GM's Thread About Everything/GM's Thread About Nothing (15 Viewers)

For those of you doing a virtual holiday party, do you at least get free food (can expense up to $x for food during the "party")?  A company I worked for a years ago had a holiday party somewhere not local for some employees so for those of us who couldn't go, they let us expense our dinners that night.

completely, exactly the same for me and my wife

then she gets aggravated if I don't answer her when she isn't even talking to me more than half the time anyway ...
every 30 seconds just say "uh huh", "yeah" or "oh."   Didn't your fathers teach you anything?   My dad has been pretending to be deaf for 30 years so he doesn't have to listen to my mom.

Got myself a pre-Xmas gift...an onsale Roomba...so I don’t have to listen to the misses complain about sweeping up after our nine year old.  Slap it high?

My wife was going through her mom’s place yesterday trying to go through things to find the important stuff to keep and get everything else ready to get rid of. She found an old photo album that she had never seen before. It had LOTS of old pictures of her grand mother and great grandparents’ family back in Germany and Russia in the 1920s and 1930s. It was pretty cool going through it.

The only thing that sucked is that a lot of it was guesswork trying to figure out who people were. We may be able to figure some of it out if we can get someone that can read German, but a lot of them either have nothing written on the back or what’s written is just dates or obviously notes of where it was taken. My MIL had some really tough things linked to her family history so my wife understands somewhat why her mom never shared the photos with her before, but now that her mom is gone, there is little chance we will ever figure some of that out.

So if you know there are photos like that in your family and someone alive that knows who is in those photos and where/when they were taken, I would highly recommend asking them to write that info on the back of those photos.

Still, pretty cool to have photos of her grandmother as a baby and child and those other ~100 year old photos of her family that she didn’t even know existed.

This is good posting.

Growing up, we lived with my great-great aunt. I can remember several family gatherings where she, her sister, her nieces/nephews, and other assorted relatives would go through boxes of photos and write the names of the folks in the pictures on the back. They couldn't precisely date them all, but could get to - at worst -  a decade. There had to be 1,000s and 1,000s of photos dated back well into the 1800s. My mom and her sisters have them now.

It was kind of funny when my wife mentioned the Russian side of her family. I knew that she was German and that her grandmother had been a teenager in Germany during WWII, but she had never mentioned that her mom’s side of the family was Russian too.

When she mentioned it, I looked at her incredulously and said “yeah, you definitely never mentioned you were German AND Russian! That may have been good info to have BEFORE marrying you..”  :D

I should probably also make clear that her mom’s difficult family history did not reportedly have anything to do with Nazis. My wife’s grandmother was a compulsory member of Hitler’s Youth due to her age and being in Germany at the time, but reportedly would sign herself into the compulsory meetings and then immediately leave and attend church next door, lol. I certainly hope that’s true and that if it isn’t, my wife never learns otherwise.

An article in the New Yorker about the work-world I inhabit, for anybody interested. Definitely paints the picture of the ultra-ultra's projects, where it's never about budget.

I haven't worked with Mark, but I've had him bid on projects before.
That’s an interesting read. Being a Project Manager/ Engineer in Indianapolis has always had its challenges and stressful moments but the things I’ve read and heard about the construction business in NYC has always blown my mind.

Got a work meeting appointment the other day from my boss's boss's, boss's boss - one level below the CIO - for a "Virtual Dirty Santa" tomorrow after lunch.  Now, having recently run across the term, I know that it's the same as a "white elephant" or "yankee swap" gift exchange, where people can steal others' gifts, so I didn't think much of it. But, the term "Dirty Santa" is not commonly used in this part of the country.

Was having a weekly status meeting with my manager today and she says "did you get an appointment yesterday from Scott...?" and it clicks that she has no clue what "Dirty Santa" means, and isn't even sure the e-mail was legit.  So we had a good laugh after I explained it.  She said she was (understandably) afraid to google it on a work laptop.

So I sent an e-mail to the rest of the team to share the explanation, and one guy replies with "Oh. Good thing Amazon takes returns".

I just hope he doesn't show up on this zoom call tomorrow wearing nothing but sleighbells.

huh.  around here "dirty santa" is something exclusive to women, generally fueled by a lot of wine and/or margaritas, and involves gifts that are usually bought at adult toy shops.

So I rarely post anything online anymore.  I'm way out of the loop regarding FBGs. I don't know who is still here, who has dropped off the face of the earth, or who might have had a boot implanted up their backside on the way out the door.

I think I might have made a couple of dozen posts in the last five years.  But I don't even know that for sure.  So my question is this ... is the search function here now just a flaming pile garbage, or am I just too dumb to figure it out?  And yes, these are not mutually exclusive ...

The search function is better than it used to be but still not great.

There was either a massive purge of old threads, or the search function is incapable of finding them ... which might as well be the same thing
Yeah. It’s way bad. It takes me less time and offers less aggravation to go through all of my recent posts to find a thread versus the torture of using the search function and coming away disappointed.
For me, it’s kind of like going to Ace Hardware up the street. It’s close, but unlikely they’ll have what I’m looking for resulting in a visit to HD or Lowe’s. So ultimately going to one of those stores initially, albeit further away, will yield a better result.

I have no recent posts, really.  I have only posted 3-4 times per year for a long time.  And that number is just a guess ... cause the search function sucks I can't tell

Anyway it seems strange not to be able to find the original RBD or Shining Path's memorial thread.  And a ton of other memories

MAXIE!!!

Sac here. Some folks still around.

Search function blows, yes.

How you been, gb?

You can use google to search the forums. In the search box just put in:

site:footballguys.com "shining path"

or whatever you want to find in quotes

Memorial thread comes up in that search

Hey GB!  I'm good.  I'd tell you a good story about where I've been, but involves way to much sex and deviant behavior to be allowed here.  And I would never lie about that.  Never, ever.  Anyway,  I tried to check LABS, but my bookmark sent me to a gambling/Asian porn site.  Oddly enough, I was OK with that.

There have been multiple purges.  But the search feature here has always sucked and been the butt of jokes for years.  Good to see you.

Welcome back, Tanners (and Otises).

Thanks for the welcome, all.

I've spent the last hour reading much of the Russian Bride Draft.  Still makes me laugh.  But the thing that boggles my mind is that was SEVENTEEN years ago.  I remember where I was living then, with my girlfriend (now wife).  This was before smart phones, and our computer was on a table in the living room.   I remember waiting for her to go to bed before searching for potential brides. I didn't know how to explain the draft to her, so I did my best to avoid it.

I have no idea what I was just looking at.
