Two. I think the first two seasons were probably the best two seasons of the entire series. It will get dramatically worse around Seasons 4 and 5. I thought Season 6 was alright, but Seasons 7 and 8 were nearly unwatchable. If you are not enjoying Weeds by the end of Season 2, you shouldn't feel too bad cutting bait at that point.

Finally finished the last two episodes of this. Really strong overall, despite an unsatisfying ending to the season. I'm glad they decided to push on with a second season. There are a lot of ways this could go.

Call the Midwife

I'll continue to pimp this show as it's very underrated. Highly recommended to fans of British period dramas such as Downton Abbey.

Netflix Will Get an Exclusive First-Run Pay TV Window on Weinstein Company Films Starting in 2016As Netflix, Amazon and Hulu tussle from streaming audiences, the ability to be the exclusive home of certain content is becoming almost as important as offering original series. Want to watch season three of "Downton Abbey"? You have to head to Amazon Prime Instant Video. Care to browse the Criterion Collection? Go to Hulu Plus. And starting in 2016, you'll need a Netflix subscription to stream new releases from The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films when they first finish up their theatrical runs.

Netflix and the Weinstein Company today announced a new multi-year licensing deal to make Netflix the exclusive pay TV home to first-run TWC films starting in 2016. Starting that year, theatrical releases from TWC and Dimension will spend their pay TV window at Netflix and Netflix only.

Netflix already offers TWC documentaries and foreign films, as well as many Radius titles, in their pay TV window. "Harvey and Bob Weinstein are in a class to themselves when it comes to choosing and producing the best films in the world," said Netflix's Ted Sarandos in the announcement. "They are as innovative in business as they are creative in their storytelling. We look forward to reinventing the pay TV window with the Weinsteins."

“The deal that we’ve just completed with Netflix is probably the biggest deal in the history of The Weinstein Company and together, we are discussing ways to reinvent the pay TV experience so that the audience can get even more for their money,” added Harvey Weinstein. “Their enthusiasm for movies of all kinds was the big factor in our choosing Netflix. Moving forward when people see The Weinstein Company name on a movie they know that our pay TV partner is the most significant new force in the entertainment industry - Netflix."

Whats a "pay TV window"?

Memorial Day

Very enjoyable. Had this in my queue for quite a while, finally got around to watching it. One of the better "unheard ofs" that I have seen in some time.

Dredd - Watched it this weekend. I'm not sure why this got such good reviews. Maybe I missed something by not having it in 3d - but it wasn't that good. Its also basically the same story as The Raid: Redemption. But that movie was a lot better. It just wasn't that good - not even in a dumb, fun way.
