*** OFFICIAL *** COVID-19 CoronaVirus Thread. Fresh epidemic fears as child pneumonia cases surge in Europe after China outbreak. NOW in USA (18 Viewers)

Well, kinda right but mostly wrong.  Swine flu infected 61 million AMERICANS and killed 575k WORLDWIDE.  That is THE definition of mixing apples and oranges.  The figure you SHOULD have used was 13k Americans killed by swine flu.

Carry on.
You're right. I read it quickly.

My point is far more people were infected worldwide yet hospital systems didn't collapse and worldwide panic didn't ensue. The death rate wasn't even my point.

My 20 year old son went to a conference in New Orleans last week. He went back to school and had a mild 24 hour fever that has since broken.

Today he gets this email

A person who attended the NICAR20 conference in New Orleans last week tested positive today with COVID-19.

This attendee has mild symptoms and is expected to make a full recovery. They are self-quarantining at home for 14 days, as recommended by health professionals.

The test has been sent to the Centers for Disease Control for confirmation. Until the test result is confirmed by the CDC, which can take up to a week, it is considered a presumptive positive. IRE is notifying conference attendees now so that individuals can make their own decisions on how best to proceed.

its relevant whether you want it to be or not. This is the man in charge of guiding us through this disaster. His action are important to all of this, esp. in USA (USA USA)
You may be right but we havent proven ourselves to be mature enough to not turn the thread (any thread) into a useless political itchfest.

Gtfo here. I haven't posted anything inaccurate. Ignore me if you want. Hey at least Djax agrees with you!

Far more people were sick. Far less events cancelled.

Why is the death rate all that matters? If so, 0 sporting events cancelled for Ebola, sars, or mers.
I think the issue is that this virus makes people a lot more sick and has higher mortality rate.  If 15% of the folks who get this virus needs to be in a hospital it won't take 60mm people to get this disease to create a health care crisis as we don't have capacity in our healthcare system to deal with that many patients.

Read reports out of Italy.  Folks are having serious medical issues and aren't even being treated since hospitals in northern Italy are totally swamped with Covid cases.

This isn't that hard...

Hospitalization Rate:

2009 H1N1: 0.4% (274k hospitalizations)
2020 COVID: ~15-20%

We only need about 1.5 Million cases of COVID to reach similar hospital traffic. We could conceivably have that within 2-3 months of the first case, or blow well past it.

I don't have the ICU numbers, but I presume they Equality as lopsided.

Swine flu was ACTUALLY #justaflubro compared to COVID.

How many people get sick with the common cold every year?

It's not just infection rate nor just death rate.  So far all of these prior viruses we are talking about had either a high infection rate OR a high death rate.

H1N1 spread easily but it wasn't any more dangerous than the flu.  Ebola was dangerous as hell but you couldn't catch it from a sneeze or a cough.

This one is really the first we've had recently that spreads very easily AND kills a reasonably high number of people AND hospitalizes a high number of people.

I suggest everyone ignore folks like Shader that ignore facts and try and push a narrative.
Pretty sure Shader stated that the MA primary was tonight as well.  Always in a rush to be the first to post "facts" without regard to veracity.  Have had to put a number of posters in this thread on ignore already because frankly, they don't know wtf they are talking about.  This thread has become a lot like twitter- the race to post the first falsehoods, and in fact most of the "news" in this thread comes from either twitter or redddit.

Would prefer more facts, less fiction, but that's just me.

Maybe this will be the post that changes his mind!   Dude...please stop.

Absolute outrage. Trump former Homeland Security Advisor is correct. We are 10-20 days way from a crisis here, and the government we elected is unprepared and lying by omission. This virus is everywhere by now. It will double and double and double until we overrun healthcare resources in many places. The instinct of the administration to lie and stonewall is going to ensure this gets incredibly bad — in the month of March.
Is fear mongering in the FFA thread with the same tired political schtick appropriate? Can you save this thread for those of us looking for info and we can soil the PSF one with the same political complaining?

When does the ignore function go into effect?  Just tried it for the first time, refreshed the thread, and he's still here.

I think I was responding to someone who said the primary was Massachusetts. I apologize, I’m not a political guy. That person also apologized for getting his abbreviations confused.

I don’t think this is a big deal but if my mistake upset you somehow, feel free to put me on ignore.

I've complained about the fear mongering for about a week now as well.  I actually like Mr. Ham and give him a bit of a pass, but I do wish he could tone it back a bit.  Usually he prefaces his paranoia with saying as much which is appreciated.  I'm not going to fault someone for being genuinely afraid (or curious), but passing along fear helps no one

So I had a meeting with a guy today whose wife and daughter returned from Milan the Saturday before the outbreak was reported. Apparently they shut down his daughter’s school because she had gone in on the following monday. They stayed home the 14 days and never developed symptoms so are in the clear and school reopened etc.  He said she is randomly sick today though .... hopefully just a regular cold and I wasn’t exposed to anything. Didn’t shake hands or touch anything he did ....

Archdiocese in San Francisco just shut down all of their schools in SF and Marin for the next two weeks, beginning Thursday (Friday was already a day off, Thursday they are using to train staff on teaching remotely).  I work from home already, and I just updated my Xfinity high speed internet as it looks like my daughter and I will both be spending a lot of time on Zoom calls for the foreseeable future.

Cpap doesn't increase pneumonia risk, not cleaning your cpap increases pneumonia risk.   There is a difference.
I’m not certain that distinction has been validated - have a link to any data? Here’s One for sleep apnea and pneumonia risk, which shows OSA increases risk above baseline, which is worsened with CPAP use.

While I agree it’s important to clean the CPAP, almost all pneumonia essentially results from aspiration of non sterile oropharyngeal secretions. It’s easy to imagine the added pressure increasing that risk, clean machine or not.

When do we start canceling games for the flu?
The truth hurts.  I talked with some real nurses today and none of them are concerned.   None.  They see this as just another wave of cold crap like all the other stuff that has rolled through the past 20 years or so.  But hey what do they know.  They have only been medical professionals the past 30 plus years.  Better off listening to the news or a sports website right?

Update: Was encouraged to phone in my symptoms.  Sounds like I might be on the test list tomorrow.  I fit criteria to get Flu 1,2 tests, if negative they will push for cov after an exam.

Feeling better though.  I would sell some puts on my death stock, anyways.

If a "Dallas man in his 40's with no recent travel history, and a clean browser history tests positive today" story comes out.  That's me.

The deaths are starting to really mount. The flu Bros better find a way to stop this in it's tracks within the next 2-3 weeks or they are going to be completely wrong. Not hard to look at these numbers and see that, yet somehow it's still an argument. Terrible.

Sorry man, let us know.  Regardless of what you have, hope you feel better soon.

My pop has been pretty dismissive, thankfully I got through to mom.

Sent dad a 1:1 text basically saying I know he's a hardass and nobody's going to tell him what to do. However, I recalled him sobbing, terrified next to me when mom was in surgery removing a portion of her lung with a cancer scare.

I told him that lung issue meant COVID could well take her life if she caught this..... and if HE caught it being cavalier, she would most likely get it from him.  Asked him to keep that In mind.

He's since taken this more seriously.
My mom was the first to blow the whistle about this to the rest of my family in a group Snapchat.  (although she also said it was a Chinese terrorist attack   )

Hasn't stopped my parents from going to the casino once a week.  Great place to be with a bunch of elderly lifetime smokers.

They are in relatively good health and if they have to be quarantined for a few weeks maybe they will clear out 1/4 of their freezer space.

Frankly, none of us should give a second thought to the “flu bros”. This is far too serious to waste your time on winning internet arguments with trolls. At least that’s my opinion, I’m totally done.

This thread keeps me informed and keeps others informed.  I like to think I’m better equipped to make decisions based on what I’ve learned here, and I’ve read others say similar.  The more we discuss the facts and ignore the trolls, the better the thread will be.

You're basing it off of a Chinese study   hard. Pass.

Thanks for the post and not disregarding my posts as shtick like some people. We have a long way to fo before we get to those swine flu numbers. I doubt we even get close.

Be careful. Nurse I talked to said the same thing. Shader said I made the story up. You must be too or it's shtick.

It gets pretty sad at times.

I’ve seen a good post a few have shared on FB from a health expert on 10 things to know on the virus that helps put it all in perspective. I wish I remembered the website maybe someone else has it. I’ll look when I have a second.

I agree with you that we need to keep politics out of this thread so that the thread doesn't become worthless.

But at some point in the future when history books are written about Covid-19, the miserable failures of our elected government officials to properly prepare for and manage this pandemic and the resulting effects of their inaction, will be one of the largest stories about it.
