Disrespecting Donald Trump vs disrespecting the office of the Presidency

I'm not in the arguing mood today. If anyone thinks Democrats aren't behind all of this witch hunting, I don't know what to say about that. GOP was behind trying to bash and tear down Obama, obviously, that's what opposing political parties do sadly.

But this thing going on right now is all time low. Part of that is Trump being who he is, but none the less, Democrats COULD focus on policies etc and not on taxes of faux Russia or this staged whistleblower nonsense. Its all waste - and American's see it IMO

Anyway, public booing at a sports event etc? 100% against that, that's not what a sporting event is supposed to be IMO

Did anyone not expect him to get cheered in Alabama? That’s why he went, he’s apparently deeply hurt that he got booed at the World Series.

This.

His people (or him) really messed up in picking the WAS game to go to.  They should have been smart enough to realize HOU would have been a more favorable town.

An Alabama man was arrested for slashing a 'baby Trump' balloon

Hoyt Hutchinson, 32, was charged with felony first-degree criminal mischief in the incident, according to The Tuscaloosa News. The man had reportedly posted a video on Facebook earlier that day in which he said he wanted to "make a scene."

Supposedly started a "Go Fund Me" before the criminal act of violence.  Per Twitter.  Can't post, not sure his outfit supports the SFW standards.

Is Steak Shapiro still active in the Atlanta market?  He was just getting started when I lived there.

AFAIK, yes - the station he was running merged with the other sports talk station years back but they put him on in the morning with a couple of people.  Always thought he was entertaining but I stopped listening probably 5-7 years ago when things like Pandora and Spotify were emerging.

What if the public is booing a kneeling NFL quarterback?

hmmmm

well its an action of the player in the game ... that's a bit different isn't it ?

like applauding when a hurt player walks off the field on his own power, or booing when a Defensive player body slams a QB etc

I changed the title of this thread because I wanted to widen the discussion a little bit. Where is the line here? Can you boo Trump without booing the office? Suppose Trump wanted to give you a reward and shake your hand? If you refused to shake his hand, are you disrespecting him, or are you disrespecting the United States? Or is there a line at all?

I think it is disrespectful to boo the President.  Obama was considered a far worse President than Trump by a lot of people, myself included.  How would you have felt if Obama was booed?

:goodposting:

Yep, the “it’s different with Trump” excuse is used a lot to try to excuse the childish and out of control behavior since the 2016 election and it’s a bad look. It’s a partisan excuse as you know, and like you mention Obama was not good for many of us but I could not imagine dedicating as much time as many are now to the POTUS hate.

You do realize that there WERE plenty of people dedicated to hating Obama, right? And Bush. And both Clintons. Etc.

I would agree that Trump has received more hatred than any other President in modern times, but he is certainly responsible for much of it. Unless you believe that any Republican President elected in 2016 would have been hated just as much?

I'll just leave this here

For comparison purposes can you confirm about how many threads there were on this, is there a way to look back? We have an accurate count with the current forum on the Trump bashing ones as I believe only a couple could be  considered positive. I would guess the ratio is an outrageous number making the bolded not a very valid comparison to current behavior.

Let’s just stop the comparisons with this president to Obama or any other for that matter.

This guy actively trolls more than anyone in here. He would have been suspended from this place multiple times.

If Obama did a tenth of a percent of the stuff this guy does the board would have been as it is now.

I think back then most political discussion was lumped in to just a few threads - and obviously there was no PSF.  But there’s no doubt if you are just looking here (FBGs) that there’s a lot more bashing of the President now than in the past.  I think Trump brings a lot of that on himself with how he’s conducted himself.  As for positive threads - I don’t remember any positive threads for any Presidents around here.  People like to complain, especially about politicians.

I suppose we don’t know the reaction the board would have had if Obama had this act but he didn’t.

I think you have become numb or choose to ignore the absurd things he says.

I have no doubt you feel this way , you believe its true.

He’s correct, it’s just not true as the board went through Obama and his combative attitude and poor choices and the board didn’t act close to the behavior seen now. It’s just not a valid excuse although it’s used consistently in here.

It is a matter of fact. The board owner has said there are multiple tweets that from Trump that we are not allowed to post here because the are unacceptable.

He would be banned for his childlike nickname tweets alone.

The guy tweeted 80 times yesterday about his football game visit, fake news, Shifty Schiff,  asking for the whistleblower’s name to be made public, on and on. We just act as if this is normal now.

It’s bizzaro world that we live in.

It was certainly different than now. There was this one dude, can’t remember his name but I think he was originally from Australia (I remember he called everyone “mate”) and he started about 5 anti-Obama threads a week. In each one he would only post in the OP; it would be some link to a website like World Net Daily. He would never post again in the same thread.

Then there was the Birther thread- that was seriously ugly. And the original Obamacare thread- that was really ugly as well. Of course the Benghazi thread...-a whole lot of hateful rhetoric. The Obama haters were never a majority here but they were loud and vocal.

Outside of the FFA, in real life...well I live in Orange Country Ca which is still pretty conservative despite our most recent elections. During the Obamacare debate I saw posters of Obama with a Hitler mustache. I had never seen that before for any President.

So yeah I’d say the hatred was bad.

So if the hatred was “bad” before with one poster starting “about 5 threads a week” (although a search only turned up one I could find skimming first 5 pages) how would you rate the hatred now with 40 pages of threads at 50 topics per page with most attacking the POTUS?

A little light considering current POTUS behavior

As a I already wrote I think it’s greater now. But it’s also less mindless IMO. It’s not based on conspiracy theories like Birtherism or what I regard as paranoid fears about Obama turning the USA into a socialist state; the current hatred is based primarily on President Trump’s statements and actions.

That being said, I believe hatred of President Trump is an irrational response, as is hatred of any American President. I dislike Trump intensely, but hatred should be reserved for truly evil persons.

If it's an official event I think you have to respect the office of the presidency. If it's just a public event we are all free citizens and can show our opinions any way see fit as Americans.

However part of the problem is how Trump politicizes neutral events. I remember Schumer saying something about how he told Trump he was happy to agree to xyz behind closed doors but if they did it in public at a mic then it risked Trump doing something embarrassing or different from the agreement so that it would look like Schumer would endorse his actions by standing alongside him.

This is also a little like the Kaepernick situation, please keep my sports out of politics and my politics out of sports. And I think that the Kaepernick issue was working itself out but Trump injected himself, so then it became a loyalty test for Trump supporters. So now he's dragged this from the NFL into college football.

I will say that as much as I am disgusted by Trump I would not boo him at a football game, but as with the kneeling/sitting during the anthem I respect my fellow Americans who choose to show their displeasure.

That’s not true, just a common excuse in here for behavior.

You don't believe it to be true...many others do.  This president's behavior is something we have not seen before.  For many, its quite unacceptable (as are his policies and some of his other actions revolving around lying and courting the help of other nations).

Are any people that attend any rally or protests "everyday regular" people? Pretty sure none of my friends or family have ever been to a rally or protests.

The only protest I would even think about attending would be a prohibition protest.

Why are you having such a hard time with this? Thomas Jefferson wrote that George Washington was senile; John Adam's was accused of being a monarch in waiting; James Madison was called a spineless weasel; John Quincy Adam's was vilified as an illegitimate president; Andrew Jackson was called the equivalent of an illiterate scum bag; John Tyler was called His Accidency and given almost no respect from the leadership class; the Presidents of the Civil War era were gruesomely attacked by their political rivals; Lincoln was assassinated by one; and on and on and on....

Trump isn't new in any of this opposition. President's get booed, cheered, attacked, supported, vilified, condemned, congratulated and every other description you want to use. It's part of the job and the result of our political freedoms of speech, assembly and petition. This isn't rocket science. There is no grand lesson about Trump being booed in New York and cheered in Alabama. It's the nature of the office and a reflection of the polity in that moment, in that location.

So he got booed. Big deal. So he got cheered. Big deal. He won't be the last for either.
